GameSpot - 7-Eleven to sell games 24-7-365

Gamers with a penchant for Slim Jims and Yoo-Hoo may have noticed something different on their last trip to the 7-Eleven: a selection of the season's biggest games, including Fallout 3, Guitar Hero World Tour, and Gears of War 2. Although those games are only available "while supplies last," they are by no means the end of the retailer's plans for the industry.

7-Eleven announced today its full-fledged entry into the gaming retailer market, saying that games are now a regular part of the chain's stock, right up there with Slurpees and potted meat food product. In addition to games, 7-Eleven is selling prepaid cards for a variety of massively multiplayer online games, as well as Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Network. In charge of the initiative is Michael Jester, the company's category manager for gaming and electronics.

"This is not just a holiday promotion for us," Jester said in a statement, "but a brand-new product line-up that will be available year-round. We may not be a total entertainment destination...yet, but we're hoping to expand our selection beyond the high-dollar, hot-selling games to include options for all budgets, like value-priced video games as well as DVD movies."

If 7-Eleven is going to be carrying games regularly, the convenience store's employees may need a bit of additional training. Along with numerous online reports of stores breaking release dates for their current slate of games, GameSpot employees were able to procure copies of Gears of War and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King before their official launches.

As for why 7-Eleven would get into games, the company said that its customer demographic "skews heavily" toward men in the 18-34 age range, which overlaps nicely with the gaming consumer population.

With the state of the economy, my guess is that they want to try every possible trick if it can improve their bottom line. I think it's worth the try.

Thats just F'ed up!!!

How can this be possible? The store FAMOUS for the quote "I no nothing, I just work here" is starting to sell games.

Next thing ya know, dogs and cats are going to have hybrid babies...kitpups.

"I'll take a pack of smokes, a cherry slurpee, and fallout3."

Seems like a logical decision to me. How many of us take a cruise to a 7-11 for some refreshments during a gaming binge?

thats funny cause my local 7-11 has fallout 3 haha

this is awesome, now when all the stores will be sold out of GTA V you can just walk down to your local 7-11 and pick it up

EDIT Nevermind this won't work since they will plaster niko's face all over the 224oz slurpees like they do with master chief lolz

The 7-11 near my job in San Francisco has been selling PS3/360/Wii games, DVDs and even Bluray flicks for quite a while.

Yes, because employees at game stores are notorious for being gaming geniuses.

A call I made to a local game store 10 days ago:

Me: "I'm calling to find out if you have the Xbox 360 VGA cable in stock."
Gaming Genius: "What? I don't think that even exists."

With the proliferation of always-on Internet, and the fact that gaming information has been ubiquitous on the WWW "forever," I don't need knowledgeable videogame store employees. All I need is a register monkey. Of course, the 7-11 store I frequent is operated by a great set of guys who probably know more about everything than the hipsters who work at the Gamestop in the mall.

Heh, I havent even seen a 7-11 down in Texas since I was a kid riding my bike to one to play quarter arcade. I thought they all died out. For that matter, the word 7-11 hasnt even been in my vocabulary since then.

So to me, it just seems really odd to go to one and buy a game. I imagine the cost is hyped up too....you know, CONVIENCE stores always hike up their prices...gotta pay for that convience.

They've been doing this for a few months around my area. It was kinda funny. Some friends and I went to a 7-11 the day before WotLK came out and the guy was like "Hey, you guys should come back later and pick it up. We have 2 copies! :D"

There's only one 7-11 I know of in my area (Toronto), and it's a run down PoS! Never seen them stock games. Doubt they ever will.

I remember going to California a couple years ago and the 7-11's there are bigger and full of good stuff.

There's a 7-11 in Vaughan, which is roughly half a hour from where I live. There are no 7-11's around this area at all.

Now I know where to get SC2 and D3 when they come out. Usin steam for everything else

That would be great if it helps make video game more accesible

They had a full rack of video games at my local 7-11 when I was staying in Tokyo. Another full rack of manga too. It was pretty sweet.

The 7-11 in Hawaii had spam musubi to my pleasent surprise. Local friend there told me it was one of the best. They had a lot of things we don't get in the mainland to my gf's jealousy. They seem to cater to the high concentration of Japanese Americans living there. One of the reasons makes me wanna move there but the opportunity and the public schooling there really sucks.

It's not a bad idea at all. I'd wager a LOT of spontaneous game purchases will be made. Especially by those who've had a few drinks and run out to pick up some munchies.

All the best convenience stores in Phoenix area IMHO are QT or Circle K. 7-11 certainly aren't my top choice even if they sold games.

the question is how many games would I have to buy to equal the amount of quarters I dumped into arcade games at 7-11 in the 90s. hmm

I would think this would make them a bigger target for robbers. Why just settle for $200 in mixed bills when you would get a bunch of brand new games you could sell on eBay for $60 each?

Cool, the closest 7-11 is actually many miles closer than any video game retailer in my town. :)

Doesn't really suprise me since they've been selling videogames in convienient stores including 7-11's in Japan for years.

Hey, sounds good to me. I personally don't care if the employees know a damn thing about games or not. They couldn't possibly be any worse than most other retailers. I will testify under oath that the gamestop employees near my home are complete fucking morons. If you're relying on these in-store retailers to educate you on games you need help. Good for 7-Eleven. I'll take a corn dog and an Episode 3 please.

The folks at my Gamestop are true hardcore gamers. I went in the other day to pick up Left 4 Dead on X360 and asked if I could move my $5 preorder to another game. Couldn't think of anything, so I asked for recommendations. The two workers then asked me what platforms I had and what type of games I liked then just went down the list off the top of their heads. It was disgusting! Not only did he mention like 20+ games, but I didn't know about or have interest for any of them. Looks like 2009 is going to suck balls after........ Empires: TW.
