That was fast! Just a few short hours ago the 9 ASUS Eee PC was only a rumor. Fast forward to this afternoon and Engadget has pictures of the new mini-laptop from ASUS.

The 9-inch Eee will hit in the "middle" of 2008
They've just priced it right out of its own market segment.
You guys do realize that the posted price was Pounds? That's $800 US. I don't care how much I like the screen, forget it. The ONLY things they need to be adding are the 9" screen and the slowest model of Intel Atom processor. Just those. Keep the price DOWN ASUS!
I'm surprised there haven't been any "nine incher" jokes yet. Talk about extensions

Show me another laptop with those dimensions under $1000.They've just priced it right out of its own market segment.
If they can manage to price that thing for <$399 for the 12 gig version, I'm sold. The camera seems to be a bit of a waste of time but...meh. Only thing I don't care for (it's trifling but..) is the white color. It might yellow over time. Coffee stains and dirty hands will bugger that clean white fast.
399 pounds. I hope that's not the US price.
$500 would be my limit for that thing.

ASUS tells us the screen is 1024 x 600, and it looks to be almost the exact same pixel density as the 7-inch version. The computer was being shown in both Linux and Windows XP versions, so it looks like you'll be able to have your choice of OS when the 9-incher is released later this year.
The problem is this, at $250-$300 you satisfy a whole niche of low-end needs with a "commodity" product. This is where it has its advantage, price point.
At $400 you enter the relm of Full featured Laptops that do everything functionally the Eee does and a whole lot more with 14"+ screens and the whole nine yards. The only thing it has going for it in this segment is size, and the performance hit here starts to open up a gap that makes it a tough sell.
I would agree with that.

If you're looking for a sub $500 laptop to work on and surf the web, laptops like the Toshiba trump the Eee.
A better price point for the Eee might be <$200 if laptops like the Toshiba are it's competition.
