Got my Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37" 1080p display today!

Today when I set the backlight level from 5 to 1, I have no problems.
Yep, that really does depend on eye sensitivity. I can't stand having my backlight any lower than 4, while for others that's way too high.

Congratulations on your choice of equipment, btw. Great desk, great tablet, and of course great Westy. ;)

Grrr:mad: . Now they just raised the price in PCNation to $1,125. I was gonna order it this weekend, but now it's getting out of my hands. I mean, I'm 17 and it's really expensive as it is. Hmmm. Other alternatives?

It's the best value available IMO unless you want to go with perhaps a 22" or 24" monitor and your still looking at easily $600+ and not nearly the input options. Would you be content if you "settled" for less?? Only you can answer that......Hope you're able to get what you really want....:)

Let's put it this way, I used to read tons of posts in the display forum everyday... now that I have a westinghouse 37" I don't read any posts in here except this one.

The monitor will go into full power down the first time power save occurs, maybe the second time, but unless I power-cycle the monitor, successive power saves only black the screen while the backlights remain on. This has happened on the HDMI and DVI1 connections, haven't tried it on the VGA. The power-save worked perfectly with the P275 IBM "bottle", the only thing different is the 37W3.

Just got mine, but I think I noticed this tonight as well. I was impressed with how well it handled sleep mode the first time, then was wondering why it didn't black out the next time it lost signal. I have an MSI 7800GT, 37w3 firmware is 1.0.

Very curious as to where you purchased your Westy....latest firmware version is 1.8 I believe I have read. Could be a firmware issue obviously though someone more informed on firmware updates will need to chime in on that. I believe I've also read that you can contact Westinghouse and have the unit shipped back and they will flash the unit to the latest and greatest firmware update. The only issue I have with that would be that I wouldn't feel responsible for the shipping fees. Chime in those of you who have some knowledge on these issues please....

Also, would the firmware version be on the box lable??

I am having the same issue with the back light staying on when it losses the signal from my 8800. Drives me nuts makes me wana sell (Not!). But is annoying the only gripe I have with it. I just power it off before i goto bed, but in the land of super lazy I don't want to keep doing it.

P.S. I freaking love this thing and PC Nation kicked ass on my order. Their customer service was top notch.

Yeah, even if I have to work for 1 or 2 more weeks to gather the remaining of the money, I'll do it. If I get something else, like a 24", l just won't be able to be as happy, or maybe consider it a waste of $600. So yeah, I may not have the best paying job in life, but I'll get this baby.:)

uh?

Just got mine from Newegg on Wednesday. Finally set this thing up. It is HUGE had to rearrange everything.

For anyone that wants to request pics, do so now.

I have a Wii (with Zelda) and a PS2. Also have it hooked up to my computer over DVI.

Let me know what you want pictures of and I'll try to do them.

You thought it couldn't get any more ridiculous? You were wrong. Microsoft banning modded consoles from live has left me with no other choice..

I can post some pics of COH but my system is not working as it should since my power supply sucks! Will work on those picks though.

WHERE can I get a desk like the one in the pics posted directly above....very nice looking setup.

Christ, for $100 less you could get an APC RS 1500 UPS and get power conditioning plus almost a half hour of battery backup!

That's exactly what I'm using for my HTPC equipment and another one for my work rig. There's no way I'd trust my gear to powerline fluctuations.

Does anyone have any pics of the wii via component on the westy? I would like to see what it looks like at 480p on the westy. Maybe Zelda/Paper Mario if its not too much to ask. Thanks in advance. :)

If you can... pictures of Twilight Princess and pictures of some movie (DVD) in non-upscaled 480p? Preferrably something that shows the black level of the tv... ...a Star Wars space battle maybe...or... uh... maybe Batman Begins?

Ordered it from Newegg on Sunday...right before they sold out. I've seen posts from other recent egg purchasers that said theirs was 1.8, so I don't know if there's any pattern to it. I've also read that (counter to intuition) 1.0 is the newer (possibly newest) firmware version.

There's no indication of firmware revision on the box or the label.

Go into Menu; the '&' symbol at the bottom, then #7 the System Info and click enter

Before one opens the box....I asked the question thinking that I would reject the shipment if I didn't receive the revision I was expecting.

