Project: Galaxy 4.75

Have you tried the remote access features of WHS?

I have been using unRAID for about a year, but I am fed up with the slow writes, and limited feature set. I purchased WHS and should be getting it soon.

Did your rev.2 case include the rightmost thin mounting brackets in this photo?
http://www.norcotek.com/product_images/flyer/rpc4020_8.jpg

Mine didn't :/

Nope. the Rev 2 features a pinch bracket built into the case, the installation is easier and it's way more solid than the old revision.

Nope, have not bothered with remote accessability, I use my own programs to access the server remotley. If you are referring to the WHS remote console like as in the extensions, then yes, I have used that.

I think you will be satisfied with the performance, I am.

Newegg drop ships these, so you will always get the most up to date revision since it's dropped directly from Norco.

I was actually able to buy a few Supermicro X7DBE, however, I know that for WHS I don't need a fast processor. Do you know if a skt 775 can be used in a skt 771 motherboard? Do you have any other suggestion for ~$100.

775 is very diffrent from 771, it wont work. Also, you don't need a killer board like that for WHS, you should sell it and get a good motherboard and proc combo.

If you want to make that board work, you will need a 771 processor.

My two biggest concerns are:

1) Scalability: In in the future, I could use a card with eSATA ports and connect them to port multipliers in another case.

2) Network bandwidth: I had planned on buying a NIC that supports link aggregation.

The great thing about following the processes of others online is that is causes one to rethink problems....

I have to say that I thought Ockie was nuts for dumping the 1280ML to go with a Windows Home Server setup, but been thinking about it and it is not sounding so bad!..... Going to start playing with it on another machine and see where I end up....

Its awesome I love WHS im trying to write some add-ins for myself but thats turning out to be bigger PITA than I originally thought.

Which means only one thing: Ockie's a pr0n actor who rufies up the wife. ;) jk jk, i kid. :D

alcuin is going to get a beating next time I see him...

maybe not, he must think im sexy like all the ladies to be calling me a pr0n actor :p So I'll take it as a compliment, lmao

Yeah I thought I was nuts too, but you could nearly build two WHS boxes out of the cost of the 1280ml alone.

Let us know when you get some cool apps working.

Update: I bought two APC 3000 VA 3U Rackmount UPS's, just waiting to pick them up later this afternoon. Things are starting to come together, I had some problems with bad drivers on one of the galaxies and also I've been busy as of late prepping my snowmobiles (just bought a monster trailer, lol) and taking care of that. I will post pictures soon of the setup, still have two more galaxies to build and I will be complete!

Also, in the meantime, I have been replacing all my slim optical drives to slot loaders, they work just so much better in the norco cases and they look pretty clean too.

Ya, the card alone is high, let alone once, I grabbed the 2GB cache, and BBU for it, it is like $1300 strong.....

Update, I just picked up the two UPS systems, they are in a perfect condition and weight 136lbs each, lol

Yea I will im trying to have an add-in that will interface with Windows Virtual Server...This way from any of my computers in the house I can open up my WHS console app and be able to use my VM's....If I did this I could install Fedora Core5 with iSCSI enterprise Target(free) and have iSCSI on the WHS.

Yea I love my SlotLoad drive I might buy those from now on for all my computers. two of those would fit in a 5.25 bay with a lil homemade bracket...that way id have more room for HDD's

That is making my back hurt just thinking about it!

Yeah well I almost killed myself brining these down to the basement... I have a feeling they are way more lbs than I initially thought, they made galaxy feel like a joke. I even changed my mind about spacing them (i dont have much confidence in apc rails).

I can't complain either, they are just so much more practical and they dont have issues with pinching or the tray sticking.

Yea I just sold a APC2200VA 3u and it was in my house for quite some time picking that thing up was a humbling experience

nitrobass, did you give that StarWind iSCSI target software a try on WHS? If it works, I think I might move over to WHS as well.

When do you think it is a good time to install Power Pack 1?

I am planning on doing my build this weekend.

It doesnt work for me cause I have a quad core cpu in mine(which is overkill for WHS)...Starwind personal edition only allows you to use it on two cpu cores, also you can only have a single connection to it so all that is kind of a deal breaker for me.

Arg, was really wanting it to work.

My previous server was based on unRAID, which is really a great concept. However, writes are slow and you cannot do anything else with your server unless you are knowledgeable in Linux (which I am not).

Anyway, I will be using the parts from that server, and I just need some reassurance that it will be enough for WHS. I am mostly concerned about the CPU which is a Intel Dual-Core E2140. Do you guys think it would be powerful enough?

Another thing, I purchased the Norco case and noticed that it does not accommodate the mounting of a matx motherboard. I am using the ASUS P5B-VM DO board in my unRAID server, would I be able to mount it?

The cpu is more than enough, I'm using a 4050e in mine and they work great, not to mention sip power :)

I don't know if you would be able to mount it, I'd assume so if it has standard bolt patterns but I don't think norco or any big server case maker accomodates for those microatx boards. The other thing you can do is just buy a cheap motherboard.

Comparing the pattern to ATX boards, it seems that I won't be able to screw down the lower portion of the board. I guess I will have to be careful when plugging things in or out, which I won't do much of once everything is connected.

You could always use a generic standoff (the plastic pin ones) and then superglue a piece of plastic or something below it to make up for the super high norco standoffs.

Ya, even if there is not the correct mounting points, you can use JB wield or suck to "glue" the standoffs down, ps-rage did it very well in a build a long time ago, if you want, I can did up the link.....

I have the norco case and installed a gigabyte GA -MA69VM-s2 perfectly and am running WHS as we speak with 4x750 2x1tb and 2x500 gb wd hard drives in it and havent had a problem at all, knock on wood

I installed the motherboard, without any problems also. You can install a standoff screw next to the third PCI slot, which can provide more support of the lower portion of the motherboard.
