R600XT will be officially known as Radeon HD 2900 XT when it launches in May. It seems that R600XT will be available first followed the XTX. According to DailyTech, the Radeon HD 2900 series features 320 stream processors and supports 128-bit HDR rendering, 24xAA, physics processing. Other features include integrated HDMI output capabilities with 5.1 surround sound. Although the wait for R600 is unbearable but the consoling part is that R600XT stood up well against NVIDIA GeForce 8800 series. Using a Core 2 Extreme QX6700 processor, R600XT scored 12K in 3DMark06, slightly better than a GeForce 8800 GTX. It is benched on the latest 8.361-RC4 drivers, quite an improvement over the older sets of drivers. The core clock of R600XT stood at 750MHz while the memory is at 820MHz. It looks all decent for a US$399 card.

$400, A bit better performance than an 8800, better Vista drivers (most likley), onboard HD 5.1 surround sound, shorter than the 8800. (if these rumors are correct), what's not to love?

nice,
.........and i was just thinking about getting a 8800gts, (wtf was i thinking?),

ati let me down, but ati no longer exists, its amd now,

i'll buy a video card from amd, hope they don't suck as much as ati did

Gotta say I'm skeptical about the 5.1 surround, though.

I mean, it could be cool, but...

...I mean, seriously, Creative is the only game in town when it comes to games. Due to Creative's technology and influence, games are up to EAX5, now, and nobody but Creative offers anything but EAX2 on their cards.

(OTOH, it's long been rumored that Creative is happy to license EAX5 to anyone who will pony up, but all their competitors to date have just been too small operations to do so. Maybe AMD???)

I'm fairly sure the surround and sound part is only for outputting digital audio alongside video. Stuff that you wouldn't likely be doing any processing on. It would just take the audio streams out of a movie and output it to your home theater along with the video. The main reason for doing so is all the copy protection required to play HD-DVD and BluRay.

yeah, and what a waste, this copy protection has been cracked in like 10 different ways already, all that time and money put into implementing a worthless copy protection could be spent better elsewhere,

Hopefully this will driver nvidia prices down and I can pick up a gts for 150. I doubt that low, but I can hope.

Wow very impressive I must say.

I'm glad this card beats the GTX, since AMD's this late in the game it's really going to be good for them.

Plus this is only the XT card! Wow, I cannot wait to see the XTX card! :D

$400 - that's only £200! I paid double that for each of my X1900s (XT and CF). Of course with UK-style pricing it'll likely be closer to £300, but still well within an acceptable margin (and I can always import a couple of them). Do we have confirmation you'll be able to use two 2900XTs in Crossfire from launch?

Mmm, this is tasty. I'd like to see some official benchmarks but very promising. :)

This is the post I saw yesterday that reminded me to log in today. I was looking everywhere for it...:(

Any way, OT..

Um, dderidex, you do understand that dx10 cards will be used primarily with/for Windows Vista, as it will be the only OS in town with dx10 (until them WINE junkies break it down).

And seeing how Vista has changed their entire sound module, because of the problems inherit to EAX, I'm not quite sure that EAX will continue to see heavy support much longer.. I'm also not sure that's going to continue being Creative's 'strong suit', if you know what I mean. Guess they'll have to find another gimmick to keep their position.

finally some good news. i still won't upgrade until we get some dx10 but cool none the less.

8800gts is going to be under 300 for the 640mb version I bet.

12K, kool, surprised no one questioned "Wheres the 3DMark Chart to confirm this?" =P. Unless it didn't load for me from the site or something -.^.

"8800gts is going to be under 300 for the 640mb version I bet."

GOOOD.. I can see upgradeing 1-2 times a year if the cards are only 300 max. But when they start costing $500-600 I really dont even want to think about it :( specially when they come out with a new one in 6 months...

I wonder why they bothered to make a 320GTS when they waste so much GDDR3 on those crappy low end cards.

wow this makes me sick to my stomach. $280 8800gts or 400$ 2900xt. And the 2900 would seriously kill the 8800gts. I'm ordering my system in a fricken week! I'm lost for words.

you don't really think its gonna be $400 to start off with, do you? ;)

creative got a swift kick in the nuts with the release of vista and its software only sounds driver model.

also, this card is expected to have alot higher dx10 performance than dx9 performance

Depending on their initial supply why not? If they can launch with a decent lot I think it is a reality we should expect.

Speaking of which, does anyone know the PSU requirements for this card?

According to rumors it will have 2 connectors, a 6 pin and a 6pin/8pin. 2 6pin pcie will work, but if you want to OC you'll need the 8 pin. Remember 6pin(75W), 8pin(150W), so a PSU with a nice high Amp 12V rail should do the job. Obviously speculation, either way we will find out very soon the power expectations of these cards.

I am 'hoping' that this card will have a similar advantage in DX10 as did the 9700 in DX9. Crossing fingers. Thinking back, man wasn't that 9700 a great benchmark for how to bring out a new gen GPU.

I don't understand why yourself and others refer to AMD being "late" with the R600. Every game out right now I have played on high settings with My X1900 XTX with no problems. C&C 3 throws me a stutter once in a while, but nothing that grinds. Any DX10 titles out?? Nope. Halo 2 is around the corner, and it happens that R600 is out at the same time. Just at the start of game launches for DX10 support. Thats called delivery when needed. 8800 was too early. Thats evident in the Vista Drivers. DAMMIT made the right choice in release time.

Plus, you basically get a built in Physics Processor with it to boot. Yeah, nVidia jumped the gun when ATI was developing deeper. This thing is gonna do some damage in Folding@home.

wow, I thought it was going to be alot faster then the 8800gtx.

this is ONLY the XT version, not an XTX version, this is like NVIDIA GTS but it is beting their top end card., see how nvidia's Ultra does if they release it.

You word it as though Halo2 is going to be DX10...

you forget, the people who know how to crack this stuff, arent the %90 of joe blows who buy computers from dell and HP and gateway / apple, so this copy protection i STILL effective for the larger part of the market.

most of the market isnt interested in cracking it.
