To be frank, I'm a little concerned about the repercussions of this preemptive boycott. It seems to send the message that we aren't happy (good) and that nothing Valve can do in the next five months is going to change that (not good). In other words, it seems to imply that we're all simply done with Valve and that they needn't worry about this hardcore PC gamer market any longer, as we've already jumped the metaphorical fence. Instead, shouldn't the message be "we're mad as hell, so what are you going to do to fix this?"
Honestly, I feel that is the message being sent. I don't feel like anyone is saying they can't fix it, but rather that with the limited amount of time given their alleged release date, it will not be a product worth a full-game price. I think the best thing they could do at this point is to release it at an expansion pack price. I have a feeling that they are going to do some sort of package deal where you get L4D and L4D2 for $50 or whatever. This doesn't work for me, either, since I've already purchased L4D twice, once at full price on release and once at half price on a sale. I don't need a third copy sitting around.
In any case, the pricing is mostly what is going to determine if and when I buy this product. I dislike that they have given so little attention to L4D, but at the same time I understand them wanting to change up the dynamic a bit, which does not fit into the original L4D style at all.
