Incredible coming..

I was at the verizon store yday playin around with the incredible and when I tried to go to youtube to play some videos, it wouldn't work. Said it needed a new flash player.. so when I tried to dl the new flash player on the phone a message popped up saying "This program is not compatible with this phone" or something of the sort. Can someone confrim that youtube actually does work on this phone?

You have to use the youtube app.

no you don't i have been going to youtube and finding vids and playing them that way.

Ordered an Incredible today at lunch. None are in stock at any of the 11 (yes, eleven) Verizon stores around me. They aren't supposed to get them in until June 1st.

Does anyone have any recommendations for accessories like a case, screen protectors, etc?

Think I'm going to order mine tomorrow. Also interested in a case and the larger battery.

When I go to youtube, and select a video, it opens it in the youtube application. It does not play in the browser.

Are you saying yours does not exhibit this behavior and successfully plays within the stock browser? I wonder if there's something wrong with my phone.

I assumed the store example he posted earlier was an association issue; hence the video needs to be played from the youtube app.

Hmm, just did some playing around with this..

I used both Dolphin HD and the regular built in browser. When I went to YouTube in Dolphin HD, I was prompted with three choices: I could download the file, play with HTC flash player, or open the video in the YouTube app. The flash plugin attempted to load in Dolphin HD but never displayed video. Obviously the YouTube redirect worked flawlessly.

In the stock browser the files started playing within the browser using the HTC flash plug-in with no prompts.

My Dolphin HD has the exact same behavior.

So if you're in the stock browser, the video plays for you in-line without attempting to go full screen? If I actually go to a video page, mine just has a black box with a play button and no regular video controls.

Just spent the better part of an hour in the local VZW store playing with the incredible and it's a lot better than the droid eris when I played with that.

I'm considering switching to vzw soon if the new iphone isn't all that great. The incredible was really smooth and I could definitely live with it, currently on a 3GS. It loads webpages faster as well, did a few side by sides with my 3GS.

The verizon network is better where I live so that's a plus. Overall I like the thing, the keyboard didn't lag on me either.

I ordered one earlier ($158.99 w free 1-day shipping) and the June 1 date has been pushed to June 7.

The ZAGG Invisible Shield is relatively cheap and pretty much bulletproof.

The ZAGG is terrible in terms of feel. Go with Bodyguardz or Steinhall unless you want your screen to feel like rubber and look like an orange peel texture.

Complete bullshit.

Not at all, how about you go actually read every single review out there not to mention every single forum post regarding screen protectors at every single phone forum on the internet.

Or, they could just believe you and like Walter Mossberg.

I had the ZAGG on my TP2 and promptly replaced it with a bodyguard due to the massive suckage of increased screen friction. When I got my Incredible, ZAGG was first out of the gate so I took another chance on them despite my previous experience and it's the same exact shit. I ordered a Steinhall and can't wait to dump this InvisiShit.

I love my Incredible still... glad I got it when I did since it sounds like a lot of people are having trouble finding them  . I have had it since launch and the thing just plain works, still just as fast as when I got it too :D. I've really gotten used to the soft keyboard vs. having a hardware one as a slide-out, now that I've used it for awhile.

As far as screen protectors and cases, I don't use any... I just keep it in a pocket with only soft items like tissues or napkins, bits of paper, etc., then keep my keys/pens/other sharp objects in another pocket. Works fine, screen is pristine still. I did the same with my Touch Pro 2, before this.

Personally I think both ZAGG and Bodyguardz suck for touch screen phones (can't say anything about Steinhall). They both give a rubbery feel that really distracts from the whole experience. The Incredible has a pretty scratch resistant screen (there was a video - which I currently can't find - that had a guy run his keys and some other stuff over the screen and it didn't scratch). The ZAGG and Bodyguardz skins are perfectly fine for covering the casing however I suggest giving it a pass for the screen.

My Incredible won't be in 'till around June 1 - the suspense is killing me!

Can someone who has one tell me if there's Hulu widget? That would be so cool! I'm already looking into the kinds of apps/widgets I can install, and am having trouble finding a list.

Anyone have a link to android aps-store list that is accessible from online without being on the phone itself? Looks like each wireless-provider has a little snippet on their own sites, but nowhere near the full lists are available...

My friend got his Incredible last week. It is so much nicer than my Droid and barely weighs anything compared to the brick in my pocket. Definitely wish I had not jumped on the first Droid so fast seeing whats out there now...

I can't find an official android market list with search that isn't one of those alternative markets not linked to Google offhand without using my handset... google has a small listing of top featured apps online but not a full one from what I can find on the web. Try checking on phandroid.com, you might turn something up there.

