O 5800, 5800, Wherefor Art Thou 5800?

Thank you for the excellent article.

When Global Foundries has their FAB2 fully operational then TSMC will have a run for their money. Maybe we will see less and less of shortage situation like this. At least that is what I expect to happen.

As of right now the egg has POWERCOLOR LCS AX5870 1GBD5-WMDH Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video ... - Retail for $499....lol

Interestingly enough, there seems to be an abundant of cards available here in Australia. By that I mean at least 1 in each shop. Seems to me like people here arent very enthusiastic about the price tag or technology. Then again, ripping people off for technology here is the norm

Holy crap!!!! I see now those have waterblocks on them so the price isn't too bad.

Sorry guys, but "wherefore" doesn't mean "where" and it never has.

Sorry for my attempt at making some folks smile, it won't happen again...if you give me your IP. ;)

Now if you can figure out what RTFT means in modern lexicon? As this has already been addressed directly.

Hope they will not be too hot with a $100 water block on them!

Heh, the NewEgg listing shows "Cooler: With Fan". I don't think that is the case... :p

I'm still waiting on my backordered XFX 5850 from amazon, just like everyone else:(

Most of these 5800 video cards are moving into e-tail and retail sales while the great minority are going into OEM sales.

Good to hear that the enthusiast builder has priority on this short supply instead of companys like Dell.

Thanks for all the [H]ard work, Kyle.

Personally, I don't care about the bidding wars. I just want one ASAP, but I only want the Vapor X 5870 when I can find it. You're a hell of a salesman, Mr. Bennett, Sir! :D

Wherefore = why

Seriously, this is a schoolboy error. I'm not being picky, but how can you NOT realise this? I mean, it's pretty obvious given the context anyway if you re-read Shakespeare's works.

Maybe this will help you out in the future before you misquote some more:

yeah we already know that.. some one beat you to the explanation of what wherefore actually ment.. your a little late..

Yes you are lol.

Maybe he meant it as in "Wherefor art thou 5800 [in such short supply]"
Now who's English comprehension skills are fail? :p

Interesting info, wonder where they all went. Trying to pick up another Xfx but no luck in 2 weeks.

The really sucky part is of course that nVidia is also having its 40 nm parts produced at TSMC, thereby increasing the strain on this bottleneck. Why in the world TSMC chose to be different and use 40 instead of 45 nm I don't know, I doubt its shareholders will like the effect on their bottom line very much, though.

At least nVidia will have a smooth-running 40 nm production process up and running by the time they're ready for mass-production of Fermi :p

Got two of these earlier in the day from NCIXUS for $476 each. I figure $80 per card for water-cooling is not a bad deal at all considering Koolance, Swiftech, EK blocks are all $100+. They shipped yesterday. Now I've just got to figure out how to loop them in my system (or get a whole new rad/pump)

To Kyle's point, Newegg is probably not your best bet for finding these gems at this point. Everyone and their sister likely has an auto-notify set for each card so they're scooped up within minutes (or seconds) when small numbers of stock are listed.

Try the "low pro" shops, but just make sure they're well-rated and don't pull pre-charge or pricing shennanagans.

It's a pretty nice block (EK). Currently running a pair of Asus 5870 with EK waterblocks (bought off newegg while they were briefly in stock) at 1025/1300 @ 1.35v which is topping off around 41-43 C after 10 min of Furmark. Using the stock cooler I was only able to get around 910-920 on the core @ default voltages before temps started getting too high for my comfort.

41c after 10 mins of Furmark??????

What is your ambient -10c?????????????????

I got a GD $3000 gaming build on indefinite hold right now for one reason: can't find 5870's in stock long enough to snatch one/two of them. Customer doesn't want watercooled cards and won't pay much over MSRP. Come on AMD, hurry it up dammit!

I'm losing money because AMD can't ship enough 57xx and 58xx series cards. AMD just has to do better, this is turning into a real fiasco.

Question:
Why isnt this a problem for 5700 GPUs?
They're easier to yeild because they're small and less spec'ed???

I think that's part of it, but it also could be that not as many are buying them too..

Question:
Why isnt this a problem for 5700 GPUs?

Two main reasons probably.

One is, as you thought, better yields. The reason for that is their size. So when you make chips, they aren't produced by the chip, they are produced by the wafer. Wafers are circular pieces of silicon that chips are etched on to. How many chips out get out of a wafer depends on the size of the wafer (though they are more or less all 12" these days) and on the size of the chip. The smaller the chip, the more you get per wafer. So if a given foundry can make 100 wafers per day for you, how many chips you get depends on their size. If you get 10 chips per wafer, that's 1,000 per day. If you get 100 chips per wafer, that's 10,000 per day. As such smaller chips can be produced at a faster rate, all things being equal.

Also, defects are the kind of thing that occur at a certain rate per wafer. So on average you'll have X number of problems per wafer with a given process. Ok, well this also means that when you have more chips, less are likely to be bad. Say you get 10 defects per wafer average. If you are only producing 10 chips per wafer you see yields in the area of 5 chips per wafer, usually the defects are grouped such as half the chips work, half don't, a 50% yield. Ok well now assume you get 100 chips per wafer. The defects are spread out such that normally they all hit a different chip, so 10 fail, but that's 90 per wafer that work, a 90% yield.

