So basically what anti-virus / firewall / adblockers / spam stoppers ... you know what i mean ... what are you guys using? is it affective? how frequently do they update? cost?

Its just that there are so many companies out there, dont know which is good.

thanks for the help

Comodo firewall, Avast AV, Peerguardian 2.
Good for any type of use.

PG2 can use custom block lists created for a company to use on all PCs or automatically download whichever lists you select.

I also use Firefox with Adblock Plus, Noscript, Flashblock and CookieSafe

ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus for clients and servers. I also sit most of my clients behind a content-filtering UTM appliance or at least set them up with OpenDNS to block a lot of malware before it even makes it on to the network.

eset eset eset, you can get it through myself or yeolde or probably some others if your a business, if your home user just get newegg

Avira Free or Avast for home and friends.

Trend Micro Officescan for Businesses.

Trend Micro Officescan for business
ESET NOD32 for everyone that wants to pay
AVG for those who don't want to pay

have you guys used ESET for business? i swapped all my clients that were using Officescan to ESET.

i use ESET for everyone, free people get Avira or AVG

For all, just for some knowledge, what would you guys suggest.

Small business?

Untangle UTM as their primary router....scans all traffic for viruses, spam, spyware, has content filtering.

Eset NOD32 on the desktops and on the server.

DNS forwarding on the DC using OpenDNS for added protection.

My home:
Untangle UTM w/ openDNS for router/gateway
Servers-all run Symantec AV except mail server
Mail server has built in AV, onlt has ports open to do its job.
Use firewalls on all PC's
Bi-weekly scans on laptops with Malwarebytes. Use no AV on the laptops.

Prior to Untangle UTM I was using PFsense. I was going to try to move to Endian. No where did I see where to put in my admin password during setup. According to the directions I had, it stated I would be prompted...meh.

At work *shudder*. I didn't set it up, BUT its a d-link dir-655 then pretty much the whole network. Servers/desktops have symantec AV. Some desktops/laptops have nothing. Management DEMANDS I get every Tom, Dick, and Harry on the wifi when they come in. Most computers are up to date.

It makes me cringe. I want to setup a dedicated UTM solution, and replace ALL the computers, create vlans, and segregate shit a little more. Whatever. My PC is locked down like Fort Knox. I am told I am paranoid, I get up to get coffee, PC is locked. What, password protected file sharing? What, strong passwords & user names? They have a naming and password scheme at work thats extremely predictably. IDK I'd LOVE to lock the whole network down a bit more.

We currently support symantec 10.x, 11 endpoint, kaspersky business, home, and eset home and business.

Symantec for the most part are clients that didn't want to switch off or are still under old contracts. A few of are non-profits will be sticking with it as well as they give it to them for half of what eset and others will sell for.

2 years ago or so we started moving to kaspersky which was selected by one of the other server admins at my company. He lied and said I ok'd it when I had said I wanted to look at it and compare it to eset. It is a good program although right now its 08 support sucks ass. The jokes about av10/09/08/xp/whatever are one of the reasons I've been moving away from it. Kaspersky just can't seem to detect that program and it is really pissing me off. The shit support for 08 also sits bad with me.

I've been moving most clients to eset although we have renewed a few clients kaspersky just to really be able to compare them in the future. For the most part I don't see us adding more users though as eset has been doing a better job.

Currently I run eset home on my desktop and the business version on my notebook. Home server has kaspersky on it as the license is still valid.

I put 11 endpoint on my mom's laptop and she still managed to get one of those av2009 variants and a bunch of other shit.

WoW ... it seems like ESET, AVAST, KASPERSKY .... are good.

Most of the time its for home but ... i am also looking for a solution for a server that i am setting up.
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1398779

There server is going to be used as a SQL database (not heavy), VERIFONE PC CHARGE software ... so i would like to lock it down.
I am afraid to even ask, but ... Mcafee?

I wouldnt put kaspersky on that list, I just dont really care for them much anymore. Does not seem to do as good of a job as others.

It's surprising to see them plummet so much over the past year or so....they used to be so far above others in detection...even Eset.

I use Antivir and no firewall.

I'm gonna download Comodo today and try it out.

Untangle in bridge mode behind a pfsense firewall. And I know a lot of people will bemoan the fact that I have been playing with Microsoft Forefront Client Security and like it.

The ONLY good AVs are Avira AntiVir (my #1) and NOD32 (my #1.1, but I NEVER recommend it for home use)

Not sure why anyone would knock you for that. We have it deployed to about 500 workstations. It has been spot on so far. Sure there are improvements that need to be made but it has been good for us.

NOD32 for pay, Avira for free.

My NOD32 subscription ended this month, so I'm going to check out Avira Premium for a year just for shits n giggles (and a better heuristic scanning engine than NOD32).

That's just not true. Avast is pretty doggone good as well.

It's not that good actually. While it's signature based detection is excellent, it's heuristic scanning leaves a lot to be desired, especially in the large amount of false positives it spits out.

Ummm, no to McAfee. ESET, Kapersky, etc all have Business versions which may be installed on server operating systems. I, personally, would recommend ESET for the server.

Avira's free version doesn't provide protection against spyware, while Avast's free version does...according to their respective websites.

Depends on how they classify "Spyware". Most spyware is lumped into Malware in general now a days. Without knowing how they classify the differences I can't really argue that point :). For example, Antivirus 2009 is both a trojan AND spyware.

In anycase, in the latest comparatives, Avast scored a large number of FPs (47+) vs. Aviras 17 (Eset had 7 I think, but they don't have a free version). FPs play a big roll in how I rate how good a package is.

Yet time and time and time and time again I use AntiVir to cleanup computers that people thought they were protecting by using Avast or AVG...but the buggers slipt past.

AntiVirs detection rates are far far above them...look at av-comparatives.org

I may switch then. How do we know av-comparatives.org's results are worth trusting?

We don't know 100%, but there have been a few times where some AV software developers threw a hissy fit and didn't submit their software for comparison. They seem pretty legit though.

It's the most trusted, respected "unbiased" and "realistic" testing site out there. They don't accept advertising contracts in trade for good ratings. Hang out at any of the good "antivirus" forums, such as wilders security forums.

So I went to the site and I'm with you guys...seems legit. I may switch then. The only thing I see people mentioning in forums is that avira isn't always stable...what do they mean by that?

Well I switched to Avira from NOD32. Going to check it out for a year. So far it's stable on 3 computers (2 Vista64, and my laptop which is Windows 7).

The odd thing I noticed is a VERY slow initial bootup on Vista after the install. It might be something to do with superfetch, not 100% sure yet. No crashes or anything like that though.

Since we're talk about new/improved A/V, anti spyware software I'll post 2 other pieces of good software for getting rid of all kinds of crap.

Malwarebytes [http://www.malwarebytes.org/]

and the new king (and really stupidly named)

SuperAntiSpyware [http://www.superantispyware.com/] the same guys who made the superpopup blocker back in the day.

Both these are really good at getting rid of spyware/malware.