That's the impression I got when looking at the Moto Droid vs. the Droid Incredible I was picking up in the VZW store side-by-side... the Moto Droid felt like a brick, much rougher a build and somewhat slower (stock, overclocking I know fixes it right up but that requires rooting), while the Incredible was just as you'd hope a phone would ideally be, sans a hardware keyboard that is (well, preference I guess). They're both fine phones, but the Incredible is definitely more refined.

Agreed. PhantomSkinz and GhostArmor do not have the orange peel look however.

I use PhantomSkinz on my Incredible, and have used Zagg in the past. In terms of feel, PhantomSkinz feels like a thinner Zagg skin. It has the same initial sticky-ness that lessens significant over a few days. However, it is much clearer than a Zagg. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it if you can get over the initial tacky feeling. I can still Swype no problem.

http://www.appbrain.com/

is pretty close.

Cool - there are definitely a ton of apps on there - still can't find a hulu widget though... been looking around and it looks like hulu still has one in the works and it's not released yet. Can't find any news on it past the end of April. Hopefully it will be released sometime soon.

Pretty sure that Hulu isn't going to be releasing one anytime soon with the way they block mobile devices. Although it is good that Google and Adobe are working to get "full" Flash on Android. I hope they have an app for it in the works, but we shall see in due time.

Guys, just be aware that I've had problems with appbrain where it runs continuously in the background and takes some juice from the battery on my Droid. I finally uninstalled, and all is well. YMMV however.

It runs in the background all the time?? That's pretty lame - thx for the heads up.

Whats so special about this app? The reviews just says its a static background image that does nothing. Enlighten me.

Futurama reference - you'll either get it or not. :p I did assume it would be slightly animated, though... will have to wait and see.

Just thought I'd throw out that while the invisibleSHIELD does increase friction it's not a lot worse for me personally. I only notice the difference when using my g/f's Incredible (no screen protector yet), but when I'm just using mine it's just as slick. The orange peel visual texture is also in effect but again it doesn't bother me and I don't notice it when the screen is on.

Best Buy will install the shield for ~$10, and if you're not sure if you want one you can go there and ask if they have one on a phone you can look at, someone usually does. I've tried putting a few on in the past but this time I just had BB do it.

After watching the guys at BB put shields on my phone (twice, I didn't like the first time they did it) and my girlfriend's, I think next time I'll give it a shot myself. The one thing the guy at BB told me is that the little card that Zagg includes with the shield is pretty useless. They have their own wedge tool they use.

Some applications can do this if they do not quit properly or you do not quit them properly. It seems to happen more often for me if I home out of them rather than back^n out of them. I never have a problem with AppBrain if I back out as opposed to using home to quit.

The way to check if an application is doing this is to use a proper task manager to see if the application is cached or 'empty'. Astro and EStrong's Task Manager will both do this. If it is empty or cached, then it means that it is simply sitting in RAM so it will launch faster the next time you run it or can resume where it left off without using any additional CPU time. If you're using a task killer that just kills whatever blindly (including cached applications), then you're just wasting battery life and CPU time for no reason.

The concept of application caching is just general OS knowledge though and I'm sure a lot of you here at the [H] are already familiar.

^^ Good info - thanks. Does android not have a built-in task manager? Sounds like that is something that is sorely needed since there are a lot of apps that don't close properly and stay in background. Keeping some in background would be good for multi-tasking, but if there's no task manager to tell what's open and properly close stuff, it'll get bloated really fast.

Thanks for the task-manager links - if there's not a good default one, I'm sure I will be using one of those soon. Do those task-manager apps let you change the state of a given app, like switch it from active running to cached mode? How about caching other apps you might want to keep on the ready?

It has a built in services manager, but not full task manager. You can find it under Menu > Settings > Applications > Running Services.

You can only open a task or kill it. You can't manually define the cached apps. The algorithm for caching appears to be a combination of a static list, as there are applications I never use which are cached such as FM Radio and Footprints, and a list of recently ran applications.

Another good one is SystemPanel. I honestly don't use Astro for anything since I found EStrong's file manager and task manager.

I don't use any Automatic Task Killers or what you'll see mentioned on forums, but Task Managers are useful for troubleshooting issues such as applications keeping your phone awake.

Ya, task killers aren't necessary at all for the Incredible unless you need to force quit an app that is constantly crashing. Android does a very good job of managing apps and runstates, especially with the amount of RAM the Incredible has. This should get even better with the 2.2 update.

other then Bestbuy and Verizon, any stores carrying this phone? Waiting until 6/14 for Verizon to get more in stock is a killer...

Finally got my order in today then it dawned on me that the 14th - 16th is a lonnnnggggg time away. Well, at least I have my order in and now all that's left to do is wait.

The best method is to apply the shield in one fluid motion. Should take about 1.5 seconds if you are using the proper technique. The best time to do it is just seconds after removing any previous protective film to prevent random particles from coming to rest on the glass surface.
