So a while ago I upgraded my HP laptop from a core duo to a core2duo. The thing was a bitch to get apart, and the heatsink was plugged shut. When I pulled the heatsink off there was an indent on it where the core of the CPU (and GPU since its one giant heatsink) that had a little square sticky cloth like pad on it.

In my frenzy I pulled them off, and chucked them in the trash thinking I would just use some arctic silver upon assembly. Well when I was putting it all back together I noticed that the indent for the core didn't even touch the cpu/gpu when I set the heatsink back down without the pads. I didn't want to glob on 1mm of arctic silver so I pulled the pads out of the trash and smushed them back in.

I now have some heat issues, its not hot enough to cause my machine to die, or even get hot to the touch, but I have troubles playing games for an extended period of time.

Idle my cpu is about 55c, full load I have gotten it up to 70
Idle the gpu is about 55c full load I have pushed it over 70 a tad.

What should I do?

What CPU are you using?
What GPU are you using?
What app are you using to monitor the temps?
What laptop do you have?

Depending on what you have, those temps might just be right. The old Pentium Ms could handle up to 100C.

The temps for the GPU seems about right.

Try using Speedfan or Coretemp to see if they concur with CPUID hardware monitor

I have a T7600 and my CPU peaks at 75/76C when I am gaming on it.

Sometimes watching videos, with poor air circulation my CPU gets to 80C and I get a nice little warning from NHC that it's getting pretty dang hot.

At idle though I am generally in the high 30s and low 40s, depends on where I am and the ambient temperature of the room I'm in. (sitting it on a hard surface like a table it gets cooler, sitting it on my lap in bed or on the couch, it runs a bit warmer)

I guess the problem I am mainly having, is when I get the GPU up to temp, the video starts to get all messed up. It will start chopping and "lagging" so to speak.

When I first start a game its fine, but once I have had it up to temp for 20-30 min it will start to do it.

May want to look for another heatsink for cpu/gpu that doesn't rely on a thermal pad.
