Help me pick a 24" Non-TN LCD

Hey guys,

I hate buying LCDs--I really do. It's discouraging that it's become so difficult to find a decent quality monitor. But that's a different thread.

Over the weekend I purchased a Gateway FHD2400 and immediately noticed the effects of the TN panel it used. I wont' bore you with the details, but I went through 2 of them, and wasn't happy with the side effects of the TN panel, the glossy coating, or the backlight bleeding. It's clear to me that I won't be happy with any monitor with a TN panel.

Here's my requirements/wishlist:
-24" non-TN panel (VA or IPS panel)
-1:1 pixel mapping (for playing the PS3 in 1080p with black bars at top and bottom)
-Around $500; $550 at the very most
-Preferrably an HDMI input

I've purchased a PS3, and will be using it with whichever monitor I end up with. I can't justify the purchase of an HDTV since our TV viewing is limited, so the 24" monitors seem to be the way to go.

From what research I've gathered so far, the Westinghouse L2410NM seems like a good possibility. It seems prone to failure though, and since I can't find it locally, I'm not sure what my options for an extended warranty would be.

Are there any other possibilities that meet my criteria? Normally I love electronics/gadget shopping, but this has become one that I absolutely hate. It sucks to be OCD. :)

Thanks for the help guys, this is forum is hands-down the best resource for this sort of thing on the web.

I have last years version, and it had a great panel. The new one has HDMI, and similar specs, I'd need to read a review to see how it compares, price is around the same however.

This monitor has noted as being tops in lag(even slow as molasses next to the 2407WFP-HC) and not suited for gaming, be that console or PC.

I'd suggest the benQ FP241VW. Big ugly stand that make it hard to fit on a small desk, but has both DVI and HDMI and respectable panel performance. Still alittle slow, but I'm guessing he'd want more than one digital input.

Actually, more than one digital input isn't a necessity. I've got a nice HDMI switch that I've used in the past that works very well.

However, both of those monitors break my budget. Plus, I've had some very bad experiences with Dell monitors in the past and I've tended to stay away from them lately.

Well, the Westy is good for you, ignoring the obvious concerns.

The only other near flawless monitor I can think of that can be had for under would be the L245/L256WP (no real differences). Excellent picture quality and plays well with consoles over HDMI 1080p. Absolutely love the black levels dungeon diving in Oblivion and playing Assassins Creed. However these are not easy to get under $500 anymore.

The only other great P-MVA I can think of (Soyo DYLM24D6) can be had for $300 easily at officemax. But it does not play well with consoles (will stretch 1080p to 1920x1200).

Otherwise its TN time if your not willing to drop atleast $600 :(

I have two 24" SOYO's and they rule! I got them for $280.00 each at officemax. You need to make sure the box says 6ms (not 3ms) or else it will be the TN version. The stand completely blow on this, plan on buying an aftermarket stand if you want to tilt or swivel the monitor. Otherwise it's the best deal going.

So the 24" Soyo's are good for gaming? I thought P-MVA's had high amounts of input lag/ghosting.

Another long story, but I had one of those LG L245WP for a while, and regret ever parting with it. It really was a great monitor. When I started this search, my original intent was to find another one of those, but I couldn't remember the model number. I've found one for $585. I liked that monitor so much, I might just have to go for it... Are the LG L245WP and LG L245WP-BN the same thing?

How are you managing the issues it has with consoles? Is the stretching that noticeable? I think that might drive me crazy too.

I have the LG L246WP and absolutely love it. I got a great deal at Circuit City but I doubt you'd be able to find one there anymore. I believe Newegg has them for around $550.

the BenQ, LG, and Westinghouse are all MVA panels.

Concerning the ones listed in this thread:

In input lag speed:

1) LG - 1.5 frames lag
2) BenQ - 2 frames lag
3) Westinghouse L2410NM - 2.5 frames lag

With the FP241VW I cannot subjectively feel lag or see it next to my BenQ G2400W (TN, no input lag). I did not have the LG long enough, but the mouse seemed very fast on it. With the Westinghouse I could feel the lag, but it was not horrible.

If you can get the LG, I would recommend it. It is the same nice panel as the FP241W/VW with faster electronics and fewer issues due to fewer connectors. The BenQ can have issues switching from DVI to HDMI when an ATI HD 3800 series card is on DVI. There is a work around but it is not 100%. With nVidia, no such issue.

The Soyo would be ok, but don't expect much over a panel, OSD, Case and crappy stand and it will not work well with the PS3 as it will stretch and not give any 1:1 pixel mapping with it...

The others work flawlessly with the PS3. I've used an HDMI switch with the BenQ and Westy and it worked very well here too.

Looks like they have them for $599. I love NewEgg, and they've got a pretty good return policy. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and spend the extra.

EDIT:
10e, the BenQ you mention at the top of your post with the 2 frames of lag is the FP241VW you compared to your TN panel display, right?

EDIT2:
Well crap, I thought NewEgg had a good return policy. Their LCD policy sucks. Anyone had any dealings with returns of LCDs with NewEgg. Do they stick by their guns on this policy?

Yes,

The FP241VW is almost always 1 or 2 frames behind the G2400W. But having them in clone mode I cannot perceive any lag with the FP241VW. With the NEC 2690 I have sitting in clone mode with the G2400W I can see a tiny bit if I am looking for it, as I can with the Westinghouse L2410NM

Many here have complained that NewEgg's monitor policy is not good, especially in regards to dead pixels. You may still be able to return a monitor from there, but not for that reason. It would have to be something else like excessive backlight bleed or wonky electronics.

Cool, thanks for the clarification. One more question before I pull the trigger:

I've found an LG L246WP for $585. They also have the L245WP for the same price. Is there any reason to go with one over the other? Best I can tell from TFTCentral, they both use the same panel.

yep, same panel and same monitor.. the only physical difference is the blue power light, nothing else beyond that. The chances could be higher that you will get a fresher L245 than L246, but thats it.

Oops, yeah, I found that out by reading the L246 thread after I posted. I meant to update my original post.

Thanks for your help though. I pulled the trigger, and ordered one earlier today. Hopefully it will ship out today and I'll have it by early next week. Here's hoping for no dead/stuck pixels! :)

EDIT:
And it's already shipped--and it'll be here Friday, before the weekend. Very cool.

It's here...and it's perfect!! After looking at this screen, I don't know how I ever made it as long as I did on a TN panel. I'm vowing right here and now to never even consider the purchase of any LCD panel that uses TN film. The difference in quality is amazing.

I love my LG. Sorry I ever left you buddy. :p

Grats on the new LCD, glad you're enjoying it. Do you do any gaming on it?

Congrats, Pcguru83. I actually had tried two TN panels before I bought my L246WP. It's a great monitor for sure. I'm glad you were able to score one.
