anyone psyched, demon's souls?

i bought the game and i guess im a little confused... how is it fun to go through the same level 20 twenty times after you die repeatedly? I know this is going to be unpopular with some, but there is a reason games dont do this any more..

am i missing something?

You aren't missing anything. The game is known to be tough. Maybe you should sell it to me before you get more frustrated. :p

am i missing something?

a great deal of satisfaction that comes when you finally do beat a level.

It's not a game for everybody. The difficulty does harken back to the old days. But it's so well executed, and the worlds are so creepy and mysterious, I keep coming back for more.

*sigh* i know. i signed up for this. i just got angry when i died.

Be angry with yourself and seek vengeance by diving back into the fray :)

I've been through 1-1 so many times I can one-shot just about everything there.. and I know where all of the enemies and the traps are.

The red-eyed knight still gives me some trouble, though.. so I usually avoid him :p

Yeah, there is a reason they don't make games like that anymore, its called massive change in market conditions. There was a time when consumers demanded long games, and they didn't care how they got that way as long as the basic game play was interesting. Now, 20+ years later, the market is VERY different because there are tons more games made each year, and technical limitations makes most of them shorter games. It is almost a blessing to many of us that there is an interesting, challenging, and somewhat long RPG available again.

I take him on for the 2k souls. Since I get him half the time it is still faster souls than anything else on the level.

Red eyes is easy, you don't even have to defeat him in combat. Just aggro him and then run to the building with the staircase and have him run at you near an edge, he'll fall off and an easy 2k souls.

Our gamestop got em in..... Sold out immediatly.... and I was left in the dust, I could not get my copy.
But we have two collectors editions, ones going to me, other going to my assistant manager. lol

I picked up Demon's Souls a couple days ago and I love the game but I think I'm going to have to put it down and beat Uncharted 2 first then come back to it. Also I'm at the very end of Valkyria Chronicles and need to beat that... ahhh! Too many games and so little time. Uncharted 2, then finish VC, and then start on Demon's Souls; all while studying for CCNP, doing P90X and moving into a new apartment soon, sigh.

btw if you want to buy this game, do it now, because I picked up the last one at my local GameStop and the other GameStop in the area was sold out.

I could see this game being like Yakuza, sell out and not get restocked a ton. Buying it soon might be a good idea.

This reminds me, who the hell came up with that name? lol

HAHAHA. I know... lost in translation eh?

I still find the voice over for the maiden hilariously addicting, "May THINE strength help the world be mended."

Her over emphasis of THINE cracks me up...

well today was a productive day.

i got almost three hours in, allowing me to kill the Flamelurker (no tricks, just dodging and fighting :)) and the dragon god, whose souls along with the consumption of the dragon gods demon soul allowed me to level up my vit 1 level, end and dex 2 levels, and my strength 8 levels to 30 so i could use the dragon bone (or keel) smasher :D only bad part is that its a large ass weapon, so it slows my rolls down, but right now its doing 384 damage!

i havent really found a productive use of it besides taking one, maybe two, bigger enemies down quick, but in close quarters, especially with a red knight, i still need to use the bastard sword, since the dragon smasher is slower, but mainly because its so big that it hits the walls and the attack doesnt go through :(

also a question to those who have killed, or beaten Old King Doran in his challenge, how the hell did you do it? even with the dragon bone smasher when i do the strong R2 attack, it sends him flying back (pretty far) and on the ground, yet it only inflicts a little over 20 damage....

I hope you know that the demons souls are unique souls used in crafting and one of the major points of upgrades for making weapons unique along with obtaining certain spells/magic.

Consuming them for souls should be a last resort.

Been trying to trade with Crow without looking up hints but to no avail!? I resorted to the wiki and it says this:

If the crow likes your item, load your current game. A new item will appear on the right side of the tree for you to pick up.

Load my current game!? WTH!? WTH is that all about!? How the hell am I supposed to know to reload my game to trade with the bastard? Gah... I like the difficulty the game has and the intrigue of learning about upgrading weps with souls, etc... but something like this is ridiculous.

You're not supposed to load your game. The idea is that you drop an item, leave the area, and come back. When you return the crow has swapped your item for something else. You can just force this to occur instantly by loading the game.

I'm not sure how this is a problem anyway. I like games with secrets like this; it's much more interesting than having everything spoon fed to you with maps and quest markers and detailed instructions on everything.

This game is incredibly addicting, such an awesome experience. I just beat the big black blob in the first area. How do you do an area over without having things unlocked??

Well sure I understand that and I also was keen enough to figure out by his crow talk that I could obviously trade with him. It's just odd that I have to totally leave the area to get the transaction. That is what is frustrating. How was I supposed to logically deduce that?

