Possible [H]ot Deals: CompUSA store closings (Part 2)

I just got back from my local store in Jacksonville Florida.

the masses are out there and Christmas shopping.buying these still over priced items.
spoke with a guy behind the counter at tech desk, say the real markdowns wont happen till after christmas.

right now its the same :(
10% off Video,hard drives,motherboards,games,software
20% of cpus,cases

But there is less of everything to be found.
I'm going to keep checking every 2 days till after Christmas, its only 5mile away

hope this saves someone the trip

I am not sure if anyone have thought about this. Think of the time and gas you waste on going back and forth to CU. Would you really be saving any or much money? The items that might be worth buying probably have been bought already. Do you really want to buy the item that is discounted or just because it is discounted you want to buy it? I have not gone to my CU yet and when I do, probably after xmas or next year, I would not be expecting to find something I really want.

I dont make the trip just to check out prices with gas at $3/gallon. I just stopped by this afternoon because I need to pick up some stuff in that area. Not worth my time to just stop by and check the prices...

They have E4400 for $150 with 20% discount. 8800 GTX for $600 with 10% discount. Yay...what a great deal :D

I headed over there today. I about fell over! They had 30% off of cables like phone cord and RCA cables! Holy Sh*T!!

J/k -- Looks like the same sale accept that games at the Augusta, GA store were 20% off. Nothing to go crazy about but I did find few titles that were cheap found some nice places for them so I can get the 50% off you know.

Books were now 30% so I saw a few titles that may be worth buying. Some coding books, Unix stuff. 10% of everything else and some other lamo deals. The store really looked the same. It didn't look like much moved. They have some Bose headphones for $99 that may go down quite a bit after Christmas. The same amount of Call of Duty 4 and Crysis games on the endcap hardly moved at all.

man, I went by my CUS tonight, and they have a bunch of their high end TVs marked down 10-23% off. There's this 32in Sharp Aquos 720 for around 800 from 1000.... so tempting.... but no money =(

--Vectra - LE-- I meant to say that I want the percentage to go up to 30% + by the day after Christmas but we'll see. I may swing by there tonight just to see how ravaged the store in Augusta, GA is.

I'd wager its in pretty good shape ;)

The store still looks full and that nothing has really moved at all here in Augusta, GA. Basically they still have a lot of inventory.

They have the 30% off signs all posted and I couldn't believe it.... 30% off telephone cables, RCA cables, and books. Holy Sh*t!! That's a deal. In all seriousness they had pc games with 20% off. Some of $19.99 games may be worth getting. They are a few years old.

Nothing great really happening. I did get a few books that seemed interesting. I'm waiting to pick up the Media (DVDs / Cds etc) for 40% off. They have some Bose headphones for $100 but it's not worth paying that amount right now. Maybe a webcam will be nice but not at their prices.

Went yesterday to the CUSA here in Miami to look for Office supplies (of course they don't carry any of it!) and they still looked to be well stocked. Many a signs with 10% to 30% but only they know which products carry that 30% as all I saw were 5% on computers and big ticket items.

Saw a lowly BFG 8800GTS 620MB with a $149.99 price on the rack but it was for something else (how nice!) so I stood in line wating for a price check and the fine young man tells me that the price is $400.00, he must of have seen my reaction and he quickly jumps ahead of me and tells me... wait for it... oh but sir, you get a 10% off of that! I said Thanks to him and walked away :D

I did saw a cool case (couldn't see a brand) for about $87.00, big fan protruding from the front and a HUGE fan on the side of the case, black color. didn't want to waste an hour so I left.

Only two more days to go and I'll comeback Tuesday or Wednesday to see what they got going. I really feel that I'm going to be able to spend some money on this even if it is to upgrade for a fraction of the normal price and sell the rest for a little profit.

Went to the one in des moines last night. They had 10,20,30,40% off sgins everywhere but the prices where still crap for the most part and they where packed.

Saw a couple OK deals but nothing really worth buying. My sis in law got Children of men on DVD for $7 best deal i saw in the store really.

I should go put a big sign that says "broken, do not sell" or something along the lines of that on some sort of 60" plasma and then buy it in a month for $100.

im pretty sure compusa will have like 40% off on their last week since they are selling nothing right now with their sales for overpriced items. hope so cause i wanna snatch a decent graphics card.

