New StarWars MMO Dev Diary from BioWare

if it works, it'll automatically be better than SWG.

First off it is being made by BioWare, to me they have not put out a bad game yet. And they say they are putting in all their blood and sweat into this game more than ever before. Plus Lucas Arts is really giving them a big budget and letting them go hog wild in that universe.

And BioWare making their first ever MMO, I am sure have been researching games that are hot like WoW and why they are good, and also look at the over hyped games that died like Vanguard, AoC, WAR, and see why those flopped.

i heard from the SoE boards that you can buy ingame items from a bioware store or something like what there doing for EQ1 and 2 now in the exchange

This game seems very far along in the videos...wonder if they will surprise with a beta release much earlier than we expect ? Like this Fall ? To fool Blizzard, just in case they have a wicked WoW update or 3rd expansion ready.

Someone takes things a little too personally...

I don't even play wow. I just hate when people call for a WoW killer before the game even entered the public beta stage. Seriously, while you may like the concept, doesn't mean that everybody else will....

Actually I hated the Prequels, thought George Lucas raped the story, could have been so much better if they did in a totally different direction. Only good movie was Empire Strikes Back, and half of Jedi, thats it.

Now this StarWars MMO is set in a cool world, and being made by Bioware which is one of the top RPG makers ever in the market, so I have faith they will create a solid game.

They could remove the StarWars name for all I care, I am just excited about a MMOPRG created by BioWare and set in sci/fi world.

See, the whole Sci-fi thing throws me off, in an RTS...sure, in an MMO....

Why should MMOs only cater to Dungeons and Dragons nerds?

I didn't even play that...lol

Why? It should not, but I feel as if an MMO should take place during legendary time, when skill was everything. I love swinging my big sword and shooting with my awesome bow. I do not like throwing grenades, shooting with guns and using vehicles IN AN MMO. That is what primarily threw me off about Fallout 3. The whole idea of shooting somebody 50 times with a gun...I loved Oblivion though.

Dude MMO's are the same setting no matter what the title on the box says, Fanatsay or Sci/Fi

WoW and this new StarWars will have alot in common, because they are MMORPGs, and all MMORPG's are very similar by nature;

- Have to meet NPC's and get quests

- Go into Forest settings, snowy settings, desert settings, volcanoe settings

- Use a sword that is glowing from enchantments, or light saber, same thing

- Start as a newb, and level up to be epic stud

- Kill creepy looking monsters

- Wear cool cloaks and capes

All that stuff I just listed is found in every MMO be it Fantasy or Sci/Fi. Some you ride a horse others a vehicle, but like 90% the same.

This could be good, but I'm not sure that Bioware has what it take to successfully take on an MMO, given their products histories of being massively bug-ridden.

It doesn't take "everybody" liking something to make it a WoW-killer; just more than like WoW.

Also, I personally hate the fantasy shit, with the elves and fairies and orcs and cliché upon fucking cliché and YAWN and SNORE. To me that's as sad as Star Trek. So, whatever. You like other stuff. Your tastes happen to be stupid, but you can't help it so I won't hold it against you.

I'll be more impressed when they can show more game content than people talking about game content. Because let's face it, people working for the company making the game aren't going to give you straight info on anything to do with a game in the works. Hell they have problems telling you the truth after it's released, it's always "next patch will hopefully address that."

I havent seen anything in the videos that I've watched yet that shows the combat being anything more than standing in place and whacking the thing with your lightsaber. The only slight hint was one video where it looked like they force pushed something, but the clip always switched then. Which I figured the thing just died and the push was the "death blow" or they don't have the combat working well enough yet that moving around during combat works.

Want to know how to kill your game? Just hype it up as a WoW-killer.
The only way to "kill" WoW would be to make an MMO that wasn't just a giant grind-fest while you add content, which would kill your profits when people finish it and don't resubscribe.

:p used to, play LOTRO now.

Well ya, the concept of the MMO's is not really changing, it is the implementation of the concept. While AOC had great idea behind it, implimentation sucked, that is why the game is/has failed.

While I understand where you are coming from, the presentation makes alot to me. Sure, the developers can take an MMO and skin it to their liking, I could be fighting an enraged tank and it would not differ from fighting a dragon.