I have a pretty big backlog of games to play before I get to Demon's Souls. Although I know once I play it I will spend hours playing it. One of those kind of games.
Will there still be the online community for it a few months down the road? Does it have that type of "lasting power?"

i do, and i looked up all the possible things you could make the dragon god's soul into, and i found out none of them were useful for my character unless i put like 14 levels of upgrades to meet the requirements, which wasnt worth it for my character

you dont have to leave the area to do a trade. if you drop an item the crow likes, he will acknowledge it, and then you can leave the area if you want to, or you can load up your save and your item will be there next to the tree.

I've only beat Phalanx and the Tower Knight so far and here's my take on the game at the moment. For at least the last 10 years or so games have gotten to be Hold My Hand Because I'm A Pussy Fest. With newer games the odds aren't exactly in your favor but they are more so disproportionately to the average enemy. You're like a giant in a room full of noobs. Unless you're just not paying attention or don't give a damn, you'll finish most newer games with little trouble at all. Demon's Souls has a more realistic approach to it somewhat. You start off a total noob, basically the only thing you have up on the enemies is you have actually have a brain. Demon's Souls is like learning an instrument, learning to paint, or some other type of skill/artist pursuit. It takes repetition to learn the enemy rhythm and to level up. It teaches you to be careful and to take your time with just the average enemy. When you get to a new enemy or a boss it teaches you to observe and not to under estimate your enemy instead of just rushing in like and idiot. Just like playing an instrument it takes time with learning the mundane stuff to get your chops, to get good and to eventually be a virtuoso. Demon's Souls is just like that. Take the time and you'll be a virtuoso of death to your enemies.

I hope they make a sequel. I can't get enough of this game. I haven't even seen world 4 yet, because I want to savor it.

It will be interesting to see NPD numbers. DS should be #2 behind UC2 on the PS3 top ten. I don't think 200k is unreasonable. It's getting a lot of praise. I hear most brick and mortar stores are sold out.

I saw people selling the delux edition strategy guide for $40 on ebay, just the guide, not the game. :p

yeah I can see this game being hard to get in a lot of areas. ds was completely out of stock or not carried at multiple wal marts, target, and best buys in my area. finally found a copy at gamestop and made the purchase of the last wrapped copy they had. I went to gamestop last because I hate that store and try to avoid going there. I feel dirty now :(

I experienced my first invasion today; was totally taken by surprise since I normally play in Soul form. Not quite sure of the guy's level, but we duked it out in a narrow hallway and periodically backed off to eat some grass. After a few minutes, I decided I was tired of his presence so I bumrushed him when he was low on health. He was afraid to heal while I was hounding him, so even though I had zero stamina I was able to get some licks in to finish him off. It was a lot more exciting than I thought, though I don't think I'm going to risk losing my grinding gains by staying in Body form. :D

Just got this game, time to try it out! Looking forward to countless hours of rage after dying over and over again.

I've died... a lot. Normally I get pretty pissed off in some games because dying just seems cheap sometimes. Not this game though. When you die, you can clearly see that it's your fault. Last time I died was the result of me trying to sneak in one more hit. Yeah... bad idea.

Awesome game though and it's nice to see my PS3 getting more play than my 360 for a change.

It's not always your fault per se.

I have died a few times because of things seeming fucked up, a la the hit detection (especially on those worm things in 2-1/2-2). I'd go to hit them and it didn't detect a hit or when I'd move after they breathed their fire and then take dmg when it wasn't spewing anymore.

Then there are times where it seems you hit an enemy and even though you hit them it doesn't "interrupt" thier attack and they hit you a split second after you just hit them with no time for you to block or dodge.

This game is just blowing my mind. I thought it was going to be a oblivion clone but it's a whole different game.

The combat is insanely ADDICTING - backing up and waiting for the perfect stab - sidestepping to avoid arrows.......I never buy $60 games but I feel like this was the best purchase I've ever made.

Heard how hard the game was and as soon as I got to the tutorial boss I got owned, hard. Then heard how you don't want to mess with the shop keepers in the nexus so whenever I was in the nexus I would keep all fingers off L1 LOL.

Went in 1-1 and died 7 times - mostly because I thought I could take the red knight. The levels are freaking enormous and I love how there are back doors so when you die you can take a shortcut.

God this is prob the second best game this generation - behind MGS4 imho. I hope Demon's Souls 2 is even harder, however with more of an emphasis on group play/mmorpg aspects.

The phantoms and stones you acquire are perfect. I want to beat the game solo. But the cooperative element is well done, the PvP aspect is a nice touch.

I think it would be hard to balance if the game design was tilted for more group/mmorpg play. But they could probably tweak the current implementation even better.

I wonder how long it took to make ? 2-3 years ? I would really like to see a sequel this generation. This is the first console RPG I've truly loved in a looong time. DS2 would make an awesome launch title next gen.

