HP ZR24w

The plot thickens. I just want to know how they can sell these for $299 if cost is $384. I smells something fishies. :D They have 24/7 support, give them a call now.

I called this morning and they said they resolved their issue over my paypal payment. The tracking info shows it left TN today :D

Hopefully the rebate works. Though, for ~$385 shipped to CA, the price would still be decent if it didn't.

Is the glow I and many others are experiencing with the HP ZR24w found on all IPS panels?

Fedex tracking says mine will be here Friday. Please no dead pixels, please no dead pixels. Please NOTHING wrong with it. :D

I ordered 3 from Macmall, I wonder how rebates #2 and #3 are going to go :\. They haven't shipped yet, hopefully I'll get them before the weekend so I have time to play with them :)

Probably not well if its one rebate per household. :D

I currently have a U2410. It's a perfect no-problem panel and I have been looking into getting a second on, but it's just too expensive. You guys think it's worth it for me to just sell my U2410 and get two ZR24ws? I really love my U2410 though.

Well, my monitors are coming Thursday, but from what I understand, the ZR24Ws are slightly better versions of the U2410 (less aggressive AG coating, better tinting, better QC). Also, right now the ZR24w is going for mighty cheap... I'm not sure if the U2410 was ever cheaper than $340.

I don't own the U2410, so I can't really compare the two. As for the ZR24w, it's a good monitor, but it's not a monitor that blows me away or anything. I've always wondered how the two compare if I were to place them side by side.

getting my ZR Thursday as well.

if IQ and sharpness are anywhere as good as my current 2209wa, I will be completely happy....and hopefully less aggressive AG.

@KollunZ - if you are happy with the U2410. You may want to stick with that and wait for Black Friday deals for the same monitor. Between the U2410 and the ZR, there really isn't an outright winner, and depending on individual usage needs .

When you get your ZR, can you compare the sharpness between it and the Dell and post results here? I'd be curious to see how the sharpness compares between the two.

Have two ZR24ws and just picked up a 2209wa. The 2209wa looks sharper (i'm not sure if its 'too sharp') and has much better sharpness controls. The white glow (bottom left) also seems less apparent when looking at it dead on, although that might be partially because its a smaller screen

Ekaggen - would you say the text is noticeably sharper than the ZR24w? I am currently using a Dell at work and the Dell monitor's text overall seems sharper than my ZR24w.

Cliff - looking forward to your comments.

Yes I too would like to know. Really like the 24" 16:10 real estate for spreadsheet work. Text clarity is of utmost importance and I can't decide whether or not to pull the trigger on the ZR24w.

I'm extremely picky about text and for me, the ZR24w doesn't suit my needs. I'm seriously considering getting the U2711, mainly for text and real estate space, as I've never seen a lower pixel pitch than this 27."

Hmmm, so the ZR24w was noticeably worse for text (relative to the 2209WA)?

The U2711 is probably out of my budget. Maybe I should consider two 2209WA side by side, but I don't have that much desk space either. Damn. Best text and then color is of utmost importance (no gaming, movie watching on this for me, just work).

Don't own the 2209WA, so I can't really compare the two, but I'm disappointed with the ZR24's text output. It's not bad or anything, but it's not what I would call razor sharp, which is what I'm looking for.

ZR24w came in today. :)

I can see what addictedto60fps noted about text.

Its sharp, but there's still that 'grainy' look. Having said that, I'm nowhere *that* particular about text clarity and its not any different than my 2209wa. I doubt anyone else less discerning would even notice.

Still haven't calibrated, but overall, IQ seems very good. This thing, as others have noted, is very BRIGHT by default.

I can imagine that this monitor would only get better after proper calibration and adjustments.

My comments are purely anectodatal, and I've come from a Samsung 226bw, a 2209wa, and this ZR24w...overall...seems to be as good as the 2209wa.

Also, I have both both monitors side by side (2209wa and ZR24w), using the same desktop image. The ZR24w is NOT as *grainy* as the Dell.

BTW. Got this from MacMall for $349 with a $50 rebate, so total came to $299. NO dead pixels. This is definitely a keeper.

Will update once calibrated with Spyder2.

