Would I benefit from a new mouse?

So right now I have an MX510 with an 8 year old cloth mousepad. It does pretty well, but I notice that in games that the mouse tends to skip a bit. Eg if I'm sniping and I'm trying to line up a headshot then the mouse seems to skip from pixel to pixel and is not pinpoint accurate. Would something like a G5 and/or a new mousepad help?

A new mouse would help. I moved from an MX500 to a G5 and the difference is big.

The G5 'on the fly' DPI adjustments are a god send and is very useful in games such a Dead Space, GTA IV and Crysis Warhead.

The G5 is the best mouse out there for the hardcore gamer. I tried a G9 but I hated the claw grip, stick with the shape you know and love, that's what I say.

+1 for a G5 upgrade. they're wonderful for gaming.

you would notice a considerable difference going from an old cloth mousepad to a good firm mousepad like a ratpadz as well. they're made for accuracy and ease of gliding with a mouse.

Probably. I made the jump from a MX518 to a Trackman Wheel (Trackball) mouse and I can aim even better now. Sure it's a little wierd getting used to a trackball but much better then the sore arm I was getting.

The 518 tracks better at lower resolution settings than the G5--that is why they still make it.

I used an MX510 for years and loved it. However, I decided to try something new, so I got a Steelseries Ikari Laser mouse. I can't believe the difference - it is the nicest mouse I've ever used. Was leery of lasers, but now I am a believer. It's not the most popular mouse out there, but I absolutely love it! :D

Ratzpad are a good cheap mousing surface. Been using one for about a year now.

I think the biggest difference you would notice would be getting rid of the cloth mousepad and getting something like the Ratpadz XT. Yes, it will take you a while to get used to it. Once you get used to it, you'll feel like you're struggling to move the mouse on a cloth mousepad.

I would hesitate on replacing your mouse if there is nothing actually wrong with it and you like it. Mice and keyboards are personal preference and are different for each person. I'm sure I'll get flamed for it, but I still prefer my Logitech MX700 mouse over anything else out there. In comparison to my MX700, I can't stand the G series of Logitech mice and hate the MX Revolution. I also won't go with anything other than wireless mice on my main system which is also my gaming system of course. If I have to go wired again, I'd go back to my Logitech Trackman Marble+ full time and I've had that trackball close to ten years.

However, if you have the money and want to try out a new mouse as well as a new mousepad, go ahead and do so. I highly suggest going to a store and checking out the mice first to see if the mouse even feels right for your hand before buying or ordering one.

Usually I'd say no, but in your case, a new mouse may help. Most of the time the problem is the player, not the mouse, but when you recognize the small pixel deviation throwing off a headshot, then you're able to make use of the extra precision to improve your aim.

Don't bother with expensive mousepads, a simple cloth mousepad with a rubber bottom is all you need. Any of those $10 3M pads will be fine. In fact, some of those "gamer" pads get too slippery so the mouse will want to drift when you want it stop on a dot for a headshot.

I don't recommend the MX revolution, it's a bit more precise, but RF interference pops up now and then, maybe just for a quarter second every 20 minutes. It's usually harmless, but sometimes it happens at really bad intervals when you're playing a game. It's better than the MX510 in performance, no lagging, but just not as reliable. I love it for desktop use (I've got all 11 buttons bound to various desktop functions), but not for gaming. Also, it has big wide teflon feet that causes the mouse to drift a bit as well, even on a cloth pad.

Give the MX518 or G5 a whirl.

I personally prefer razer mice for gaming, and the MX revolution for everything else.
Yes I use two mice.

I dont believe in mousepads.. my table is made from cheapo wood and ive moused on it for a really long time. Theres plastic residue in a rather large area of where my mousing area is and its the best mousepad ive ever used. Yes ive used ratzpad and i think the ratzpad is a little bit smoother than my table but a little too smooth. Im ordering a G9 sometime soon (AKA one im not lazy), but i use a VX revolution and its good.

DAMN!!!!

Have games (and gear) gotten so precise that ONE PIXEL off to the right or left makes a difference of a kill or not.....

Geeeshhh!!!!

Ive GOT to get me a new mouse to see for myself what im missing. I have a simple simple $20 cordless Logitech mouse from Wal-Mart and it seems to do me just fine.

I saw on YouTube yesterday a video for the Cyborg mouse. It was like a freakin transformer kinda, heh. with a push of a button on the keyboard, the mouse stretches in or out automatically. Though I dont honestly see a point in that, I did think that was rather cool.

Im not saying its a good mouse or not, I have no clue, but interesting nontheless...Check it out....

Heh....That reminds me of this mouse pad my bro-inlaw got me last year. It was a really cool looking pad, typical size and all, but had some colorfull lightning on it and it was shinny, kinda like metallic almost.....but I had a laser mouse and it screwed with it BIG TIME, hehehe...was a cool looking pad though, LOL.

if you want a gaming mouse and you are right handed you only have 3 choices, OH AND THEY ARE ALL OPTICAL! laser mice SUCK at low sensitivity.

1. logitech mx518
2. microsoft internet explorer 3.0
3. razer deathadder.

pick one and please, dont buy inferior laser crap.

i went from a G5 (orange edition, with the single side button) to an mx518. the mx518 is half the price and twice as good.

As much as I love the MX510 and MX518, it's time to retire them imho. The G5 is better.

the thing is, it isnt. the mx518 has superior optical technology. Newer doesnt mean better. The G5 is trash compared to the mx518 and i dont know why anyone would chose one over a 518

What's so much better about the 518? Besides that it looks a lot better and has one more button.

Definitely needs to be backed up with more concrete specifics, please.

The MX518 is definitely a great mouse but the G5 and its successors are hardly "trash."

Again, this is another thread that really boils down to the millionth iteration of: Whatever I bought is the best and whatever I didn't buy sucks.

G5 cramp my very large hands. However moving from where you are @ to the G5 will pose no issue for you (same feel)

I'm still not sure over which to take, G5 or MX518.
1) which one tracks better with slight, precise hand movements?
2) which one glides smoother on the mousepad?
3) which one tracks better on cheap, cloth mousepads?

G5 is excellent for pretty much anything, but 1st gen laser stuff aren't so good for precision aiming.

You really need a Deathadder, MX518, or 3rd gen laser g9.

As I already mentioned, I felt the G5 would glide much smoother than the Death Adder (though that was on a hard mouse surface, not cloth).

However before I returned my Razer, I bought these from NewEgg:

They did a very good job making the Death Adder glide as well as the G5. I was really impressed with them.
