Killzone 3 Is A Movie With A Game Attached
By Luke Plunkett on January 13, 2011 at 5:15 PM

Hope you like your cinematic sequences, Killzone fans, because the third game in the PlayStation shooter series will have over 70 minutes of cutscenes.

I hope the cutscenes are skippable...

I hope the cutscenes are skippable...

I know it's not Killzone, and it's not even my typical game, but I am finally playing the SP of BC2 tonight...

I'm about 2-3 hours in, and the amount of cutscenes in this game are ridiculous. At times I felt I was watching more cutscenes than playing game...

At least Sniper: Ghost Warrior kept theirs short and to the point...

I thought I liked that games have basically become interactive movies now, but BC2 certainly has me annoyed only a few hours in... Run to a red square on the map, cutscene, run to the next red square, cutscene... I think one cutscene was just a lead-in to another cutscene...

I'm just watching 'em in case there's something in 'em that's important to the game...

Why? Video games are a form of entertainment so you play a game to enjoy the story....yes?

I'll never get why this is a problem.

I hate long, pointless cutscenes that are unskippable, especially if I decided to play the game a second time over. Screw that, KOTOR already annoyed me enough on the first runthrough...

If I want a brilliant and involving story, I'll read a book; not play some shoot 'em up with a juvenile plot and one-dimensional characters with pathetic voice-acting. (I borrow from the "Zero Co-Ordination" skit by Pure Pwnage)

Storytelling should NEVER come at the expense of gameplay. Forcing players to watch the same cutscenes during every single playthrough is completely unacceptable. Unskippable cutscenes are part of why I don't think very highly of the Assassins Creed games.

I don't mind watching cutscenes and getting the story the first time, but not every fucking time I replay the campaign.

Cutscenes usually are skippable the second time through, games like uncharted, god of ware etc wouldnt be as good without cut scenes.

As long as it's not a garbage story like MGS4... then I'm ok with that. At least Killzone 3 looks like it has a story, unlike the second game.

I really dont mind cut scenes, sometimes they are the best way to set up the story for the next chapter. They also provide a great oportunity to run to the fridge for another beer.;)

They can however be over done, MGS4 anyone?

I really hate those 5 minute cutscenes where you die then are forced to watch it over again.

I don't mind it the first time, because I want to further the story. They just need to make it so you have to hit a specific key combo (like start, then select) to skip them so they aren't accidentally skipped.

riiight here!

Man I hate that! I love cutscenes but damnit but the checkpoint AFTER it so I don't have to watch it ever damn time because I died.

KZ2 literally felt like I only put 5 hours into actual gameplay and beat the game. Not to mention that crap ending and how that black dude became annoying quick after he gets whats his face killed.

KZ3, meh.

Not sure about Killzone 3, but a lot of games including the two you mentioned use cut scenes to mask loading. I don't know that 70 minutes of loading is necessary, but if you never see a load screen in KZ3 other than your initial boot up I would imagine it would be thanks to un-skippable cut scenes.

I think I put 5 hours in KZ2 just trying to beat the last level. Painful memories, but it was satisfying to suffer through my suckage and finally beat down that jackass at the end

If they don't offer a way to skip the cut scenes ... I'll be pretty fucking pissed. I hate games that won't let you bypass damn cut scenes. MGS4 had an ass ton of them but at least you could skip them.

More/longer cutscenes doesn't mean it makes the game any better. I hope developers to not see this as some sort of achievement.

Metroid Other M and Bioshock 2 are two examples from 2010 where the game suffered signifcantly due to poor story.

Would less cutscenes have made them better then? Quality + Context. If the story is shit, the cut scenes won't help. And even if the story if good, cutscenes used in the wrong way would make things worse.

Then play games that dont have a storyline. what is soo hard to understand?

Having a storyline isn't the problem. It's when it seems like you spend half the game watching cutscenes that it becomes a problem for many gamers.

Just gonna jump right in here...

Then play games that dont have a storyline. what is soo hard to understand?

Cut scenes are a lazy way to tell a story in an otherwise fully interactive medium.

If you want me to be involved in the story, and be truly interested, let me play it. Let me have a part in it and feel like my experience means something. Don't make me sit there and watch bullshit that's already hashed out. If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd watch a movie.

Its a problem because they put so much cut scenes in the game that you dont get much game play. look at Gears of war 1. To me it felt more like a movie then a video game cause of all the cut scenes. an Hour & almost 20 mins of cut scenes is ridiculas. I want to play the game not watch a movie.

Well pick a different game to play if you hate it so much  or play it online, you get all the gameplay and none of the story. Simples.

Thats not the point. I am a Huge fan of Single player games. If they are offering a 10-12 hour game with an hour of cut scenes I can see where that is fine. But if your offering a 5-6 hour game with an hour of cut scenes then that sucks.

Will have to see what Reviews show.

killzone 2 was fucking pants. the control system was TERRIBLE. it killed it for me

Well from what I've read the controls feel almost identical to CoDuty now so, the weightiness of the controls from what I understand can be completely turned off in the 3rd one so I'm glad. I did descent online but never got "good" at it just due to the fact of your guy moving like he was stuck in a giant jello mold.