Just got me a pair of 500GB SATA WD retail boxed for $87.99 ea, and a XBOX 360 Arcade for 223.99 to give as a gift. While I was there, I talked to the liquidator guy, Same guy who closed another down nearby 6 months ago, so I already knew him. I got a Little Giant 22-1A ladder (about $350-500 most anywhere) for $75. If all the stores have them, get them cheap. They are great ladders. (Talked him down from $100)

Real people know how to hunt bargains, Idiots are the ones looking for something already 40% off at Walmart (CRISIS for example) and wonder why a store 20% off isn't that cheap yet.

The CompUSA here in Tucson still had a TON of stock left. The lines at the 3 registers had NO waiting. There were lots of foot traffic, but no one buying anything. All the shelves still had a ton of stock.

Walking around, most people had in their hands, printer paper and ink cartridges.

Funny, I went to the Best Buy just down the street afterwards, 5-10 minutes to just checkout at the register, and they are NOT haveing a "out of business sale".

went to buy a router for my father, hoping they'd be cheap. NOTHING was cheap, even with the discounts. $70 for a linksys router i can get from newegg for $50 shipped? No thanks.

Buy.com had a WD My Book 500GB ext. hard drive for $90 a few days ago. What was the price with discount at CompUSA? around $150. Of course, I have to say this. There's a lot of people who don't know any better. There were a ton of people walking out of the store with hard drives, TV's, laptops. Meh....poor suckers. They were paying more than online retail prices.

I mentioned something to a friend of mine i was with about how horrible the prices were even with the close out discounts and one of the workers overheard me. He suggested I double check my prices I was comparing. What a dope.

I just looked at their prices here in SF, CA. Inventory prices are horrible. Miracle that CUSA managed to stay open this long.

Went into Salem NH store yesterday, nothng in the way of decent sales. Still a bunch of Q6600's but I dont know what stepping they are... $250 with the discount, but NewEgg has the good stepping for $254, so no bargain here.

The good LCD's were all gone.... not sold, just moved out. I think the auction company sent the real Ebay-able stuff off for processing, so no LCD lottery going to be hapnin here.

They moved IN pallets of crap, cheap chinese junk cases and stuff with sale signs like its a bargain when in reality its garbage at 2x cost. They really do think people are the walking dead.

They hired the homeless, with goofs walking the area with big signs...

"up to 40% OFF selected items"

That selected item being keychains with picture fobs on them!!!!!:rolleyes::D

I noticed the same thing last week, i was asking about their unlocked phones and the clerk told me he didn't know what happened, but they were all gone

I went to the CU in Mt. Laurel, NJ on Fri. since I was in the area. I had fond memories of that store before I moved to TX and figured I'd make one less stop before they close for good while I was in NJ for the holidays.

They had 10-30% off sales for most items. No good/great deals to be found, as others have already stated. I was looking for a UPS and high capacity microSD card. The UPS was a rip off - I don't remember the price off hand, but it was bad. The 2 GB microSD card was $60 - I paid $20'ish back in the summer! And a 2 GB USB thumb drive was $30 - the 4 GB version sold for under $40 on Black Fri. elsewhere!

Also, they were selling store parts, like shelves, etc. But what cracked me up was a sign that said, "Due to circumstances, a 10% buyer's premium will be assessed to sales" for those items. WTF?! LOL

I took some pics of the store and will post them here once I return to my residence in TX.

I just got back from the store in Wilmington, DE. Same story ... 30% signs, everything 5-10% off, nobody buying anything, lots of paper, blank discs and ink, etc. The only reasonable deals were 5000+ BE and 6000+ cpus for 20% off and motherboards for 10% off. Everything else was WAY over priced even with the discounts. This store wasn't that great anyway, glad to see them go out of business. Maybe we'll get a Fry's in the area (or better).

Went to the CompUSA in Woodland Hills yesterday, and there were no good deals.....because I didn't notice the store closed down last year...and felt like an idiot.

HAHAHAHAHAHA... yeah, I know a few people that's happened to. We had two stores in the Vegas area, one closed in Henderson earlier this year but people never even knew it. I might pop in to the Vegas store after Christmas for a few good laughs. It's sad to see them go, really, but it's their own fault: they never seemed to realize you can't charge people ridiculously high prices for stuff forever. Sooner or later competition will drive you - meaning them - clear out of business if you're not paying attention.

