Which is better for folding and why? I am going to buy one of the two just not sure the price is so close. Does one use far more power then the other while making almost the same ppd?

Getting close to 9K PPD with my GTX 450s. Can be had for around $110 shipped if you keep your eye out for them. Around $90 if you are into MIRs.

I'm getting 10.6K PPD with my GTS 450 and the fastest current WUs, but my card is an Asus and they're the best OCers from what I've been reading. The thing clocks like a bat out of hell to almost 990MHz with only a minimal voltage increase. It can do more but I stopped there because of diminishing performance returns beyond that frequency with this GPU architecture. I could probably eek out a bit more performance if I increase the memory clock.

That said, I do think the GTX 460 is a better deal especially if you can find one close to the price of a 450.

460 also give you some protection againted larger WUs that the 450 might not fair as well with.

GTX460s can be had for around 90-115 AR in the hot deals section or if hate rebates around $110 in the FS section

you need to OC your card then, you should be getting >10kppd... definitely more than >9kppd even with a mild OC

I have mild OCs on them. They were cheaper Sparkle and PNY cards with prices I could not refuse. :D Shaders are between 1700-1800. These are also being used in HTPC rigs with smaller HTPC cases. They make fantastic HTPC cards btw (I've had better luck with these over my 4000 or 5000 series ATI cards in my HTPCs).

I had my sparkle cards making >9kppd for sure

Funny thing happened on my way to check my HFM today: GTX460 and GTS450 both folding an ugly 6800. 460 is getting 10K ppd, 450 is getting 5.5K ppd. this is on a 1090T folding smp on all 6 cores as well butit's definitely an apples to apples comparo ... ;)

I folded a couple of P6800 WUs. My GTS 450 was producing over 9000 PPD. Granted, it's the slowest WU of the three types I've seen for Fermi so far, but I have yet to encounter a WU that drops my card's production under 9K. Hope that won't happen.

What tools are out there for GPU voltage tweaking? Or is this done in BIOS?

I have a MSI 450 that I have to underclock from stock to avoid EUE's so I'm only getting 8000 ppd from it.

Re: 450 vs 460

My vote would be the 460 given the small price difference and a little moar horsepower for demanding WU's.

I just installed a GTS 450 in one of my systems today. GPU Tracker says at 850mhz core it is getting 5kppd on a 6800. I thought the client was starved of CPU time but maybe not. Afterburner is also reporting 72% GPU usage on the 450 but 99% usage on the 460 in that same system. The 460 has the display attached but watching flash videos or other GPU accelerated things pushes the 450 up to 99%. Has anyone else seen this?

I am very surprised. Yours is the first 450 I ever read about that can't fold at stock. Odd. Usually, these cards will fold OCed without voltage increases. I use MSI Afterburner for settings adjustments as Zero suggested. You can overvolt your card and provided it's running cool, you should see a boost in PPD once you increase the core frequency.

The GTX 460 wins hands down in the performance arena. No questions about that. I don't know what power consumption differences there are and heat output between the two. My 450 runs very cool compared to my non-Fermi cards. It's one of the reasons I like it.

I have a P6800 WU processing currently and I'm seeing ~9300 PPD. My core is running at almost 990MHz, though, which partly accounts for the performance difference. If you can get your card at 100% GPU usage, you will see a boost. I don't know what's up with that. I make certain that my GPU clients have higher priority than any other app to ensure they're not starved of CPU.
