If you know someone that uses AVG and Windows 7 crashed after applying update 3292, make sure you tell your friend to read this. Thanks to Eric Satterfield for the heads up.

I got nailed by this yesterday. Ended up just restoring windows to my last working configuration from the day before.

So if you dont want to go through their rescue CD thing, give the windows restore a shot.

Also good to note is you can safely update again.

I just said it a couple days ago: UAC > Antivirus
UAC has far fewer flaws than any single antivirus program. If you are lazy or uninformed then UAC isn't for you, stick with antivirus software that destroys your system instead.

It seems you read every other week about how some antivirus software has ruined people's computer...

Basically, anti-virus software is the only software we allow full access to all system files at all times. Without anti-virus software, nothing is granted permission to the operating system without your permission...

This has happened with AVG more than once.

It's become bloatware. MS Security Essentials for most people.

On the AVG forums somebody wrote - "Thank you AVG for disabling my computer more thoroughly than any virus ever has."

Why does anyone still use avg on a windows computer? MSE seems better to me, and the fact its a microsoft av I'm hoping would have a lot less issues with windows than other av programs would.

In a corporate invironment is is 1/3 the cost of most software. I guess you get what you pay for.

No problem here. All machines updated through it just fine.

AVG is downright terrible. I had a hell of a time just removing it from a client's computer a few weeks ago. It's become the new (well, old) Norton. Even Norton is better than AVG these days, and that's really, really saying something!

imagine if you only had one computer, maybe you werent the most tech savvy, and this happened. now you dont know what else to do, no internet access to read that article, and you have to go pay $129 to geek squad to fix a bad antivirus update that costs geek squad 6 minutes @ $9.50/hour for their tech to apply the free fix from AVG.

add that to the laundry list of reasons why to never use AVG.

Hrm I'm typing from Win7 and AVG version..........(blue screens)
No problems here but I haven't updated to version 10 yet, that's what 2011 is any who aint it?

Damit this hit me hard. My wife's machine is refusing to restart. My machines wants me to restart to apply this latest patch. I keep declining. I hope they get a fix. :(

This is not a viable fix for the technological handicapped. (ie Joe sixpack )

Most cases most typical users dont even know how to get into their Bios to change a boot order much less know how to make a recovery CD/USB boot.Or are to afraid to even consider.

Time to start recommending other options.
It got me on 2 machines.
1 machine recovered from a repair tool on windows DVD.(Vista 64bit)
the other machine not so pretty. Completely destroyed SSD raid partition no windows found on repair option. Head Smack moment. Thank goodness for cloned system.

Yeah AVG is a PoS these days. Switched to security essintials myself awhile back, its free, easy to use and less intrusive.

o boo i posted a solution to it last night ~3am

at least AVG has their own fix up, mine just makes it so you can get back into windows to uninstall

Got me yesterday. I tried the update again after the restore and got it again. So after restoring, I've completely removed it and replaced with Security Essentials. I also warned everyone on my facebook, 95% of which would not have been able to repair that on their own.

I'm done with avg now, that's for sure.

i updated my avg and it didn't bugger up my computer, but i think i'll be removing it when i get home from work. i'll try ms security essentials.

Holy cow, I used AVG on my Win 7 box since last Fall and just, a couple weeks ago, decided to uninstall it in favor of MSE.

Haven't used AVG for years.... junk, slow, meh at least it was free.

Avira has always been easier to find, better, and much easier for my technophobic clients to remember (the "little red umbrella on the bottom bar")

I personally use Nod though.... no problemos for a few years

I have it on one machine (win7) removed it a while ago from the other 2 machines, just have not gotten around to this one. Got lucky i can still use it, but I too will unistalling it as well in favor of MSE as soon as I get home

My rig was bricked last night from the update, had to return to an older restore point to fix it. Stupid AVG.

In an ideal world, all antivirus company employees would have to register their home computers with head office and have the company's AV solution installed. Until they are all updated with a new release or patch, nothing goes to customers.

I had this yesterday... managed to recover, then immediately uninstalled AVG and put on MSE instead. I figured it was something to do with AVG, but didn't realize it was this widespread.

Lol I just read this and without thinking suddenly threw my cursor to my AVG icon in the taskbar to disable auto update. It was almost like slow motion, I went "Noooooooooooooo" and everything.

All's good though.

Same here, almost. It disabled resident shield. It only has the free version so maybe the components that bricked others isn't on this one. I have MSE on other PCs and it looks like it's time to convert them all.

So now that this issue is out in the wild, have AVG gotten their act togeather and fixed the problem?

I was thinking of going MSE with my gaming rig and lappy, but my paid licence lasts until mid 2012, so eh... might update then.

Update: Just updated my lappy (Windows 7 Home, 64bit) with AVG 2011 x64 bit to virus DB version 426/3293, and it appears to have rebooted OK. I guess the problem is gone now, but this won't bode well for AVG's PR department.

I can't believe some people absolutely love AVG and defend it. I have already linked this thread to some friends.

I'm an antivirus user and I prefer nod32. It never makes a noise, never pops up, most of all it never ruins my machine.
