So school is starting, need help choosing what I should get, I don't know much about laptops, I barley kept up with the desktop industry, don't know anything about the laptops.

I don't really need anything for gaming, the biggest strain on it will be "home movies" and all that. I want something that is relatively small, tough not too small, my brother has the ibm x60 i think, as far as I'm concerned, its on the limit for lowest size. We also have a fat ass dell, too large.

A relatively big hard drive space would be a big pro, easily formatted preferably (I screw my os regularly).

So in conclusion, something that fits easily into a backpack, while not being too small (Inb4 oxymoron), I'll mainly be taking notes, and that kind of thing, suggestions? Price is flexible, tough try to keep it as low as possible.

Thanks.

Edit. Forgot XP GOD DAMN IT.

Srsly, XP is a massive pro, I cant work effectively on vista, call me an idiot, but It will take me forever to get used to Vista, so it is acceptable, but XP support (I dont need it coming with the laptop, so long as i can install it myself), is a huge pro.

Unfortunately for you, installing XP on current laptops these days is pretty much a crapshoot when it comes to drivers. In short, many laptop manufacturers have Vista only drivers, no XP drivers available.

Fine, I can accept vista, though I wont like it.

Maybe a Lenovo T61 will do you well, they are fairly popular for being business class notebooks that are very durable. Get the 14.1" screen with maybe a 9 cell battery and that should do you good for an entire day of lectures. The T61's aren't meant for gaming but that shouldn't be a problem for you.

As far as the hard drive goes, Lenovo's largest hard drive upgrade seems to be 250GB for an additional $100 which is close to the same price as Newegg's drives. So you can either upgrade through Lenovo or wait for some kind of laptop hard drive sale for a bigger drive. Or if you don't mind, just get an external enclosure and buy yourself a 1TB drive.

250gb Is more than enough of portable space (When I mentioned hard drive space, I just meant more than 40gb ;) ), 3TB of storage on the Desktop is way more than enough permanent storage, I'll check out the t61, thanks.

Also, Lenovos seem fairly pricey but if you can find a coupon that should knock of maybe 400-500 dollars
