I've decided to settle for a 22" I found a 24" a little big for me, no real advantage for my everyday work, browsing, surfing etc I found myself moving my eyes a little too much looking for the X in the corner when closing windows etc... 22" would probably fit me just fine.

However, whats an ideal resolution for it? Some say a 1920x1080 is too much for a 22" high pixel density thats hard on the eyes, is there any truth to that? would 1680 x 1050 be prefered?

Im considering either buying a 22" with 1680 x 1050 or two cheaper 22" with 1920x1080 and run as dual screens next to eachother...

either is generally fine
1920x1080 on a 22" is roughly the same pixel density/pitch as a 30" WQXGA or a 20" UXGA

1680x1050 is considerably "larger" pixels, again, not really a problem, roughly similar pixel density/pitch to 17" SXGA or 24" WUXGA

over that and txt will be way to small and strain your eyes

see above.
really I'm not sure why with the release of ~.245-.255mm dot pitch monitors (should say, re-release, CRTs were generally in this range and many early LCDs were as well) all this mythos has started about how "it will destroy your eyes" - most any cell phone or laptop on the market has a finer dot pitch than most any computer monitor you can purchase (with maybe the IBM T221 being an exception, and not by very much) and most of those are between .150mm and .210mm

The highest resolution that you can stand. Go to a store and compare the two side by side.

I would go with 1920x1080 over 1680x1050 at the same size any day. I've used a 1920x1200 15.4" screen and it was fantastic.

Even if 1920x1080 at 22in makes text a bit too small, I would still go with it and simply up the DPI in Windows - you'll get sharper text as a result. Basically always go with the highest resolution for a given size, barring financial reasons.

1920x1080. I have a 21.5" 1920x1080 monitor and it's wonderful. Maybe for performance purposes it may have been better for my 4870 to go with 1680x1050, but I love playing blu-rays on my monitor. It looks so good!

I my experience 1920x1080 resolution is just too much of a strain on the eyes. Just an opinion.

There are DPI settings to offset 'small text' issues, especially effective in Windows 7 and modern browsers like current versions of Firefox. I have an Envy 15 laptop with a 1080p display, and it looks razor sharp. With the right OS and browser settings, I find it really comfortable to read, even compared to my 24" desktop display. But to each their own.
