Sennheiser HD555 $85 @ amazon (clearance sale possibly)

Senn makes some nice cans. Good price on these, I've got a pair of 590s myself that have served me well, and continue to do so.

Definitely a good price for the 555s although we've seen some recent sales on the 595s which are noticeably better for the extra $20-30.

Yeah it's been at $85 since early Jan or so. The lowest in a few months, gone down since the new models got released. Pondering waiting for a 595 drop, but since the drivers are the same, probably the best bang for buck HP below $100.

That's a pretty hot deal for a set of those drums

I saw this for $69.xx on Amazon for about one day a few months ago. Good price still, and you can mod it into a 595 from my understanding.

Not to derail the thread but Shure SRH440 at $60 after coupon from here....

Matches or surpasses the HD555, and to a lot of people sound better than the SRH840 unamped.

The 555s were my first foray into decent headphones and while I liked them at the time, I simply cannot recommend them over the Audio Technica A700s at that price point. I had two pairs of the Sennheisers crap out on me in less than a year while I've had the same set of A700s for almost 4 years now. They are more comfortable, they sound better, and they are only slightly more expensive even with these Sennheisers on sale for really cheap.

I popped the Sennheisers in a couple weeks ago when I thought the A700s were going south on me (turned out to be my sound card eating shit) and I was just disgusted with how they sounded by comparison. So while it is a fine deal, I would still recommend the A700s over them.

i'm not a fan of the HD555 but comparing it to the SRH440 is apples to oranges.

So the comparison to the A700's up there is not also apples and oranges? Besides one being open and one being closed, and probably 95% of all headphones out there have a different signature, how is it apples and oranges?

And please don't say because the Shure is labeled as a "studio monitor"

Sorry not related but I just did the 555 -> 595 mod after reading this thread, thanks guys! From my anecdotal experience it does sound better, less muddled.

that's one huge difference. they're also not at all similar in sound - it's like comparing something from AKG to a JVC HARX.

Sorry but even Sennheiser's own line of headphones have different sound signatures than the HD555 so I don't know what you're getting at. You're basically saying the only thing I should compare the HD555 to is the HD595, which uses the same drivers lol....

I was just giving a subjective opinion on another set in the same price range that people might want to look at as an alternative, not comparing them directly. Some people like bass impact and a non-veiled high-end.

Thanks, oddly enough I was cross shopping these two headphones, trying to decide between closed and opened. I called up the local Guitar Center and they price matched the above deal and I walked out with a $63 pair of Shure SRH440's last night.

I'd bought the HD555 earlier last week from this Amazon deal and I'm listening to the two and trying to decide if I prefer open or closed. They both sound great in their own ways so far.

Nice price! I noticed Dakmart has the refurbished version for $53.49 shipped through Amazon if you click on the New/Used offers on the page.

Has anyone bought them refurbed and how did they look/work? I'm tempted to pick up a set! :D

I bought a refurbished set off ebay in early 2008. Still using them today. Haven't had a single issue. I'm not an audiophile, but they are by far the most comfortable and best sounding headphones I've ever owned.

deals so good, almost got the shures but then realized I already have 3 headphones and nice 2.1 system :/

Tempted to buy another pair as backup. My old pair has cracked at the joints.

Damnit went back to change shipping address to the hotel I'll be staying at for a week but it's already "preparing for shipment and can't be canceled or changed"

got mine in last week. Coming from a hd280 after 5 years so these do sound better. However they do feel fragile.

i had a pair of these, but i found the clamping force to be too much. my head is very wide though, so if you have a wide head you may run into the same problems.

i can, however, speak for the build quality of the headphones. i tried my best to stretch out the headphones, and they wouldn't stretch at all (i even brought out the pot of boiling water).

My head isn't exactly small either so these might be a no go for me too. Do you know your hat size?