Mines a revision 1.8...

Will take pictures this weekend for those of you that requested them.

I can do the Wii ones. I don't have most of the games you requested =( not much of a FPS player.

Also don't have a DVD player that will do 480p that I know of.

I do have a PS2 and can try a DVD in that if you want to see.

Same here, which is why I'm going to tip the UPS guy 5 bucks or so to wait while I open it up and test it real quick before I sign for it.

Well, mine arrived intact...mostly. There was a big gash in the center of the box (screen side, naturally) where something had poked through, but the screen was undamaged except for a couple of tiny, nearly invisible scuff marks around the point of impact. They can't be seen at all when it's lit, so while I'm mildly pissed at a box design that puts nothing between the glass and the outer cardboard but a thin foam film and a couple inches of dead air, I'm satisfied with the condition. It helps that there are no dead pixels and that it has the 1.0 firmware.

The UPS guy was very cool. He waited for me to run over from my office which is a couple minutes away, helped me unbox it so I could check for damage, and flagged it as having a damaged box in case I wanted to file a claim later on.

Now it's hooked up to my PC and 360, and it's all good. I have to resist the urge to break into a big stupid grin every time I look at it.

Hey everyone -- Mac user here with some questions, very interested in the 37w3. I sifted through the thread and couldn't find a ton of info, so I hope someone can help:

1. Has anyone used this puppy with Mac OS X, and is it usable as an "everyday" display? (Text, browsing, movies, games, Photoshop, etc.)

2. Will it be comparable to my 17" Apple Studio LCD as a full-time replacement, in terms of contrast ratio and overall picture quality?

3. Will my G4 Sawtooth (1 GHz / 1 GB SDRAM) be able to push the 37w3 at its native 1080p? (Not including 1080p VIDEO, of course!)

3b. Can I pull this off with an ATI 9200 (AGP or PCI), or will I need something superior... or new hardware altogether?

Thanks so much in advance for your help. I sure as heck hope I can join the Westy club. :)

Sorry for the double post, but I also have a more general question:

How does Nintendo Wii look in component 480p? I'll be going from an old 32" 4:3 CRT on S-video. Will picture quality and clarity be improved on the 37w3, black levels aside?

I know Katamai promised some shots of 480p, but if anyone else can do it, please post. Thanks a bunch!

P.S. How's the vertical viewing angle?

:)

jwervel16,

from original post:
"Is this monitor good for general PC use?

This monitor was clearly designed for PC use and gaming due to its high but not insane resolution. Video cards a couple generations old (say, upwards of ATi 9800 and nVidia FX5700) can manage 1920x1080 resolution. That allows you to have two documents side-by-side at 100% zoom. If your eyesight is not the best and/or if you plan to use this for a living room media center, you may want to look at 720p models instead, as they will provide bigger text."

it also recommends going no lower than an X1900 radeon or a 7800 nvidia for gaming on this monitor

P.S. How's the vertical viewing angle?

The same as the horizontal viewing angle...176 degrees. ;)

Seriously, I'm 6'4" and sit with this monitor centered slightly below eye level, and when I walk up and sit down in front of it, I do notice changes in the brightness and color. Things don't really become clear and vibrant until I'm sitting right in front of it. This is my first LCD, so I don't know what's good, bad, or average--that may be par for the course. I guess I would estimate the usable viewing angle at roughly 90 degrees and even less than that if you're very concerned about color.

My order is in and I expect delivery Wednesday. Just in time for my birthday. A big thank you to everyone here. I have been on the fence for months about this display but after finding this thread last week I decided to jump. Now for a question.

I have an Nvidia 6600GT in my older P4 3.0 ghz machine. Will I have any trouble driving this at full 1920x1080 and playing WoW?

Thanks in advance

Joe D

Yeah, refurbished sometimes scares people away, when most of the time there's nothing wrong with it at all.

so newegg has the 42" for $999.99 recertified? what does recertified even mean? anybody?

It means used. It's right up there with *certified preowned* in the auto world.

Don't hear too many folks complain about bad refurbs, but you could get one that was owned by a 3 pack a day chain smoker, too.

I doubt they would sell an something like that but anyway I have never had any problems with refurb equipment. I don't know that I would want the 42" for my computer but to each his own.
