Sony’s next PS3 update will remove the “install other OS” option. The company says they are removing this feature because of security concerns. :(

SCEA's Senior Director Corporate Communications & Social Media, Patrick Seybold, says the move is "due to security concerns". He also says that disabling the feature "will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system."

Seems like a joke to say they're removing the feature as a security concern.

Supposedly a vulnerability has been found in the Other OS feature set... I haven't read new on it in about a month and things have seemed silent on it.

It was only a matter of time once that information had gone public.

It sucks, but I don't think this is that big of a deal. Maybe more of a moral loss than anything else as this might bode poorly for the future of consoles being more than consoles in a GOOD way.

It was cool playing emulators on my PS3 through Linux but it wasn't anything I couldn't do with my PC.

Don't buy it for a second, but I don't own a PS3 do it really doesn't matter.

Meh, the more 'console' it becomes and less of some sort of Swiss Army knife, the better. Don't get me wrong, I like the web browsing, media support, media server support, PSP connectivity and remote play, and backwards compatibility of my unit. Gimmicky things like Linux support and some Fisher-Price Photoshop application is not gong to help Sony win support against the XBox 360. Nor is sticking a link to the PS3 store under several sections of the XMB, but that's another story.

slim doesn't support it anyway
suck but yer those that use it as a nice render unit will just move on

sure the security concerns are not the recently hacked announcements? not sure if the hackers used linux to play backups

Yup, Linux was used with a Windows emulator I think. This appears to have been done to disable the possibility of a home brew community for PS3.

if they are removing the feature can i get my 600 dollars back? I bought a 80gb ps3 first gen and now their getting rid of features.

I bought the console because of the advertised feature, I don't think that they could just remove any feature like that.

if they are pulling an "April fool" then they themselves are fools cause it aint April the 1st yet.

Well I just think is to make it more believable. Since making that statement on the 31th would shout April Fools'. Although there's even a blog about the release of the 3.21 Firmware. Well, we may know for sure on the 1st.

Some think this is no big deal, but to those who are keen (read: anal/fanboish) to point out the "many" reasons to own a PS3 over a Wii or Xbox 360, this was one of the top points they made. If this goes away, then a major pimping point will go buh-bye. It had little to do with how many would install Linux, just the fact that Sony allowed it w/o warranty voiding and the end-user *could* install it.

Sony's unique business model; most products improve over their lifetime. Sony is removing features as the PS3 evolves. PS2 emulation, USB ports, Linux

By next year they hope to have removed sound and the year after that it won't do anything at all!

I can understand the PS2 emulation to save costs, since it used specific hardware that they no longer need to produce... What I could never wrap my head around was the USB ports... Seriously, how much can you actually save by getting rid of 2 out of 4 USB ports?

Oh well no need to pick apart the system, it's not bad and I get use out of mine, but Sony on the other hand... I could pick them apart all day.. >.>

yeah its an april fools joke, the headline will actually would be "linux abandoning PS3 due to Sony Security issues" :D

I think they're trying to create demand for more bluetooth products, thus shifting the market in their desired direction. I think P_Jazzy has the right idea; these moves are purely strategic.

Personally, I'm irritated about being forced by any company in any direction that removes my options and empowerment. What we need is an open source, Android-based gaming console.

Exactly, it would be one thing if the console was purported to come with this feature and just never got it developed and never had the feature on release. That's disappointing and may cause some loss in sales.

It is another thing ENTIRELY to remove support for a much-touted feature down the road, especially for some BS reason like "security concerns." I'd like to see a bit more information about how exactly this creates "vulnerabilities" according to Sony. Seems like they are taking away support to force you to use their platform and their platform alone, and using a cop-out reason to do so.

This sort of pisses me off, so does the disabling of service/features if you decide to not update. Bastards.

Security or not, I no longer have what I paid for. I don't care about Sony's security, and they shouldn't pretend that this is being done for my protection. This really is the Sony of old.

It's as though the PS3 was designed by open-minded, free-thinking people that included features that slipped under management's radar, and now they're cracking down. Either that, or Apple has bought Sony.

playstation 3? people still have those? they must be like 5+ years old now... geez

So tell me, Smart Sir, which console should people own if they want to be "up to date" ? The 360? Oh wait, its 1 year older than the PS3.
And it came out in November of 2006, so it is not quite 4 years old...
What an ignorant comment.

Geohot will work on a custom 3.21 firmware for those already running linux

Also, what are the legal/tax implications on this in Europe. IIRC, a big reason sony made the 'other OS' option was because computers have way less import taxes than video game systems in Europe and the PS3 could be considered a computer. Do they now have to pay all the back taxes? I wonder if anyone has even looked into this yet.

Here's a court ruling about the PS2:

Mine still has Linux support as I still have Linux on it at this time, wonder when this is supposed to happen

On April 1, Sony will release the next firmware update for the PS3, bringing it to v3.21. It seems the sole purpose of this update is to remove the "install other OS" feature from pre-Slim models of the console. Pretty much theres no real reason to own a ps3 now since bluray players are now under 100 bux.

Ya know besides the reason the vast majority buys them.. Games maybe?

Lets be realistic here, the amount of people that bought a PS3 to run linux is very tiny. Has anyone in this thread complaining about it even ran linux on the PS3? Its run through a halfass VM and is about as fast as a fucking pentium 2. The best you can really do with the thing is play really old games on the emulators and even that runs like shit.

The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout its lifecycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip

sooo true
