Well, I did it, I spent all the money that I should never have spent! But boy will it be sweet. Here's what I got coming:

Supermicro SuperChassis 743T-645B
Areca ARC-1220
1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 x2
250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2
ASUS M3A78-EMH

Netgear Prosafe GS724T 24 Port Gigabit Smart Switch
24-port Cat6 Patch Panel
TrippLite PDU1215 1U PDU
6U Wallmount Bracket for 19" Rack Equipment

All said and done, I'm looking at about a $2000 credit card bill :(

I know it's not much in the face of many of the amazing setups some people have here, but I'm absolutely stoked. :D

Yup, for at home.

As for the work log, I may just do that ;) . Lot's of the parts will likely be coming sporadically, so I should have time to post.

new work logs are always interesting. i decided to go down the virtualisation route for my lab so there isn't much to show visually whereas in reality i have a shedload of stuff running - it's all just inside one black box under the table!

atomiser,
what software are you using to do your virtualization stuff? Im thinking about doing the same for my development needs. I wanna be able to run different versions of windows from the same box, all at the same time...and be able to connect to each OS via remote desktop.

I looked at VMware's website and they have so many different flavors of their software that im so confused.

Free: VMware server
Free: Microsoft Virtual PC

Not free: VMware Workstation

For what you describe, you want one of those three.

yeah im just using the free vmware server on a windows host, works a treat. got an e4500 core2duo with 4 gigs of ram and a couple of hard drives - one for the o/s and another for the vmware guests to run from. considering upgrading it to a quad and 8 gigs of ram with an additional hard drive to further enhance performance.

Very cool...Do you have any experience with the Tripp Lite PDU? I ask because I'm in the market for a PDU and was going to go with APC but if you can tell me a little about the Tripp Lite I would appreciate it.

This was the APC I was looking at.

If that's the PDU you're looking at from APC, the Tripplite (at least the one I'm getting) can't compare. Those APC ones are pretty sweet. We've got the much larger, vertical brother of those at work. They're switched, they tell you how many amps you're pulling, they are networkable, basically they kick ass. The one I bought is just a dumb one. I simply bought it for nicer cable management.

But yeah, no experience with Tripplite myself, so not much else I can say.

I just setup a Supermicro machine with that XenServer Express, pretty easy install and the VM's are working great.

Limited to 4 VM's though on the Xen Express

Wow, I can't wait to setup something like this when I get a house.

Gotta ask... Whats the total damage money wise?

Hmm, I think I'll just use the Worklogs forum under Cases & Case Modding. That's where Ockie did his for Galaxy x.x. Afterward I'll post the completed network portion in the gallery.
