WikiLeaks disclosures have been all over the board in its exposure of various levels of government embarrassment, but this one has a little different twist. According to WikiLeaks, the US government and Spain are attempting an end run around a lawsuit worth an estimated $500M in sunken treasure.

“The WikiLeaks cables are opening a window into the inner workings of international diplomacy for the general public, and it isn’t always pretty.”

WikiLeaks is so dangerous, it should be shutdown right away!!!! Al-CIAda!!!!!!!!

no wonder this country is so much in debt, they wanted to trade $500M of treasure for a $20M painting? Hell the taxes alone would be worth more than the painting!!!

Someone in the Wired comments had it exactly right though

The guy who says his family owns the paintings paid more in political contributions than the Odyssey crew did.

Therefore he > them.

I had big big issue with wikileaks releasing the information pertaining to national security issues because it could endanger lives of innocent people.

This however, this doesn't do that. It just shows the hypocrisy of our government.

What exactly did they release that endangered lives? Please be specific. I saw many cables that were embarrassing, but that's the extent of it. Regardless, wiki leaks didn't do anything wrong, IMO. The actions of those that gave them the documents clearly did (whether you agree with the political reasons for releasing them or not).

In the end, the biggest problem is the ridiculous amount of bullshit that the government classifies.

+1^^

I've heard a lot about all these lives endangered by the WL cables, but the evidence is lacking. "Endangered lives" rings as a desperate, hollow cover phrase instead. WL's gravest sin seems to be exposing the corrupt incompetence of governments all over the world. Our foreign service people come across as pretty smart and capable, in comparison.

I suddenly get the image of Bill Hader as Julian Assange -sips tea + evil laugh-

Assange makes a much better caricature of himself than that SNL clown.

Does that not remind you of Dr. Evil?

So the people with Odyssey did all the work and took all the financial and physical risks finding the treasure, and Spain reaps the rewards? I have no problem with WikiLeaks exposing this kind of hypocrisy.

I'm probably no different than any other Joe Citizen that our snobby, ultra rich, ultra elite politicians hate. But seriously, when are these people gonna have the balls to stand up and just tell the truth on matters like these?

Really, seriously, just stop with the back door, back room, back pat bullshit. This country is going down the toilet spiral fast with the way its going. Continuing to lie to me is like telling the cancer patient that they aren't terminal, when their time is clearly marked. It might make them feel good on the surface, but when things are bleakest I'm going to look backwards to the liars first as the reason things are where they are.

It scares me to think that even if they are telling the truth, the concept of politicians themselves by their own previous wrong doings, are so far gone, that I dunno if i could even believe them then. It'd have to be concrete with evidence. Because this kind of stuff continues to push me in the other direction

+1 to wikileaks
-1 to assange in that photo... maybe it's his attempt to try and annoy the ones he's after (the corrupt ones) but it seems silly & unnecessary.

I'm looking forward to what OpenLeaks has to offer, seems their approach might solve this issue people have with wikileaks/assange... who knows?

oh yeah, of course... -1 to whoever in government decides to do stuff like that, they likely don't even care much about this leak, as they have enough power to avoid any harm it does to them, personally...

I have no problem with wikileaks as long as no one is killed by their releasing information. As long as they expose our foreign operatives, then I don't mind.

finders keepers, wtf?
Exactly.

Seems ridiculous, doesn't it. No way should Spain have claim after nearly 200 years. BS in my book.

I completely agree with you sentiments. Our federal government is too powerful and has gone way beyond our founders intentions and too many politicians do things in self interest.
