Mumble Vs. Vent and thoughts

I use Mumble, Vent, and TS, though I mainly use Mumble, I feel it's just better. The sound, latency is superior. Though, it takes knowing how to set it up to make it better than TS and Vent.

After setting it up, the volume is perfect. In Vent I always have to put people like 800% louder, the same people are fine on Mumble.

Also I can set voice activation for Mumble without having to worry about any background noise going through. I use Vent and TS occasionally, and I usually have to set Push to Talk on.

Also on the Voice quality, you won't really notice the difference until your in a higher bandwidth server, I usually use a 560 Kbit/s Mumble server, Vent and TS don't even come close to the sound quality.

Though TS and Vent is more widely used, I only have it because of clans I'm in using them.

My friends and I switched from Vent to Mumble a few months ago... so far it seems pretty good. For a while Vent only supported a crappy codec for Mac, I don't know if that's changed... but Mumble sounds better on mac imo.

Just in case it's not obvious; Latency has nothing to do with the software used and everything to do with the hardware it is hosted on and the network connection quality (route, hops, etc) to that hardware.

Mumble is fine if it's just you and a handful of people, it totally falls apart when you put hundreds on people on it which you won't need to do unless you play EVE.

I don't know about having hundreds, we normally have about 30-40 online on raid nights and it runs perfect for us.

It seems there's a huge draw to Mumble for minecraft.

I like Mumble, but EVERYONE and their mom uses ventrillo. It'd be hard to try and convert people over, and frankly I don't think there is enough difference to even try.

People are comfortable with vent, but each person I've brought onboard to Mumble has liked it a lot.

It's not vent, it's that Apple doesn't support the GSM codec.

There's a pretty decent Mac codec on Vent. I think it's called Speex? I've never had issues with it.

I use TeamSpeak3. Tried Mumble, it seemed pretty good but a lot of people just couldn't set it up properly for whatever reason. They could setup vent and TS3 fine, but not mumble.

I recently got involved with mumble when my friends and I started playing FW (forsaken world). I seriously prefer mumble over vent for the player capacity and some additional small features. I will say there's been a lot of trouble with other people setting up the VoIP yet for the most part everyone can figure it out.

It's a simple choice for me.

I run the VoIP server for my clan and Mumble is free for unlimited users and Vent is only free for 8. So I run a 32 player Mumble server for free.

When you configure mumble to the maximum bandwidth it outpaces Vent for audio quality. Plus its lower latency and can do 3D positioning for players in many games. I have already been using Mumble for nearly 2 years now and There was no reason to switch to TS3 when that finally came out.

Also there are even mobile builds of Mumble for iOS devices like my iPhone and Android devices. I love the ability to connect via 3G from anywhere and talk to all my friends.

mumble is buggy, i've had it try and run in the back round several times after I've closed it, some times i dont notice and when I go back on and leave again it adds another back round process, yesterday i found out that over the course of a day I had managed to some how get three separate mumble processes running in the back round, keep in mind im not talking about running with the icon hidden in the tray there was no indication of this other than the fact that my heat sink was screaming. as far as options and quality of communications go I think mumble has vent beat, it just needs to be streamlined.

I've been using vent and TS for years like most people and see no need or reason to switch to mumble. I mean this voip can only get so good with the current tech we have and there's really no reason to compel me to change to a different one. I've had a TS server for almost 7 years that I pay for and running TS3 on it since the early beta builds and its fine. Vent I keep installed in case needed for pugs/other games/wow etc. TS3 is my main gaming voice hang out and it gets the job done and the codecs are clear and with very low latentecy I see no reason to mess with anything new. Mumble would have to really add/change alot of shit to get me to even bother trying it.

Is it mumble that has the screen overlay so you can see who is transmitting in game? That's the only real benefit I found using it in the past.

Have you ever switched from speex to GSM? It's night and day.

Yeah, I remember Speex was terrible... it sounded more muffled than talking through a butt. It was really annoying because sometimes I'd go onto another server that I didn't have admin on and it wouldn't be using Speex or GSM and basically no one could talk to me. So far I've had no problem with Mumble on mac.

Mumble is superior, it's the best

1. Delay is basically zilch
2. Sound quality is flawless if you set it right, make sure people set their quality
3. It's cheaper
