Battlefield 2 too demanding?

I'm having an issue where when I turn around quickly in game the FPS drops suddently and I feel a lag.

I'm not sure if it's because the video card can't handle the game or because of something else.

I'm running it with a 6600GT 128MB with Medium on all video settings and 1024x768 resolution.

Could it possibly be a network problem? I didn't bother configuring my router for all the ports that the game uses.

How much ram do you have? That could be an issue. But I think if you have atleast 1 gig it should be fine for 1024x768 on medium settings. 2 gigs is usually required for higher resolutions then that and high settings. Do you have the latest drivers installed? Try seeing how it runs at 800x600.

Your graphics card can't handle texture on medium btw. Medium texture needs a graphics card with 256mb of memory. Also make sure you have 1gig of ram or more.

If its real choppy and your almost getting stops and starts then its probably a connection issure. That would be my guess.

i get the samething but only at the start of a new server and once i spin all the way around, i am good to go.

I too run with medium settings using the pc in my sig. I usually only have that initial lag at the very beginning of a round. After that passes (it only lasts a few seconds) I'm good to go.

Well, I kind of sort of take that back. I just remembered that a little while back I had a lag problem throughout the game every now and then. For me the solution was to run anti spyware apps and CCleaner every two or three days to keep my pc as clean as possible. Once I started doing that my general lag problem went away and I was left with only the beginning of a round lag.

I can play everything maxxed out 1440x900 with a 256meg video card. x850xt anyway.

Are you running an AGP card? If so, there was a big thread about this around a year ago. Change your AGP aperture setting to 256, it made a big difference with my old agp X800XL.

My previous setup could not handle any Medium settings what so ever.
XP 2500+ @ 2GHz
1GB RAM
6800OC 128MB

My new setup will run full Medium without a sweat.
AMD64 3400+ @ 2.4GHz
2GB RAM
6800OC 128MB

Going from 1GB of ram to 2GB of ram has helped a huge amount. But going from a XP2500+ to a AMD64 3400+ made a :D difference.

Same here. Widescreen rules in BF2. But, I run with medium settings with the textures and texture filtering on high.

Go and check this page out from Tweakguides. http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_5.html
It shows that the visual improvements from medium to high are not that much.

Also, somewhere in one of the HardOCP articles Brent mentioned about the laggyness of running with a certian setting on high even though the FPS were very high. I have seen that myself, high FPS, but a laggyness to when you move the mouse and the game responding.

Anyways, 1440x900 medium besides textures and texture filtering being on high I get consistently 100fps on my AGP AIW X800XT at 585/1200.

Not really. It does help but even with 1 gig of ram and all medium settings i only dropped in FPS during artillary fire if i was in the area of it hitting and during alot of action where i was. So sure it did help but it isn't completely required! ;)

It helps with loading times.

Most likely a ram issue.

BF2's engine is a hog, it needs lots o ram.

I was playing with 768mb and got what you had, lots of stuttering when I turned around quickly and such sometimes. Then I upped to 1gb and it helped a lot.

Heh my unlocked 9800 pro se handles my bf2 at medium settings at 50+ fps

AMD64 3400+ @ 2.4GHz
2gb Corsair low latency ddr400
2 10000 rpm raptors raid 0
ATI 9800 pro se with 256mb
:p

Well after taking a little bit from all the advice here, here's my result:

First I set textures to 'low' and it did indeed fix my problem. Then I decided to adjust the aperature size from 64MB to 256MB and that allowed me to run everything at HIGH (w/o AA) at 1024x768 but with jerkiness (the amount depending on the map, eg. 'Strike at Karkand' was fairly low while 'Dragon Valley' was fairly high).

So I decided to set my textures and lighting to medium and now it runs perfectly smooth at 1024x768 in the 'Dragon Valley' map.

Also, in case anyone was wondering the other specs of my PC are:
AMD64 3400+
1GB of RAM

I don't lag at all with settings maxxed out.... I get consistent frame rates... Average about 70-80fps at maxxed settings... No AA of course...

One man's lag is another man's smoothness. :D

When I move my mouse one pixel over for that headshot, I want it immediately, not a 10th of second later. I can't stand max settings in that game on my card.

Not true, I play on the same card at 1280x1024 2aa and high AF along with medium textures without a hitch. I turn down dynamic lighting to medium and shadows to low and the game runs great, except for the first few seconds into the map.

If I recall correctly, according to ATI Tray Tools, BF2 sucks up all of my 256MB of onboard RAM and then another 200+ of AGP RAM.

I will run it tonight again and snag a screenshot of it and post it. It's amazing how much RAM this game can use for the video card.

As you can see, BF2 likes video memory.

You're able to play with 2x AA on a 6600GT? That's crazy

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between hardware sound and software sound in the Audio settings of BF2?

How can I tell if my CPU does the audio processing or my on board audio? Are there motherboards which have the audio done by something other than the CPU?

I believe you would use software if you only have sound via the motherboard and use hardware if you have an add on sound card (IE: PCI Card).

Besides having way more awesome sound affects, it does lighten the load on your CPU a bit.

Read this about that, BF2 is at the bottom of the page, and the next page shows you CPU usage:

Even with 2 Gigs of RAM the game still took a long time to load on my system (specs in sig). You may also want to make sure you do not haves tons of background programs running. And yes I know that last tip is as old as PC gaming itself :p

Sweet program, where did you get it and does it work for nVidia cards?

I turn a few things down, but it's very playable and I think the shadows in that game look like !!!!!!!! anyways. These are my settings until my x1800xt comes in (thursday, thursday :D )

If it werent my flakey board my PC should eat lighting and crap thunder.

:(

Oh well, I got a new mobo. Woot! :)

Another weekend day wasted on !@$ comp building.

BF2 just likes a lot system mem and graphics mem too. It's not too bad. High settings need 256 of graphics mem and system with 2 gb.

with my specs (see sig) i have Everything on Max and res 1600x1200 ( with my raid0 raptors i have never ever been beaten on a new map, i can usually be sitting at enamy spawn with a tank as they spawn in, if i feel evil.)... however that doesnt stop me from finding some ugly shit in that game lol...

look at it this way, i preffer playing ra3 with virtually no textures on, compaired to this with full.. then again i guess thats nothing to do with graphics but prefferance..

Now its time to find a way to prevent the game from adding every server I join into my favorites list.

At least instead of using the horrible in-game interface you can edit the general.con file in your profile directory. Just take out all the lines of "add server history" or something like that.

I doubt that unless you haven't played much. Some servers like to make the initial spawn time a minute or two just so people like you don't get an advantage.

there is a program that you can grab to clear your favorites list and a bunch of other crap from the game. You can also just delete a file under the BF2 folder in my documents and it will clear that list.

I'll see if I can find links for this info

That is ATI Tray Tools. I don't think it works with nVidia cards. It's what we ATI owners have to use for our driver control panel otherwise suffer the Catalyst Control Center.