I'm level 46 or so. I've killed Phalanx, Tower Night, Armor Spider, Leechmonger, Vanguard, and Adjudicator. I've been farming on the beginning of 4-2 trying to stock pile healing items and such. This game is freaking great. Sleeper hit of 2009. I fear though it'll get overlooked by Uncharted 2, Dragon Age Origins, and CODMW2. I sure hope they make a sequel.

I'm probably going to finish the game sometime this week; I've cleared all of the other worlds and I can't imagine 1-4 taking that much longer. It was an incredible experience and I'm definitely going to write a glowing review of it on my site.

Not sure yet if I'm going to try for New Game+, but I'm seriously considering it. :D

i started farming on 4-2 also so i could get enough endurance to wear my armor without slowing my movement down, but in the end i made it disproportional, so im probably just gonna beat world 5 and 1-4, and then farm the necessary souls to make everything closed to aligned again. Then begin new game+ :D

I picked this up the other day along with Uncharted 2. While Uncharted 2 is pretty cool, Demon's Souls I find much more addicting. This is just the type of game I've been looking for. I just completed 1-1 last night, so everything is still very new. I don't quite understand all of the game mechanics, and worlds, and, well everything. Lots to learn still, but I know I will enjoy this game to the end and then some.

I'm up to level 28 with my knight. I am 95% melee with that other 5% being when I whip out the wand to smack away flies. So far, I've taken down Phalanx (1-1), the Red Dragon (1-2), Tower Knight (1-2), Armor Spider (2-1), and the False Idol (3-1). I rescued Sage Freke to be able to get Warding (Total Protection) spell.

Figured I'd go take down FlameLurker tonight and get the flame stone. I want to have a Scraping Spear ready when invaders come.

I was worried about those bell-ringing illthids on 3-1 because everybody was whinging on how tough they were. Odd, two strong stabs with my Winged Spear +3 and they were on the ground before they could even get the hammer to the bell. I'm also having fun kicking the hell out of the red eyed knight on 1-1.

I have to say, this is the most emotions I have shown playing a game recently. When I take down a boss, it is a mini celebration of smack talking and excitement. Ok, for most... killing the False Idol was more like taking candy from a baby. The black phantom just outside her door was more of a bother.

The most impressive boss i've fought so far was the Dragon God, it wasn't that hard (once you realize the pattern and what to do) but he was the biggest boss and most terrifying one I've faced so far.

has anyone found any really good resources for players that are just starting out? I see the guides on gamefaqs etc, but I hope to find a guide that is very basic and describes what weapons to get and upgrade right away, best place to grind out some exp, etc.

Have you checked out the Demons Souls wiki? I probably go there at least 10 times a day.

I am currently level 43. I have over 55 hours of played time in already. I have done quite a bit of farming and more dying that I would like to admit. I can say without a doubt the majority of my deaths were due to me being either stupid, impatient, or retarded. A few deaths were of the bullshit variety due to terrain issues causing me to fall to my death or the target lock feature completely fucking me while next to a massive drop off (3-2).

Those stoneskin dudes at the beginning of 2-2 have probably killed me more then any other enemy/area in this game that I have seen so far. They hit me twice with their pick and I'm toast. So when I get stupid and run in they gang rape me and it's curtains. I hate those fuckers. But, if I play correctly and use my winged spear like I should and don't let them get close, then they are easy. That's the biggest thing to remember.. don't be a dumb ass and run into a group of enemies. However, it is fun getting a triple kill with one thrust of the spear.

So far I have killed Phalanx (1-1), Tower Knight(1-2), Red Dragon (1-2) , Armor Spider (2-1), Flamelurker (2-2), Fool's Idol (3-1) and Vanguard (4-1). It took me a while to kill Flamelurker. He was by far the toughest boss I have seen yet. I had to get my strength leveled up to 22 so that I could use my Purple Flame Shield. It was really the only way I could beat that guy solo.

I just cleared all of 4-1 tonight and made it to the entrance to the Adjudicator's area, but I logged right there, so that I could finish it tomorrow. While I was wandering around gathering all the ground loot from 4-1 I got invaded twice (first time ever) and it was fun killing some real players for once. First phantom I fought was easy. The 2nd phantom that invaded me got a backstab off and I almost died, but I managed to finish them off before they got me. Was quite the adrenaline rush!

This is probably the best game I have played since Diablo 2. I cannot remember that last time I have been more enthralled in a game (MMO's don't count :p) since Diablo 2. This is easily the GOTY for me and I could have sworn it was going to be Batman:AA. I haven't played Batman or any other game since I got Demon's Souls on Oct 7th.

Ahh tower knight is so freaking easy but he's so freak hard!!!!

They programed the AI perfect. You think you know what they are going to do, but then they just freaking do something else.

I've died to tower knight like 8 times so far but I'm loving the fight.
