I like stuff like this, I really do. I just don’t know why they can’t shoot massive gigapixel images of hot chicks instead!

It took 172 minutes on a rooftop to shoot 1655 overlapping 21.6 megapixel images and 94 hours to stitch them together. The result is not only a gorgeous 26 gigapixel view of Dresden, Germany, but also the world's biggest photo.

That link will take you to a website that shows you the picture but not the full size zoomable one. But yeah the full size zoomable one isnt going to be 56k friendly as it slowly downloads the picture info of the area you zoom into.

I wonder whats the spec of the system he used to put together that huge image. wouldn't that requires insane amount of RAM to load up those pics and put them together:eek:

The image, and the amount of work it took to crunch through the raw data is very impressive.

"The converting of 102 GB raw data by a computer with a main memory cache of 48 GB and 16 processors took 94 hours. With a resolution of 297.500 x 87.500 pixel (26 gigapixel) the picture is the largest in the world. (stand December 2009) "

First thing I thought - no way in hell I'm gonna click on that image.

Lets play Treasurehunt.

Post a small, distinct clipping and we go looking for it. No blades of grass or crap like that.

To prove that you found it, just post up a larger picture showing the surrounding area.

Like this:

Found it!

Ok, here are a couple to get us started:

There's about 7 clock towers in that pic, none of them have the same time. They're all between 1:59 to about 2:10pm.

they don't do it to the human models because they're not that large of an object. even if they use mp65 to capture at 5x, then stitch them together, still not that large. How are you going to take 1000+ 21meg pictures of a human model?

At least, I wouldn't even attempt it for that reason=)

Can someone explain to me how they handle differences in focus stops at such varying distances. For example, the building with orange roofing and glass top, just off center, is in perfect focus all the way to full zoom. Only the building passed it is just a little fuzzy. Amazing.

Is it the fact that high-resolution images tend to show every flaw in their skin?

I totally agree. Imagine all creases and the oil and the tiny hairs upclose. I already hate looking into one of those those magnifing mirrors. You would need alot of photoshop at very high resolution.

I hate to be the downer here, but as has been mentioned in other threads on other sites regarding this story, I wouldn't consider this the world's largest photo. It's a massive photo collage. One picture is a photo. A server cluster processing 1655 individual photos for 94 hours makes a high resolution mash-up.

And before someone mentions that this would then be the world's largest photo collage, I think Google Earth would have something to say about that.

This reminds me of the cartoons like ren and stimpy where they would always do that close-up grotesque shot. Hairs out the nose, stink waves n all.

damn, you got a point.

i would have to imagine they will always have the final say... im not sure if its possible to get a bigger photocollage then the one that is actually a collage of the whole world itself.

i'm sure microsoft will try.

They should do this on someone's hands...except going into a super nano microscopic level. :D

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought when I read about this. It's still cool, but I don't think it can be considered the world's largest photo, either. It's over 1,600 photos stitched together.

Well there is one of the milky way, but I doubt it has more pixels than google earth.

Whatever happened to that guy that was shooting gigapixel images in one shot? He had some ex-soviet spy satellite camera setup on a tripod and was shooting with it?

Where's the smok'in hot chick that you guys found the last time Hard posted one of these pics?????

Anyone know if its possible to download the entire image somehow? I'm assuming it would be a rather huge TIFF or something.

Took me a while to find a person in this photo. See if you can find the woman smoking a cigarette who looks like she just rolled out of bed. There's a guy making a turn in a car, too!

Zooming in close on some of the cars in the parking lot, you can see reflections of buildings on the other side of the photo. Great stuff.
