I was wondering if anyone here knows of a good dvd decoder so that I can take full advantage of 5.1 surround sound without spdif without using purevideo. I have I think the gold version? I cant get the 5.1 surround to dial in properly and everytime I start up MCE or a dvd I have to go into the configuration to add the center, rear and sub. It just wants to do stereo by default since I dont have the most expensive version.
I love the audio I get out of AC3filter when I play my xvid movies.... I am able to somehow use that with MCE instead of purevideo? I didnt notice it changed anything on my main computer.
I am trying to get this to work on my HTPC. It is using the onboard audio of my mobo in sig below. I am using Logitech X540 speaker, which by the way if you are looking for them, go to circuit city. They are listed as 99 bucks but online they are 79 and you can make that deal at the register, just tell them they are only 79 online and they will use that price. Thats cheaper than newegg.

This is similar to a question/problem I have. I have purevideo and ac3filter installed. If I run a DVD in MCE, the video fills the screen but my receiver does not get a Dolby Digital audio stream. The I close MCE and play the same DVD in WMP11, I get the Dolby Digital audio but the video does not go the full width. How do I know which video and audio decoders are being used by MCE vs. WMP?

Download a program called graphedit and drag and drop your DVD .vob files into it. It'll tell you which video and audio decoder it's using. I had a similar issue last week when I reinstalled MCE.... I could get sound when I played an xvid file in WMP, but when I tried in MCE, it didn't work. I ran the xvid file into graphedit and noticed it was sending the audio portion through ac3filter AS WELL as Purevideo. There was no need for AC3filter in the equation, so I changed the settings in AC3filter to ignore it, and that fixed the problem. My guess is that it's happening to you guys as well - a filters conflict.

Graphedit is very useful. I will have to look at it again tonite since I didn't see any extra processing on the audio stream for my vob files. The vob file goes thru a Nero splitter, then AC3filter, and out to the final stage. I also ran MS Decoder Check and found that I have Nvidia Purevideo, Ligos, and InterVideo decoders. The Ligos one had red crosses but how do I uninstall it?

Is there a general guide on the web that explains all this #$@&? And is this correct: source file -> splitter -> codec (decoder) -> renderer
