Dell to stop offering AMD based systems?

It's probably more of a business decision. If they aren't selling online, why should they continue to offer them?

As the article says, the Dell AMD systems will still be available at retail.

Wrong.

Engadget doesn't have a clue in researching period.

From the frontpage of AMDzone.com:

"Dell Stops Selling AMD Powered Machines Online?

Engadget says that Dell has stopped selling AMD powered computers online. They are only available in retail. Whoops. Engadget is good at turning off TVs, but not at any form of research. If all you do is post product pictures with two sentences I guess research isn't necessary often.

Inspiron 531
Optiplex 740
Vostro 1000
Latitude D531
Poweredge T105
Poweredge 6950
Poweredge 2970
Poweredge SC1435
Poweredge M605

Ok, so you can only buy 9 AMD powered computers online. Desktops, laptops, and servers."

Sad to see Dailytech parrot FUD from another site, especially who doesn't even bother to do their reporting homework...

Apparently you didn't read the Dailytech article like this excerpt:

Dell appears to be in the process of removing AMD-powered machines from its website. Although machines like the Latitude D531, Vostro 1000, and Optiplex 740 are still currently available online, Dell put this cautionary note at the top of the search page for anyone looking for an AMD system:

Shop for Dell computers with AMD processors in retail stores. See our retail partners for details.

Computers with AMD processors are not available online.

Apparently you didn't read the Dailytech article like this excerpt:

Still, doesn't give any excuse for some site's sloppy reporting. Welp, as long as they are still available retail, Dell not selling AMD based systems online is a moot point. Personally it doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever,(what does it cost to sell online vs. in a retail store, surely it's cheaper to ax the retail and strictly sell online) but hey, there's Dell for ya.

They have since updated the article. They got in contact with Dell, and all of that info was apparently wrong. The AMD machines will still be sold, and that little blurb about buying them in stores has been removed.

Updated 2/8/2008
We recently spoke with a Dell representative Anne Camden who wished to clarify the recent happenings on Dell's website. First of all, Dell has since removed the "Computers with AMD processors with AMD processors are not available online" disclaimer from its website. Whether this was a slip-up on Dell's part remains to be seen.

Secondly, Dell Latitude, Vostro and Optiplex systems using AMD processors will continue to be made available on Dell's website.

Finally, AMD-based Inspiron notebooks will no longer be offered on Dell.com. Only the Energy Star 4.0 Inspiron 531 desktop lives on through Dell.com. Inspiron notebooks and the rest of the Inspiron desktop family will only be available from retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Staples.

Wow, a bit touchy there Lou? I just went through the desktop menus for all 3 sections of the Dell site and there is only a single AMD desktop model left. Like it or not, it does appear that Dell is dumping AMD online as reported.

edit: If anything, the notice might have been premature. Typing in e-value codes (or used saved links which are based on e-value codes) can probably bring up more models.

Wow, a bit touchy there Lou?

Sorry, I'm allergic to bullshit.

There are more models/options left in laptops and servers on their site, if you bothered to check AMDzone's blurb about it, they hunted down all the models that were still shown on the site at the time of their posting. Like I said, sloppy reporting on Engadget's part and every other news site takes the ball and runs with it without question. Pathetic.

It looks more like:

:D

More like someone's trying and failing to be funny. I don't/didn't have to do the research in this matter, far more qualified people have already done the job, like Chris Tom at AMDzone.

Nope, I didn't fail. With your help, I was funny.

Nope, I didn't fail. With your help, I was funny.

Sure buddy, you keep saying that to yourself... If it makes you feel better in the morning, knock yourself out.

Getting back on topic, my main beef with this story itself gentlemen is not so much Dell itself, personally I could care less about Dell, I know I'll never own one, even if it had an AMD processor in it. I don't really care too much for propeitary parts in my computers...

The issue I have(and Chris Tom as well in that regard) is with this crummy reporting of supposed tech sites like Engadget and the damning thing of other sites that pick up on the same exact story without question, whether it's accurate or not. Thankfully they actually corrected their story, but this isn't the first time something like this has happened. And the even more pathetic thing about it is if it's about AMD, most of the time it's not even questioned if it's negative, it basically takes an AMD rep to step in and set the record straight before it's even bothered to be corrected on said sites. Who only knows the havok it wreaks on their stock prices.(it's already dropped a quarter in response to this story at the time of this posting)

Perhaps some of you could care less or don't have the scruples to admit that, but at least myself and some other folks are not blind to it. For the rest of you, believe whatever you like, nothing I say will change your mind.

AMD share price reached $8 last friday, then the Phenom delay rumour came out, now this

You know what I don't get? Why scale back? If I were an OEM, I'd want to sell both to make more money.

This is a stupid move on Dell's part. They should put them all on the website...make everything you have readily available for sale.

Why stock something that doesn't sell?

Why split the resources into a product line that doesn't sell? Doesn't make sense at all, having them focus the resources onto a product line that sells = smart. Clarior, you fail.

