Okay, i know the usual checks, but i need to check if this HDD is now dead too :(
i just went through this same exact thing with my WDD HDD and now i'm going through the same exact thing except this time..
my little sister wanted to use my computer, i said sure but be VERY CAREFUL of the extension cord (it's touchy, and if you bump it right it'll shut the computer off) so of course. she bumped it. i turned it back on and about 2-3 minutes later, did it again and i got the BSOD "unmountable boot device" so with it getting shut down hard both times that quick, could it have screwed my HDD? or would it have just screwed with my boot.ini file?
BTW
XP pro
Seagate 300gb SATA drive

I wouldn't chance it with the fixboot and fixmbr commands until you have the data backed up (assuming it's important to you). Do you have a 2nd hard drive laying around?

yep, i have 2 spare 40gigs and i installed one and reinstalled windows on it, found out the whole drive was corrupted, so i after a bit of sobbing formatted it and now it's workingperfectly... lets just say i need to not let my little sister on here anymore.
and i'm back up and running..
thanks for the help!
and i did try to boot up from the windows recovery, but it couldn't find the sata drive even after the drivers.