The appearance of things is huge IMO. I love MMO's for character advancement, for quests, skills. I honestly will not enjoy an MMO that has modern/futuristic guns persay. I would also not enjoy an MMO that has me fighting in the future and using things such as granades. Why? Personal preference, I like the way games such as LOTRO appear. I want to take part in something that does not have bikes as mounts, something that caters to my style.

WoW released its expansion around the same time LOTRO did. At the time, I wasn't really playing either one of them, but have played both in the past. I knew that I was going to go back to one or the other right around that time, just wasn't sure which one. The fact that WOTLK had actual BIKE CHOPPERS for mounts, really threw me off. I do not want something like that to ruin my immersion.

Funny because no one has mentioned this as a WoW killer.

I for one am excited for this game and hope it has a successful launch. Not sure why sci-fi does not have a place in MMO/RPGs as they have been around forever. Sure D&D hit it first way back but Sci-Fi was right around the corner. Still have found memories of the Battletech universe.

I totally agree, WoW having motorcycles in game really threw me off, that is just plain wrong for a fantasy setting, and proves Blizzard just went too far with WoLTK. Bikes in WoW just kills the atmosphere of the world and makes it a joke.

Have you ever played a Warcraft game before? The theme of engineering, of "heavy industry" has been present throughout in the form of dwarves, gnomes and goblins.

There have been prop flying machine and tank models in WoW since the very beginning. There were several units in WC3 that were not a far cry from a motorcycle.

If SW:TOR does indeed go with a microtransaction business model, I know I won't be playing it.

Yes, but I think it's more of the fact that the chopper design is taken from modern motorcycles and not a fantasy-style one. It literally looks like they took something from the Teutuls and slapped WoW textures on it.

yeah im staying far away from this new sw game. Any items you can buy ingame for real world money is gonna take a dump on this game when every "8lukeSkyw4alker" will be running around with "The ultimate sabre of force" in thier hand, that they bought for 50 bucks.

And if this game is pvp thats going to make it even worse

Quote below me pretty much sums it up. Stuff in W3 and other Warcraft games fit in. I could see X in the game, it makes sense. Everything sort of fit in together well, making the world truly fantastic. The new motorcycle is just it, a motorcycle. To me, it is completely out of the world and ruins immersion.

Blizz raped Warcraft in the BC xpac. Lore is dead and pretty much like taking a trip to Disneyland. The game is utter crap. Fun and entertaining crap but still a turd. I hope this game can be entertaining while still forging a great story without MUCH compromise.

I would not say that. I thought BC was pretty cool actually, I think WOTLK did more damage to it. I think Blizz are trying to maximize on profit and appeal to the everyday consumer, versus those who have stood by them since release.

Real Money Transactions are a killer to me. If SW is going to have that, I am sure they will hurt more people than they can imagine.

*cough* Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood *cough*

Which is what they've been trying to do since day one. The reason it's so successful is because it appeals to a VERY wide array of people and playstyles. They were never intending to make a niche product. It's been a product built for mass appeal since the beginning.

Well yea, but they appealed a tad more towards MMO crowrd. They stayed true to the setting and I personally liked the game. With WOTLK, they changed that big time. They try to appeal to the most casual of crowds and the widest array of players.

Think about it. And even easier leveling, ability to start at 55, 3x xp when playing with somebody you referred.

Aside from all that, they now add things to the game that are completely out of place in that setting, that is nuts.

Like.....?

The fuckin motorcycle????

I have to agree, the motorcycle is too much. I understand gnomes and dwarfs can engineer cool gadgets and stuff, and sure a gyro-copter and mechanical mounts make sense, but a motorcycle made from a design by 20th century Earthlings  Earth is not even a known world to Azeroth ? That is over the top and lame for Blizzard to go there.

But what do I know, I actually went back to WoW this week, created my first Death Knight because my older Brother wants to play WoW again, and he also made a new DK :D

+1 for this turning into a WoW thread.

Personally I'm looking forward to this. I really hope this isn't micro-transaction based. But still, it's looking better and better all the time. I plan on going a Sith straight up. If I'm feeling generous, maybe, at some time I could narc for the boys in blue... maybe.

Yeah I believe this thread is about SW:Tor, not World of Warcraft.

Dont forget the space fairing aliens that crash landed in BC to help the Alliance ROFL. Only thing missing form that was a laser cannon.
