Why all the mystery and deception anyway? If he took a medical leave of absence so Apple could focus on their products and people wouldn't focus on him why not simply state why he needed a transplant (or even the fact that he needed one, instead of alluding vaguely to "hormonal imbalances" and "simple procedures")... Seriously, could he be any more of a diva? Shame on the Journal for catering to it too...
But it's also illegal to lie to shareholders. I wouldn't be surprised to see a shareholder lawsuit over this.
I have to wonder if this procedure cost someone else a chance... it's widely understood that celebs and "famous" or wealthy folk get favors, so I just gotta wonder now if Jobs has a liver that potentially was set up for someone else and because of who he is, perhaps things just "worked out" in his favor.
It's an obvious question so... I'll be the first to put it out there in this thread I suppose. Reasonable doubt, right?
He's a CEO over a global corporation that has again become profitable due to HIS iron fist way of doing things.
He croaks tonight and Apple's stock dies as soon as the market opens. Shareholders absolutely DESERVED to know that the CEO of the company they invested in was having such major surgery done so that they could determine what they wanted to do with their stock.
You need to brush up on your law. there is not one out there that says the CEO or any officer or employee needs to state their medical condition.
When all that nonsense started, it went nowhere for a reason: no grounds for a lawsuit.
I'm pretty sure as an employee you can't just say you're taking a leave of absence for months on and w/o going into some specifics. I'm not saying he has to disclose his medical records or bring a note from the doctor, but there's a huge difference between an "hormonal imbalance" and needing a liver transplant, lol.
Shareholders absolutely deserve to know what's going on, not necessarily the details, but a CEO is not entailed to disappear willy nilly w/vague medical reasons as his sole excuse, and if they do have that right then that's just screwed up because the rest of the working force in this country does not.
I actually feel sorry for the guy, though I am no fan. He'll have frequent lab work and nasty drugs for the rest of his life, if he didn't already as a cancer survivor.
You need to brush up on your law.
And you need to brush up on your reading comprehension.
As I said earlier, the issue isn't his health, its the fact that we now know that Apple lied about his health to reassure investors. Jobs certainly has a right to some level of privacy, but when Apple said he was a-ok and just had a "hormone imbalance" they were deliberately misleading investors.
When you get a big boy job, you will have something called a PTO. You can use a PTO if sick, if you want a day off, vacation, etc. You do not have to say why, you just have to have a PTO that has not been used.
PTO = paid time off.
My 401k has about a quarter of a mil spread out over numerous companies, money markets, funds, etc. i also invest on the side, long term and 'day trading.' There is not a single law out there that says an executive of any company has to state anything about his health.
On a side note, if we all were forced to sign up to be donors of vital organs (in exchange for social security or federal aid etc) there would be organs a plenty, no one would have to worry if the doctors will let you die for your organs and it would be the ultimate form of file sharing. No more long waiting lists. We all die, if it can be used its one less things for the worm to eat when you die. Think about it. We have the power to make it a non issue.
