Nicolaskl, on the B&W's... is the yellow material kevlar? Because it looks like kevlar with a rifle bullet sticking in it... That's one rugged looking speaker nonetheless. Not really sure why I am making this comment... just trying to stay active in the forums I guess...lol. I know, I'm pathetic :(

Well... later guys.

P.S. I promise next time I post I'll have something useful to say :D

I think the Infinity next to it is probably actually the more "rugged speaker." You could probably fire a 9mm point blank into the cast aluminum housing and not penetrate it. The ceramic metal matrix diaphragm driver (CMMD) is probably pretty tough also, although it's not like I spend a lot of time poking at it to test it out. The CMMD driver is made by taking aluminum and then anodizing both sides of it it to a specified thickness, which I guess makes a driver that is very rigid and low mass, which is exactly what you want from a driver.

I think the Intermezzo series may be one of the biggest bargains in the used audio world right now. I think because its slightly overshadowed by the Infinity Preludes. I think audio perfectionists shy away from buying the "midrange" infinity speaker when they could buy the pinnacle, the Prelude. Because of that it seems like the Intermezzo costs about 50% less on the used market even though it probably only cost 20% less when it was new.

The bottom line is that you can get the 2.6 (MSRP of 1500-2000 (depending on whether or not they have the built in amp)) for about 500-600 used, and the 4.1t (MSRP of 7000) for about 1500 used.

The B&Ws are certainly good speakers though, and they're for sale. :D Trying to sell them locally though. I know I could get more on eBay for them but I don't have the OG boxes and I don't want to hassle with packaging them for shipping. Resale is one of the great things about B&Ws. I think I paid 1350 new for them new, including taxes, and based of eBay prices if I wanted to split them up and ship them I could probably sell the 5 speakers for $1000. Definitely $900. 450 bucks for 4 years worth of audio enjoyment is pretty goddamn cheap. I wouldn't buy new ones thought, for new speakers in that price range I think Internet Direct is the way to go. I compared my 602s to a buddies Axioms (which I told him to get) and I think the Axioms absolutely dominated the B&Ws. They sounded so much fuller I thought something was actually wrong with my B&Ws.

I found a guy selling the Intermezzo center (can't remember if I mentioned it before, but supposedly it's a pretty solid center, built in amp and it's a 3 way like the towers). He's selling them with another set of towers though and said to call him back in a week or two and he'd decide whether he'd separate. He tried to sell me on buying all three speakers and then running 7.1, but personally I think 7.1 is a little unnecessary right now and spending an additional 1500 bucks on top of what I've already spent a lot unnecessary.

the humble setup.

haha.. the beeer can was supposed to be as a joke. I had a part the night before and the can was lying there.

The bookshelf's are connected to the 5.1 ultra sub. They actually sounds pretty good, obviously they are underpowered but good enough for my small room.

The keyboard is alright for gaming, the keys are stuff and there is pretty much no feedback. Some people would hate this keyboard but I use a macbook and I am used to that keyboard so this works out pretty well.

I've been considering doing this with my Logitech sub. I wonder if it would distort the sound (using the z-2300 2.1 sub).

I would check whether the Logitech sats are 8ohms before you go pluggint your bookshelf speakers into the sub. If it's only designed to push 4ohms & you attach 8ohm speakers, you could do some damage.

On a quick google search the z-2300 sats are 8 ohms (whereas the x-540 sats are 4 ohms).

Isn't the crossover frequency inappropriate for bookshelf speakers? When I connected some bookshelves to my Z-5500's amplifier, very little midrange, let alone mid-base, was sent to them as only small satellites were intended to be connected. Does the same happen with your setup?

I think you might be right. I have to look into it more. I don't think the Klipsch sub/amp is fully powering the speakers. Its sending majority of the low sounds through the sub. Even thought the speakers are full range The amp might have a cutt off for lower frequencies, I am not sure how to check. I might have to put it through a oscilloscope to find that out. Now that I am curious I might do some tests.

BTW the table is something i found at my parents garage. Looks pretty decent, I need to find a way to raise it since it had wheels before.

Can someone please tell me if it's even worth upgrading from this...
Pioneer SX-780 receiver (400watt total output - 100 watts per speaker)
2x Yamaha 150 watt speakers

Hooked up to my 24bit Soundmax soundcard.