I've never found a good/great deal on anything at CompUSA except a recent sale of TDK DVD+R 100 pack spindles for $23.99. I'm hoping to get lucky and snag another one cheap before the store just up and vanishes like a fart in the wind, but I doubt it'll happen. Ridiculous prices on used, opened, returned, refurbished, and other types of hardware.

Hell, I remember the last time I actually did go into the Vegas one and saw the "Clearance" table up near the front entrance. They had some model of an HP 17" LCD, the bezel had damage to it, the screen itself had scuff marks, it was triple wrapped in clear packing tape (even across the LCD panel!) and the pins on the VGA connector were bent - they had it marked for $379... and that's supposed to be a CLEARANCE ITEM!!!

Now that I think about it, I'm not so sad to see 'em go... good riddance, you overpriced pricks.

just got back from the one in San Francisco, picked up a 5000 BE for $130 OTD. not a great deal, but not bad either. now i gotta find an asus m3a on sale...

they had two in stock, but i didnt ask about the 6400BE

Yep, they use bum advertising for most of their outside advertising. At the store I worked at some of the guys came in smelling of cheap booze and had ripped and worn clothing.

I think some of the merchandise is being shifted around to different stores as well. I was talking to one of the employees at the local CU and he mentioned that some merchandise was being moved to the Huntsville store. I know that happened with the last round of closings as well, so it does not really surprise me.

Ok, went by both Compusa in Nashville, TN - (100 Oaks / Cool Springs) The liquidators had even RAISED the prices of the open box display computers back up to around 5% off.

I did get a decent deal (needed a laptop fast - old one died and needed it for work) got a Compaq F730us for $429.99, at the 100 Oaks location. Dual core Athlon, gig ram, nvidia 6100 graphics, and 120gb hard drive. Not bad, considering the same laptop was around 600+ still at circuit chitty - they sold 30 yesterday alone. All gone now.

Crummy they did this at Christmas - all these people loosing their jobs in a tough economy.

Basically, the uninformed is buying at the 5%...

Stopped by the Tampa store and it was a joke. Saw several people buying the 900 case for 119.99 on sale yet you can get it 59.99 online right now and others picking up the CM 830 for 199.99 on sale when it is 99.99 or so with free shipping online.

Like I said in an earlier post in this thread, consumers will show up, see the "STORE CLOSING" signs, see the announced discounts and buy stuff like it's going out of style regardless of whether it's a good deal or not. The perception they're getting a good deal is all that matters to the liquidators. Sad, really, but that's what happens...

Got into a fight with a manager today. 16GB Sandisk Extreme III CF Card: shelf tag reads $299, but actual item has a separate tag (with correct SKU) for $99. Ended up leaving empty-handed, but with his name. Will definitely file a BBB complaint against Gordon Brothers.

Side-note:
Can any of you help me find state laws pertaining to them honoring an incorrect price sticker?

Good Luck with that but do let us know what happened

You're wasting your time. BBB complaints are about as effective as a fart in the wind and do nothing. The company (Gordon Brothers) more than likely isn't based in your area, sooo... this will just get worse for no good reason.

But whatever squeaks your sneakers...

See, this is what i love about living in CT, our AG loves taking cases like this if there is any hint of there being a way they can claim a pattern of actions like this. Look at the current BB action in regards to their intranet site vs their internet site

I agree on your comment about the BBB. I filed 2 BBB claims last year for something unlreated to CompUSA and neither provided any resolution from the respective business.

I dropped by to have a good laugh today and there were more people in Compusa in Newport News than any other day of the year (other than Black Friday). I walked around for a few minutes and had a few good laughs then left. I did see a Phenom 9500 for ~$234, which is probably about right.

im not too saddened to see them go... even in death they are trying to screw everyone...

the compusa down here in miami was even empty black friday while every BB was packed beyond belief...

For what? Prices that didn't drop after Christmas? No thanks... I'll go to Fry's and grab a 320GB drive for $44, thanks. :p

**Update***

I went to my local store in Jax,Fl when they opened at 10am.

AND.......

Next to nothing changed. :(
Same markdowns with a few small changes. 15% on high end video cards and software, Not only making them 10-20% more then online.
Gone were all Quads,Raptors,Lcd's over 22" which were all still over priced.

The masses are sucking this stuff up but still tons of stuff there, But i need better discounts before im going to bite.

I hope this saves someone the trip today.
