Anyone interested in giving the new Internet Explorer 8 RC1 a try can hit this link and get your download on. According to the overview, IE8 is faster, easier, more private and more secure. The download is just over 13MB so give it a try and share your thoughts in the comments section.

I likey! It's pretty snappy in Win7 and on my spare XP Pro machine (running AthlonXP 3200+ and 1gb RAM).

Haven't installed it on my gaming rig though. Vista runs too perfectly for me to want to risk it with a beta software.

What's some good sites to test it on? Ones that were having problems previously?

I dont like the accelerator....atleast i dont think i do....yes i agree it seems snappier but im still hung up on firefox :D

No thank you sir..after Microsoft stating that IE in general has known issues some far back as with Win 98se and still npt Patched. I dont think so..Also im doing what Microsoft says since it has issues and using FireFox 3.05 or better and wont change that since the days of F F 2....Now if i could only get everyone here to play More Fortress Forever 2.2....

I still prefer Firefox, but only version 2.x, however if IE8 is a big improvement, I may give it a shot...

I'll give IE8 a go but am waiting for the official release. I've always been an IE guy. Tried Firefox (in fact do have it installed) but still like IE better (even though for the most part Firefox loads most webpages faster). The main thing I don't like about Firefox is the way it handles bookmarks. I like the way IE does it having the Favorites drop down display over the webpage instead of on the side and then resizing the webpage to the right like Firefox does it. I also like that when clicking a link from the Favorites drop down in IE, the box then disappears and the webpage loads. Doing this in Firefox and the result is the box stays open, webpages loads to the side, have to move the mouse out of the box and then webpages resizes again. That's nothing but a pain in the ass for me since I use the Favorites drop down to navigate more than anything else. I just can't get used to it.

when i try to install it says... not compatible with your architecture (32/64 bits)

do i have to manually uninstall ie 8 beta?

My brain hurts reading this.

You realize IE4 in Win98SE is 4 versions, 11 years ago, right?

Err...firefox has a bookmarks menu like the favourites menu. Works as above how you say IE does. Maybe you need an updated version of FF?

Where the heck is the Windows 7 version? I tried running it but it fails the OS validation and says it's not supported.

As I sometimes do, before totally going on a rant about something, I'll actually let you back up your statement before I say anything else...

What, exactly, remains unpatched in IE8 that needed to be patched in IE4?

Is it better than Opera yet? The last version of IE kept freezing and staying open as a process everytime I closed it. Also, opening pages in different tabs was way, way slower than in Opera...not to mentionned it lacked basic features like previewing pages, thumbnails for favorites, undo, saving open tabs, etc.

Opera has more compatibility issues than IE still.

I wouldn't disagree with your statement about IE8 sucking. It did at first, but since the Windows 7 release of IE8 and also this RC it's getting a ton better.

Still lacks some of the little features that would be nice, but has lots of new ones too!

And FWIW IE still has undo and saving open tabs has been there since IE7...

Doesn't work with XP x64 Pro! I guess I'll wait for offical release.
Hence why it is a 32bit version that was linked.

Umm, isn't RC1 the one that is installed with Win 7? Mine says ... Beta. Interesting.....(yea i checked in the middle of my post.) Now, I would tell you that you'd have to uninstall the beta first unless you missed what Bone_enterprise posted earlier.

I personally don't feel like giving this one a try if it is any different than the IE8 that was integrated in the Win 7 initial install. If Windows Update wants to update it than fine, but I'm not going out of my way.

This version of IE8 crashes at half the webpages I go to... great experience here.

I switched from Firefox to Chrome not too long ago... I have to say it was a good choice.

meh, even if it's made of gold i'll never know, there's no way i'm updating IE beyond what is forced upon my pc. I'd emulate some obscure browser designed for a mobile phone before running IE again.. what can i say. crashes frustrate the heck outta me.

I use firefox mainly and chrome as a backup. Sorry IE there's just no space in my heart for you anymore </3

I love IE8. It's just enough of the features of Firefox "AwesomeBar" and Chrome "per-tab processes" but still has the feel of IE7 that I like. Yes, I actually like the look and feel of IE7.

Accelerators are handy, and tab groups are probably the most useful enhancement to browsing to me since, well, tabs. I like that IE can finally host protected and non-protected tabs in the same window (in Vista), though I think I'd like it if there were a much larger notice that protected mode was off. Web slices are a nice improvement upon simple RSS feeds, but I sadly don't expect many sites to take them up except for Microsoft owned and sponsored ones (Hey, [H], this is your chance to prove me wrong!)

Beta2 had some problems with navigation reliability and maintaining the state of cookies and web sessions between tabs, but I haven't had any of these problems yet with RC1. All in all, it's looking like a good release and a definite improvement over IE7. Now if only they would put their minds to improving Javascript performance to Firefox 3.1 / Chrome levels...

No real problems it does seem better than IE7 but that doesn't take much. Dont know why they cant get better Java support. It is crazy.

No good add ons is the killer. Looks like they are trying to fix that but the add on dont seem to do the job well. I just dont see them catching up anytime soon to much of a conflict of interest trying to support their own websites and programs at the cost of the user.

Right here on the [H]ardforums. W7 IE8 64 bit simply refuses to display the forums for more than about 1 second, I had to use FF.

If you dont use IE why even post in here? This is for the comments of people using it to post their experiences. Go make your own thread of "Why you hare IE" and stop crapping in here

I upgraded my work laptop from IE 8 beta 2 to RC 1.

So far so good. One problem I had before that kept me from putting it on my machine machine is that the admin page for our mail server would not work under IE 8 beta. However now it works just fine. So I would have to say that from what I have seen it seems to have been improved from older betas.

I'd like to chime in in case someone uses the software. LogMeIn Rescue (browser based remote assistance) will not work in IE8. Logging into LogMeIn Rescue will take me to a page that warns only Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 3 are supported.

Just a heads up if you're in the IT industry and use LogMeIn.

I still can't figure out how to get it installed in Windows 7. Anyone?

Works fine for me, but then again I just use the Free version, and only for my remote terminals.

LogMeIn Rescue administrator console is browser-base. The ActiveX console won't load in IE8.

The Free edition is an applet though, separated from the browser.

I wouldn't mind IE if it had a plug in like noscript for firefox, but IE is still a hole one can drive a truck thorugh.

From the IE Dev Blog:

IE Dev Blog said:
Note: If you are running Windows 7 Beta, you will not be able to install IE8 RC1. You will get an error message saying that your operating system is not supported since IE8 already ships in Win7. The IE8 RC1 available from Microsoft Download Center is a standalone upgrade for downlevel version of the OS only: Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008 and Window Server 2003.

I was NOT able to install IE8 on 7 either, tried the Vista version in hopes I could fool it but it just tells me OS not supported.

IE8 is not any more stable on 7 than it is on Vista, it sucks on both, and this baloney about Compatibility View is just that, sick and tired of the damn thing breaking every day and so is the wife, we have just gone over to Chrome as the default on 7 and although it has it's own drawbacks it doesn't crash every 5 minutes, my $.02 . . . I like the Accelerator fine, especially for 'straight to Wikipedia' searches, but I would be much happier if it worked, honestly, in 20 years plus I have never seen such a POS from MS, and yes, that includes Bob.

Also, AFAIK the default browser on 7 is the IE8 Beta 2 but I will check for sure when I get home . . . .

No, it's not even Beta 2, it's Beta 0, build 8.0.7000.0

does anyone REALLY have it working on 7?

Too bad, I hope the update comes through in a patch on windows update or something... for us beta users.