I would like to have some thundering bass, currently I can't really achieve that...

Can someone help me out here. I went to bestbuy and asked questions but got no answers.

They told me that this receiver is just as good as modern stereo receivers...
Maybe I should get a surround system then? I mean damn... 30 year old technology can't be beat I guess.
The receiver has real wood on it too :D

Oh here's a better picture

I personally love the look of the vintage audio equipment... there's a certain kind of class to it, and those Yamaha speakers look really nice.
For that bass you want, a powered subwoofer might get you there... assuming it can be hooked up to your receiver.

Or his soundcard, since he's not using surround sound...assuming it has a sub output? hmm..but then he'd have to turn on surround sound to get the sub to work..well, was worth a shot...oh well

the pics are a bit small but i think i see that the amp has an output for a second set of speakers. so you could easily hook up a powerrd subwoofer to them.(if the sub has the right inputs)
lot's of old amps are well engineered and stand up well against modern products.
i'd say go with a sub (120watt+) and you find the bass you wan't...no need to go sourround.

IDK if that would work, but he could just get the Dayton 10 or 12 and hook it up to it's high-level inputs, and get the sound he is looking for.

I'm gonna try running the sub from my 5.1 creative SMS surround speakers.... Maybe that will work alright.

edit:
nevermind, the sub on this thing is terrible

the amp does not care what the speaker is. the resistance dictates the current load. if the amp is rated X amount of output at 4ohm and the speaker is rated at 8ohm then the amp will only supply half the current. you just need top be careful when running an amp one very low resistance speakers because it can overheat and/or begin clipping.

i used bookshelve on my z680's and the top end opened up a lot but they are crossed over befor the amp at 120 or 130ish.

I'll take some better pics once I get my Nikon back from a friend I loaned it to and once I get the last couple things in the mail for my system. Still looking for a matching center, the B&W is still sitting there but isn't active.

Nic,

Those are really nice speakers you got there. I have had experience with Infinity and their CMMD drivers. Have not heard this particular model though, but I did drool over them once before.

Better pics are always welcomed.... nice stuff!

They were free :D

KRK V4's... My father put velcro strips on the side, used them for a few weeks, decided he wanted something else and when he went to take the strips off, it ripped part of the surface off. Meaning he had no chance of returning them... So I got them :)

Boredom + selling my unused center/sub/rears == new pics and rewire job.

Speakers are Athena B2 run off a (needs to be upgraded) Kenwood VR-506 receiver.

Do those MS-1s, I presume, get enough power from that Kenwood. My Onkyo headphone out sounds like shit, I don't even think it is amped. My Pioneer from about 1993 has a little more umph than the Onkyo headphone out,

SWEET
zuners...gotta love 2.2 firmware

eh i like deeper cherry colored veneer better

thats IMO, but your speakers prolly sound better than mine ;)

Which Axioms, if you don't mind me asking? I was impressed by a friend's DM601 and was considering a set of DM685 (the 602 replacements), but I'll be trying out a few brands first and I'd be curious to try out those as well.

It's not bad but they do improve with a good amp. I've used them with an M^3 and a millet. I preferred the millet because it rounded out the sometimes harsh highs better as well as bringing in the bass slam.

I've had both the DM601 and the DM602 and they are fantastic speakers, but you need good source components. Garbage in, garbage out.

M22s I think. Their bigger bookshelf. They're both good speakers but I was definitely more impressed with the Axioms. I like my av123 X-LS as much or more than my 601s/602s as well.

Nic,

I owned the Axiom M22. How did you come to the conclusion that the M22 was better? Did you have your BWs and the M22 side by side?

Yeah. I hauled my 602s and my X-LS over to my friend's house and we compared all three one after another. We didn't do any A/B testing, just swapping every 10 minutes or so. He thought the 602 and M22 were about equally pleasing and the X-LS trailed slightly, I thought the M22 had the edge over the 602 and the 602 had the edge on the X-LS. It was a while ago so I don't remember that much about the different characteristics. I remember thinking the M22 had a fuller midrange sound (or maybe it was because the 602 had a more pronounced high end that made its midrange seem weaker).

Well, I am probably going to get the Little Dot MKII++
