Global music sales are down 7%, digital sales are up 9.2%, over two dozen markets showed positive growth (including Australia, Mexico, South Korea, Sweden and the UK) and Canada is a vast and lawless wasteland that hosts a “disproportionate number” of illegal music sites. Everybody sing it now…”Blame Canada!”

Global music sales in 2009 fell by 7%. This is disappointing, but amid the decline there are some very positive points. No fewer than thirteen countries saw music sales grow in 2009, including important markets such as Australia, Brazil, South Korea, Sweden and the UK. Digital sales in some of those markets rose at very encouraging rates, reflecting the new opportunities of online and mobile channels. South Korea and Sweden in particular saw striking returns to growth, showing how an improved legal environment can help impact on legitimate music sales.

Blame Canada , thats why we pay a royalty fee on anything that has to do with blank media. And because our music Kicks ASS.

Yes our levy that we pay on media allows us to download as much as we want. It is just illegal for us to upload. If you look at the numbers, since the inception of the levy on media, of 29 cents per disc, instituted in 1997, has distributed over 234 million dollars to the artists. http://cpcc.ca/english/finHighlights.htm And that folks is just from the little country of Canada, we of 25 million or so people. Imagine how much the USA with it's almost 300 million people could have collected and distributed, if their politicians weren't in the pockets of the RIAA.

Want to know more about levies around the world? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_copying_levy Just cause you don't like what happens in our country, does not mean you can try to implement your laws against our citizens. We have our own laws, and sorry, but downloading in Canada is 100% LEGAL!

Susan Boyle top selling album of the year???

It just means Canadians have good taste and refuse to buy crap.

If I didn't get American stations here in Canada I wouldn't know who Susan Boyle is. Thanks America for Susan Boyle.:D Its good to see America importing music from the Brits.;)

You mean "refuse to download crap." In Canada we get to try before we buy. Love the fact we can still choose between trying and buying, less chance of getting crap.

Love how they publish incomplete data to get across the 'message' that they want, while excluding the full details behind a pay wall. The full report is almost 500 GBP.

Also I love how they keep ragging on Canada as a haven for piracy. Even with the limited data they released, this is obviously bullshit. A 7.4% drop in sales in Canada vs. a 7% global average hardly makes us an outlier... They've just got their panties in a wad because our government has so far succumed to public outcry (ie. done their jobs) about the ridiculous sanctions they want to impose. Same thing for our inclusion on the US gov't copyright report, it's just laughable. This kind of thing really ruins any credibility they might have had IMO.

This no edit thing is so dumb...

In fact I would not be at all surprised if Canada's decline is actually less than many countries that do have the protections they're going for like the USA where economic factors have been relatively strong compared to Canada. Anyone know where the full report might be obtained?

Dude, who uses CD/DVD media in this day and age when 16/32gb ipods and the like are so cheap and a 2TB HD can be had for $100.
