Windows 7 Backup/Restore or Acronis True Image 2011?

I am wondering if I need to upgrade to the latest version of Acronis TI 2011? I rarely use it for backing up file since I have an external drive that I manually backup files to.

My concern is this: I am considering a RAID 0 setup with 2 x 80GB SSDs on the Intel ICH10R and I am wondering if I backup everything from the RAID array using Windows 7's Backup/restore tool, would I be able to restore it to the array in the event of a failure? Does Windows 7 Restore recognize RAID arrays?

I think Acronis recognizes RAID arrays but I may be wrong about that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Acronis does RAID.

I've been a devout Acronis fan for @ 7 yrs and it's saved my buns many-a-time but I've definately been disappointed with the lastest versions when using W7.

I noticed there's a brand new TI 2011. Hopefully all the bugs are worked out of this one. :)

Care to elaborate? I've seen this software praised by many, but I've also read/heard about numerous bugs/complaints/horror stories (especially with regards to the later versions).

What issues did you run into? Did it go downhill after XP? Vista?

Im also curious what issues you were having as Ive been using Acronis 2009 for a while now and havent had any problems and even done several drive migrations flawlessly with it.

Currently for backups I use a combination of Delta Copy and Acronis for my primary and alt rigs and just delta for some tertiary ones.

Windows 7 backup doesn't play nice with my main rig (keeps failing at random points and spits out some generic error while doing network backup), however I haven't had any problems with Acronis TI 2010. Heck, the boot disc even supports backup via FTP.

The problems started with W7.

I've had various problems but the latest unresolved problems have been that Acronis will "lose" my WHS after awhile. This is pretty annoying 'cause that's where I back-up and store my images.

And the only way to fix that problem is to reinstall Acronis but after uninstalling Acronis it won't reinstall. Supposedly there's some kinda registry fix but I haven't played with it.

I just did a fresh OS install on my new drives so it works great......for now.

Hopefully these problems will be addressed in the latest version.

I suppose a better question is, w/ the speed of SSD, why would you need to complicate stuff w/ RAID? I don't like RAID, as everytime you add something to the equation, something can fail.

The simpler the sys., the less chance something will fail. Does RAID really show a noticeable difference w/ the speed of SSD?

True, but RAID 1 and 5 (among others) provide some degree of redundancy. With a single drive, you only have one point of failure but if it does fail you're out of luck...unless you have backups, which should also be used with redundant RAID arrays.

In sequential transfers, most definitely. But many people won't benefit from that at all, especially if they are using the SSD(s) as an OS/boot drive.