Thus smaller chips scale up in production numbers quite well, not to mention cost less to make.

The second reason is likely lower demand at this point. I'm not even really sure why they launched them yet. GPUs in that range are the sort of thing that people are more likely to get as part of a new system or something, where they want a reasonable GPU, but don't want to spend a lot. Not so many people who are hungry for upgrades will buy them. As such they probably have sales that are equal or lower to the 5800s, despite their lower price.

<Off-topic pedantry>

"Wherefor art thou" doesn't mean "Where are you". C'mawn guys, it makes you look like dumb cowboys when you get your lit references wrong. ;)

Hey take it easy on the guy. He already declared "Off Topic Pedantry" on his post. so he warned us...

That being said... Shakespearean Overclockers? Wow...

Talk about diversity in the PC hardware enthusiast community. More power to ya man! hahahaha.... :D

Hopefully by the end of Jan the supply problem will be sorted out so I can pick up a second 5850 for a good price (assuming they've added Crossfire support to Eyefinity by than) to go with the three new monitors I plan to get.

I have noticed these cards seem to have increased in price a bit. All by design. AMD wants these cards to be pricey. They want demand to be high.

I'm not buying one until March at the earliest, and not for the $399 everyone is charging now.

Yours. You mean "whose". "Who's" means "who is" or "who has".

But no. Kyle just made the assumption that wherefore means where because it has where in it...and didn't even write it correctly either.

The fact is, you can be a tech enthusiast and still get your details correct. You'd not be so lenient on HardOCP for getting tech facts wrong as that's your interest. Since I happen to have an English Literature degree, I consider it important to try to reduce the number of MAJOR errors in interpretation, especially when it's for a major tech site which is going to spread that error to thousands of readers.

It's like editors who try to tell you to say something can "comprise of" (shudders) just because people are too misinformed or dimwitted to realise that something can only "comprise" something, never "comprise of".

This isn't an Anglo-American feud either: it's wrong in both.

But I wasn't trying to poke fun of Kyle so much as highlight the mistake. We all make mistakes. Heck, I make them ALL the time. But if we aren't big enough to swallow our pride and accept criticism, we're no better than schoolboys who blame the dog for eating their homework. I wrote my comment in the hopes that it would be taken on board in earnest and edited, but it was just joked off as unimportant.

In any case, if some of you forum posters and Kyle now realise that "wherefore" means "why", I've done some good.

If it doesn't show, I work in education, hence my desire to educate anyone and everyone wherever I can.

Peace be with you.

Were you trying to complain about comprised of (or comprises of)? Comprise of, I can not recall hearing. Comprised of, I can and I have heard your same complaint about that construction.

Since languages are fluid it may become a more accepted construction.

I'm really hoping they just didn't have a clue in this economy that so many would lay out 4 Franklins for this card. If this thing has issues my RMA will tke 6 months : (

I was set on the ASUS EAH card but was't fast enough to grab one. NewEgg e-mailed me and it was gone when I got there. For some strange reason my local Micro Center had 1 XFX HD 5870 on the shelf. It was $449 and dropped to $399 the day I saw the ASUS go "deactivated" at NewEgg. I got it!

It was worth every cent! My system runs 6 C` cooler. I have 6 gigs and normally use 17%. That dropped. Everything is faster. Crysis and Far Cry 2 are stunning!

965EE COREi7 (OCed 4.14ghz) 35 C` when just surfing, playing, etc.
Noctua NH12 /wdual fans

and the SMOKING XFX HD 5870 (OCed 890/1290 Mhz) 31C`

Where are the Nvidia cards is what I want to know. We need a rival stand up in order to get this thing rolling!;)

Well the news is NV simply stopped making them. They have been EOL'ed pending Fermi release.

I to at first couldnt get my hands on teh 5870..few weeks passed though and thanks to newegg.com email alert i was sent i got mine which was about 2 weeks after the first release of the cards FYI. :D AMD Pwnz ;)

Then look elsewhere. Newegg is hardly the be all and end all of component shopping. Especially with their pricing and shipping.

This post made me laugh! Not at you, with you.

Newegg has become quite the price gouger lately...Unless you like paying over the MSRP for a product.

The name Newegg Is now In the same league as BB.

Interesting news. Especially that link to show nvidia is now aiming to hit feb - apr for volume to be in the channel. So TMSC is still having problems getting good chips at 40 or are the AMD chips the only ones at 40 that are having problems? I thought 4xxx series was at 40? You have to wonder if it is the process or the materials being used. If AMD is using cheaper materials to cut costs no one involved is going to say that for fear of hurting their image.

I believe that nvidia's chip is done when it is for sale. With that said I think nvidia knows that people are not waiting if they need a new card now so they are better off making sure the cards work right and don't have the issues the g80 had with lose connectors and such. The other twist is that the new cards will hit the same time as their new nforce (MCP89 &MCP99) release.