Adjusted to:

Brightness: 10
Contrast: 90
• R: 240
• G: 215
• B: 230

I realized that brightness/contrast is really going to depend on the preference of individual users. The RGB settings from Flatpanels are very good IMO. Flatpanels is also right in saying there is a bluish tint for this monitor's color settings. Its easily resolved though.

Cliff - wow, $299 is an amazing price. That's an excellent deal! I paid $399 for mine.
Yeah, the average person isn't going to be nowhere near as nitpicking as I am when it comes to text, so definitely keep that in mind if you are reading my comments about text clarity. :p Once you have the monitor completely calibrated, can you post your settings, Cliff? I don't have any kind of calibration software, so I'm just using Flatpanelshd's settings that they used, only difference being that I raised the brightness up to 50.

Brightness: 50
Contrast: 80
RGB: Custom
• R: 247
• G: 220
• B: 239

Just thought I would put in my settings, these are done by eye only and NO calibration whatsoever so they are quite far from perfect but they are accurate to not bother me.

Brightness: 0
Contrast: 100
R: 94
G: 140
B: 99

Now a lot of people will probably go mental about using these settings without a calibrator but it works for me ;)

Only difference between those settings and the calibrated ones from TFT central is the brightness, they used 7.

I've been having a "difficult" time reading text on the ZR24w and it seemed more difficult to look at. Now this might be in my head, but I couldn't exactly place my finger on why it was more difficult. I am coming from a 22" Syncmaster T220 which seems much easier to look at. The text on the dell looks VERY different from the ZR24w. I'll see if i can get some decent looking photos.

Actually, I COMPLETELY agree with you. The text on the ZR24w is off, for some reason. I can't pinpoint what it is. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees this! Also, I agree that it's also difficult to look at. I can't look at the screen for long periods of time without it starting to bother me. I don't know exactly what the problem is. The Dell at work is perfectly fine. The text looks crisper and overall, I can stare at the Dell monitor for hours and it still wouldn't bother my eyes.

See this post I made in a separate thread regarding the text clarity on the ZR24w.

I don't know if you guys have tried this but Windows has a wizard that let's you 'calibrate' text. If you choose correctly you can more or less get rid of the text antialiasing that Windows adds and that should make text substantially clearer. I'm typing this on my ZR24W now and the text looks fine.

Is this where they show you a series of the same sets of text and ask you which one looks the best to you? If that's the one, then yeah, I've already done that. Text still seems off to me. Hmm, maybe I'm not choosing correctly then? You do bring up a good point about the antialiasing. Maybe that's what's causing the text to not look right to me. I'll mess around with it some more later tonight and see if I can get different results.

What tool is that in Win7?

Using Win7 Premium, and all I have is the Display Color Calibration and the Clear Type Text Tuner.

Just to note: The Dell fails the lagom sharpness test at its default sharpness of 50 and passes at 40. However it still looks decent at 50 sharpness. The HP passes at its default (4) and looks bad at the highest sharpness (5). One reason the HP might be not as sharp could be because it only has 5 sharpness steps instead of 10 like the dell.

Also, are your eyes used to a 22" monitor, because that was one of the factors I was thinking of. The 24" HP is bigger than what I'm used to so it causes eyestrain resulting in blurriness?

Hmm, maybe it's the screen size, but I don't see how that possibly could be the problem. Having said that, though, 24" is the largest monitor I've ever used. My previous monitor was 22."

Hey cliff. I also got the zr24w from macmall. Not sure where the UPC is though. Is it on the box itself? I just want to make sure I do the rebate right. Thanks.

Does the rebate need a UPC? I read it was just copy of invoice and/or packing slip. The UPC is not listed as a requirement on the rebTe form I had, it just said to keep a copy of it.

It's the ClearType text tuner.

Yup. You have to choose the ones that aren't really anti aliased. Everytime I get a new screen it looks terrible (to me) until I get the text tuned to not be anti aliased.

Windows 7 Ultimate also has a calibration program built in. You can run that, then it asks you if you want to run the text tuner. Personally, I didn't see much difference in text using the tuner.

Start, Control Panel, Display.
