"What's worse than 100,000 units at launch? How about 80,000? The Nikkei Keizai Shimbun morning edition reports today that due to component shortages, Sony will have only 80,000 units ready for the PS3's 11/11 Japanese launch. This cuts back by a fifth the initial launch target of 100,000."

Not looking good for people waiting until the last minute to buy.

I can't wait to hear the Sony spin; "The PS3 is the fastest selling product ever!"*

*Because we only shipped a fraction of what we should have.

Wow... I wonder if the U.S. is still getting the 400,000 units Sony said they'd launch here. Probably, since it wasn't mentioned there, but who knows what can come out, in the news, in the next few days.

I have no intention of getting one at launch, but man this is just going to further the shortages and the frustration. It's kind of funny, and I'm not trying to start anything here, but some people did a lot of complaining about the 360 launch, and their shortage... just wait. Oh, and I don't really mean anybody in particular here.

I don't intend to get a PS3 at launch either due to the lack of games I'm interested in~

It's not like they have a choice, if they can't supply 100,000 units- they can't supply 100,000 units.

You know, considering the origins of the product, the company, and all that - if I was a Japanese citizen, I would feel pretty angry about repeatedly taking a back seat to North America.

Lol at picture!
Perhaps Sony should practice the time-honored tradition of hara-kiri?

Me too.

You know what's funny? They'll probably import from America like they did with the DS lite.

Hahahhaa, too true, silly, arrogant Sony.

Since Japan has only 1/4 of the population of USA I don't think they're going to miss too much...

200,000 units in America... 80,000 in Japan...

Dang, I'd hate to be a sony !!!!!! right about now. I also agree with the earlier posts about Wii doing well in Japan.

...you do realize how crazy it was when the PS2 launched and how many of those were available to them, right?

I could picture things getting ugly. I remember people getting mugged for 360's, we aint seen nothing yet!

This is just FANTASTIC! I hope the US launch numbers get cut by 20-25%. Ebay I LOVE YOU! :D :D :D

This is not good news, and is going to make the fan-boys freak out even more. I wonder if Sony is even going to be able to meet the north american launch numbers. Either way, you Ebay scalpers are going to have a very good holiday. It's a tough time to be a Sony fan-boy, because it's becoming increasingly more difficult to be an apologist for a company that continues to disappoint. Launching just 80,000 consoles in Nihon is not a good sign, and it's just going to make the Revolution launch that much more successful. Since EB and Gamestop still arn't doing any online pre-orders of the PS3, it's very possible that the launch numbers are "more of a target" than anything meaningful.

I wish I could have gotten a few PS3 pre-orders in for eBay myself! Congrats man, this is great news for you :)!

Here is my theory in their infinite wisdon, Sony placed a several thousand ps3 units next to several thousand of their recalled batteries. BOOM chain reaction destroys all of the precious PS3's Sony has desperately tried hard to make.

Stupid theory and pointless, but this news doesnt come as a suprise to me. Sony has never give a darn about their customers and have lost me as customer on more than one occasion.

Anyone wanna take bets on the day they announce that the # of consoles for America has been cut back?

They should repack all of the units used in their gameday or demo events around the world to help increase that number.

Really outta start a pool for betting on the highest price some idiot will pay on eBay to get a launch PS3. I think we might just see this one creep north of $2000 with a few games thrown in.

They could do that, but then they would just get sued later down the line when people realize they recieved prototype units. Sony wouldn't do anything that stupid, as they are in enough trouble as it is.

I'll be camping out Best buy or Wal mart for another PS3. I have one pre ordered, but I want one to sell. ANd if shippment here get cut, I juts can see those Ebay prices sky rocketing :)

So maybe 3,000$ instead of 2k?

Screw you all! lol. I was going to do this in Europe but there's going to be so little demand come March. :(

Hopefully the launch numbers hold steady for NA.
Or I guess not if you're ebaying.

I think it's pretty clear the us is sony's posterboy for sales. Already sending 4x what was hitting japan was the first sign, and cutting the japan launch is the next. I'm pretty sure, if the launch number decreases again, japan will see the bite, rather than the us.

They're definately going after the U.S. first. I doubt the U.S. numbers will be cut... they know the PS3 will dominate the 360 in Japan... and the Wii really isn't direct competition anymore (it still is competition so don't start with me).

Yeah that poor little old lady is still in rehab...so you still got that 360 :D

There was the 360 murder... but I don't think it had anything to do with people not being able to get one...

PS3's Taiwan & HK launches have been announced by Sony, the missing 20k (as you probably can guess) are most likely going to these two locations. Looks like there are more PS3's available worldwide than what people believe. But yeah, dont let me stop you from the sony hate. :p

Launch date: 17th November

Price:

Hong Kong 60G - HKD$3,780 (US$486)
Hong Kong 20G - HKD$3,180 (US$409)

Taiwan 60G - NTD$17,980 (US$542)
Taiwan 20G - NTD$14,980 (US$451)

TW linky

i dont think "as you can probably guess" and "most likely" warrant the conclusion "there are more PS3's available worldwide than what people believe"

Well, people believe japan is getting 80k units, which seems to be the case. Sony hasnt deviated from the 400k for NA, and if the total were 480k as people seem to believe, then that would mean no units even coming to TW & HK. So there has to be more than 480k units worldwide. Its just a case of adding 1+1 together IMO.

WOW...that 20K changes everything

500K is 500K, regardless of how many territories you spread it across.

What are you talking about, nobody said 500k was impressive. Far from it. I'm just stating that there probably are more than this thread is suggesting. You need to chill out man.

You specifically said something that wasn't true in saying "It looks like there are more PS3s out there than people believe".

Don't get pissed at me for calling you out on misinformation. People think there are 500K PS3's for launch and there will be.

No, this thread suggests that 480k units will be available if japan is 20k less, and that NA might suffer a loss as well which is clearly speculation. Which if anything is the misinformation. Nobody is getting pissed over here, if anything I'm pretty happy right now. :)

The OP said nothing of the sort. He specifically mentioned Japan.

I don't see why the spin machine is out in full force. Microsoft didn't even have 500K units at launch.

Bro I'm sure you can add and subtract. If japan is out of 20k units, that would make the worldwide total 480k units. Nobody is spinning this, if anything I'm trying to point out what may have happened and correct the information. Nobody is talking about Microsoft, why you want to bring that up is beyond me.

The fact that there are 20K less in one region doesn't mean they weren't made; it could simply mean they're going elsewhere. Re-allocation of existing units happens ALL THE TIME.

Microsoft was brought up to hopefully give you a reason to be less prone to damage control.