So the cheaper AMD Dell's aren't selling at all? I find that hard to believe.

Also-stop being a smartass about it-I'm just throwing my two cents in.

Perhaps Anne Camden is speaking from the wrong end of the horse. A cursory search finds AMD systems currently for sale on Dell's site.

What's Going on with Dell and AMD? Fri. Feb. 08, 2008

Many folks have seen the post on Engadget about changes in Dell's AMD offerings online. Here's the deal.

Dell regularly adjusts its product offerings, and how customers can purchase those products. Currently the majority of our Inspiron AMD-based systems are available through our retail partners such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Staples, and through telephone sales. Our AMD-based energy-efficient consumer desktop, the Energy Star 4.0 Inspiron 531 is also still available on Dell.com.

Dell also sells a full range of AMD-powered business notebooks, desktops and servers online. Certain product ranges or models may only be available through specific channels such as retail or phone. We are committed to the AMD product lines as a long-term partner to provide the maximum choice for our customers.

Fixed. "full" was crossed out in Lionel Menchaca's blog post.

I checked earlier through the 3 front pages, and as Dell stated only one AMD desktop model was still available in the desktop sections. Face it, it's true.

There were AMD desktops and laptops throughout the site a couple of weeks ago and now most are gone. :p

BTW, don't change the subject. The word "consumer" is explicitly used twice in the quote I posted above. Not that it makes it any better since there's only a single business AMD desktop model on the site now.

Scrambling quicker than Tom Brady. A story never has to be completely true, that's what addendums are for.

I found it kinda pointless, I priced out a AMD Dell once and it was almost $300 to upgrade a 3500 to a 5000+.

I dont think they were really trying to push them out the door.

After dell blackballed AMD for years (due to intel arm-twisting many whisper), do you think AMD was going to cut Dull great deals on the processors? I wouldn't if I were them.

Sure they would. Dell is big enough that they want to work with them.

work w/ them, yes. cut them GREAT deals on cpu's? I wouldn't, but also I'm not AMD, so who knows.

The first quarter has been especially rough for everyone. Notwithstanding, it seems as though AMD has righted itself quicker than most had expected.

Qualification for VMware Virtualization now Completed; 13 Global OEM Platforms now Shipping

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AMD (NYSE: AMD - News) today announced that Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL - News) is now offering five server platforms based on high-performance, energy-efficient Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors. This news follows last week’s announcement that Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors are generally available, and brings the number of available global OEM platforms based on the new processors to 13. Additionally, AMD is announcing today that VMware has completed qualification of Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors for use in VMware ESX and ESXi hypervisor deployments, enabling customers to leverage the latest in VMware virtualization on these server systems.

“Dell is delivering on its vision to simplify IT by providing customers with a seamless and simple upgrade path to Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors on PowerEdge servers,” said Brad Anderson, senior vice president, Dell Business Product Group. “The combination of AMD’s most advanced processors running on Dell PowerEdge servers provides an optimal balance of performance and energy efficiency across a variety of customer solutions, from general purpose and remote office to high-performance compute clusters and virtualized data center environments.”

“As Dell expands its AMD Opteron processor-based server portfolio, we continue our strong collaboration to reduce IT complexity and delivering world-class performance-per-watt,” said Randy Allen, corporate vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation Division, AMD. “These latest Dell platforms based on Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, in combination with VMware’s qualification, are important milestones for business customers looking for an ideal platform for virtualization.”

Hooray, low end quad core Opteron servers only 7 months late! :p

Also Dell just announced that they WILL be selling AMD Opteron Quad Servers.
So no they are not stopping selling AMD, at least not at the moment.

The story was that Dell was cutting back on *consumer* systems (desktops/laptops), shifting sales to retail instead of direct, and Dell confirmed it a couple of months ago.

I don't know where the rest is coming from. It's like no one has even bothered to read the pages linked. No one claimed Dell was going to stop selling AMD servers, even if the number of models is pretty small compared to the Intel offerings.

work w/ them, yes. cut them GREAT deals on cpu's? I wouldn't, but also I'm not AMD, so who knows.
Yes, let's alienate a potential market by overcharging out of pure spite. That's sure to improve our profits!

I was going to sell you a bridget in Brooklyn if you really believed that, but I despise you so much that I've decided I don't need the money. :p

WHAT DOES THE THREAD TITLE SAY? I believe there was room for the word CONSUMER

I think you're a little confused. I didn't start the thread as is pretty obvious by looking at the first post.

There is very little content in the first post and clicking the link would give you a fairly accurate title: "Dell to Stop Selling AMD-based Inspirons Online." If clicking on a link to the story is too hard, the actual availability of AMD models and subsequent confirmation by Dell was posted in this thread.

Just to repeat, which of my threads were you pointing out?
POPEGOLD said:
guess you would have to say that now....SO much for your thread huh?

I don't see the point in getting angry at me because AMD couldn't supply Dell with processors. Look at Dell's statement of "limiting exposure" to AMD in context of AMD trying to woo back channel partners after pulling basically the same stunt on them.
