AMD Quad-core chip dubbed "Barcelona"

I don't think that we will be seeing any AM2 4x4 motherboards, atleast.. anytime soon..

Ya real wishful considering the sockets and memory alone would likely take up half the board. The pair of video cards would take up the other half.

Not likely considering you can have quad on one AM2 socket which is already offered on
mATX boards. Now yes I don't disput that you can add alot more to the board like dual
16x PCIe and a host slew of other devine add-in's as well as a/singular secondary AM2
socket. LOL and 16GB RAM as an added bonus.

While it is very possible to uptain quad on a single AM2 it is a given others would want
the rest of the packagte to fallow, like dual AM2 sockets for the 4x4 enthusiasts but,
can be a more simple design at the begining like I'm sure it will by just offering one AM2
socket with 8GB RAM support and your choice of 1 to 2 PCIe 16x slots.

You don't need to have a $1k board to start off with.

The NF-M2 nView is just one good example of a dual core AM2 socket that can be
upgraded to quad without braking the bank. Thats your starter in the mATX class but,
It's still no eight core dual AM2.

Yes Dual AM2 with 16GB and dual 16x PCIe would take up some space but I imagine
not more than your average ATX size with everything crammed together like a mATX or
ITX MoBo.

With the rate technology is going soon we'll have 8Core in our PDA's lol. :D j/k

Actually, kick ass boards start at $200'ish

and go up to $450

That is probably going to be my next board.
16 ram sockets for 2 quad cores, 2 pci-e x8, pci-x

even better in 1U

Hmmm, I thought the only quads that are coming out are for the 1207+ platform which is Socket F. There is a desktop version of it coming out too?

"Barcelona" is the quad-core K8L based Opteron.

The 4x4 quad-core K8L is "AgenaFX", the quad-core K8L AM2 is "Agena", and the dual-core K8L with 2MB L3 is "Kuma", the dual-core K8L with no L3 is "Rana", and the single-core K8L is "Spica", which might be branded as a Sempron.

"Barcelona" - kind of reminds me of Manuel on Faulty Towers - "he's from Barcelona." :p
I'm looking forward to seeing how these systems perform.

Theres no dout in my mind that this will rape Kentsfield...but it doesn't seem practical. 2GBs of ram per cpu? Two CPUs on a board period...I won't be buying the 4x4 but I'll be waiting for native quad-core on as a single cpu solution.

Barcelona will be going against Clovertown and Tigerton, so Kentsfield isn't an issue. They aren't even in the same segement.

And for the moment Kentsfield's competition is 2 Windsor FX's on Socket F, so Kentsfield is going to be doing just fine.

Intel's Kentsfield will be quite old though by the time Agena FX's rolls around in Q3 2007. We will be close to the Yorkfield refresh by that time.

The 4x4 Socket F motherbaords have something like 4x PCI-Express x16 slots, and 4 Ram slots for 2 Ram sticks for each processors. The board is also apparently extended ATX. So the Ram limit remains the same unless your going to full fledged Opteron 2xxx boards.

The rumors suggest that the next gen AMD processor will run on AM2 with a DDR2 interface and on AM3 with possibly a DDR3 interface.

"They"?

Barcelona is Socket F
AgenaFX is 4x4 (which is physically Socket F, but has no registered or EEC RAM requirements, and fewer HT links. I've seen it call Socket L1A somewhere, but take that with some salt)
Agena is Socket AM2+, and is backwards compatible to Socket AM2.
Kuma, and Rana are also Socket AM2+ / AM2.
Spica, I'm not sure about, it probably will be AM2+ / AM2, but there also might be Socket 939 versions.

Um, more than one CPU... uh, they

Yes, "They"? because there are multiple types of CPU model in the new family. I did however answer the question with answers about ALL of the models, as you did not specify which one you were asking about.

Ah, didn't mean to be sarcastic by the way, I assumed Barcelona was only one model ;) thanks for the info

That's funny, I had the same thought except he pronounces it Barthelona, the same way Charo does :)

For those too young to recall:

I am under the impression that most people from Spain would pronounce the name of the city 'Barthelona'.

:D just trying to throw in a little levity. Hope I didn't hijack the thread too badly. BTW I made a mistake - it should be Fawlty Towers :p
