EVGA: Now it's getting silly

Personally, I don't mind the different overclocked editions. I ordered a GTX 280 FTW from TigerDirect (my rationale: if I'm already dropping $650 on a video card, an extra $50 for a decent manufacturer overclock isn't a huge deal). I just don't yet feel comfortable overclocking my GPU myself; the only thing that I've ever kept overclocked is my G0 stepping Q6600 (a.k.a. the "25% Overclocking for Dummies" edition).

Yeah I will probably step up into one of these when my GX2 step-up comes close to it's end, mmmm :p

EVGA will not allow you to step up to an overclocked edition. You will need to step up to the EVGA GTX 280 "PV" Edition

Correct, EVGA has not allowed anyone to stepup to anything other than a reference clocked card since the 7900GT Superclocked, i believe. That was the last time evga allowed it. Now its almost always reference clocked for stepup with maybe an exception here or there but DEFINITELY not during launch. Usually later one once stock numbers are higher... but thats not really a policy or much of a chance.

thats why I like BFG... they don't have any issues with OC versions and such, so long as the card came out after feb 21st of this year I believe.

Oh well like someone on the EVGA forums said, I guess EVGA will get less money from me steping up to a normal GTX 280 :p

Well, whether or not you like factory-overclocked cards, I think it's cool that EVGA has all those versions of the 280. I have always done well with their vanilla cards and prefer to use Rivatuner, although lately I switched to EVGA Precision (love that Age Of Conan skin by DWood, that girl's hot:D)

In reality its all about allocations and how many cards they can allocate to retailers and to stepup. And the vanilla cards have alot more available for allocation which means that they make more sense to use for stepup since you will be able to fill more stepups.

Bah it's no big deal! :) I just got it so I have 90 days in which some kind of update or something will come along and if not oh well I have to Upgrayedd to a double dose of pimpin GTX 280. :D

I keep on hearing how people are not comfortable overclocking. I just don't understand what's so damn hard about it. It's a piece of cake. let's write some instructions:
1) Use a utility that allows overclocking, like RivaTuner, ATI Tool, or heck even nTune.
2) Increase the speed a bit then test for artifacts. Repeat until artifacts are found
3) decrease speed a bit.

It's pretty hard to screw this up. Just go gradually, and everything will be fine.

Well, unless they bin their GTX 280's for which edition they are selling, people can overclock the card themselves. If they _are_ binning them, that would suck. It will be interesting to see how that works out over the next two months. I'm sure we'll hear shouts of dismay if the stock clocked cards won't overclock well.

Either EVGA has seriously brain dead marketing department or there are too many rich kiddies with too much money to burn. I predict this one goes in the books as one of the stupidest marketing gimmicks the 3D scene has seen ever.

Seriously, FTW edition, what an embarasment

GTX 280 WTFLOL@YOUIMSOLEETROFLCAKE XXX Edition
You owe me a milkshake and a new keyboard. Maybe a new monitor too. OTFT

@bigdogchris: Sorry, but putting "FTW" in a motherboard name was never cool. Unless you are like 12 years old or something.

Just for giggles I went through the motions for a WTF. Not only is it $700, they're trying to charge $92 shipping for an overnighted 6 pound package via UPS. Even with a fuel surcharge the most they're paying is $15.

Overnight is more expensive than that regardless of weight. It should come to around $50 shipping for that method.

I like XFX for two reasons.

1) Their warranties own.
2) They make carfds on black PCB's.

Fucking epic

I like EVGA for two reasons ... make that 3 reasons....

1) Their warranties own.
2) They make cards on black PCB's.
3) Step Up for the win.

Fraking EPIC ..... good grief, EVGA also has a kick ass lifetime warranty on their highend cards and My 8800 GTX has a black PCB (gasp !!! )

Anyone see the one EVGA is putting out with a water block preinstalled? Clocked in at 694 or something. While I think EVGA could put out less editions, I have to admit this one is pretty sweet for the people who are going to be making the TRI-SLI watercooled loops. 15% overclock is pretty significant.

This is why EVGA created the Precision tuning utility to make overclocking easier for our customers.

FWIW Newegg charges $26 for the same shipment. $90 is not only robbery, it's insulting.

Is the utility worth a damn? I haven't used it yet.

Yeah, its pretty much riva but without all the clutter. It has profiles, temps, clock speeds, test and an FPS counter as well as GPU temps on screen as well as on G15 keyboards. I use it more than i did Riva and its much easier to adjust on the fly. Its less complicated but for some people they dont like using it. I personally think its fine if you wanna make quick adjustments. And some people are reporting better OCs. Ive been using it for months now and initially we had to work out some bugs before we released it to the public but it seems to be doing pretty well now.

Three models should have satisfied 99.9% of their customer base. A standard, factory OC and WC edition would have been more than sufficient.

Yeah I hate that crap two. All they really need is a stock and an overclocked model to keep me happy.

Seriously. I wish girlfriends came like that as well...

I think my girlfriend is stuck on overclocked mode...and I'm too tired...

I laughed at least 20 times reading this thread with all those new editions!!! Good stuff.

....you do the math.

The prices and the number of editions is pretty ridiculous, but with that said - its still cool the EVGA gives the option for some much. Their step-up program and warranty support is the reason I will always go with EVGA. Just drop those prices
