Any suggestions for a current LGA 775 board for use with future Core 2 chips?

Hey,

As I explained in another thread in the AMD forum; I've been away in the Mac camp for quite a while so I'm nowhere near as sharp on bleeding edge PC hardware as I used to be.

Seeing the price structure for Intel's CPU lines that is going to go into effect this summer, and seeing the OC potential of the Core 2 really has me eyeing Intel for a change.

I know Core 2 is going to be LGA 775 and is based on the same bus architecture as the Pentium 4, so I'm assuming any current LGA 775 board will support Core 2 fine.

But I was wondering if there's any suggestions for a reasonably priced, well featured, solid and reliable LGA 775 board that wont give me any problems as far as future upgrading.

Good features? Oh yeah. well priced? Maybe not. You need either: intel 975XBX rev. 304 "bad axe" edition. or MSI 975X platinum Rev 2.

The MSI 975X Platinum has no Vcore options in the BIOS so I'm avoiding that board like the plague. The "Bad Axe" rev. 304 looks sweet, but it seems like you can only get them from Fry's right now and I'm an east coast lad so that's out of the question.

If Broadwater doesn't tickle your pickle then you might as well as hold off for "Bearlake" which will sport Intel's upcoming ICH9 SB chip. (Broadwater will feature the ICH8 SB)
 
Well, I'm trying to avoid shelling out for a bleeding edge high-end board. Will pretty much any 775 board on the market support Core 2?

No... only boards on the market now that will support Core 2 (Conroe) are the two that were mentioned in this thread. The intel and the MSI board. The only current chipset that supports Core 2 is the 975x, and only on those 2 boards at the moment.
 
doesn;t the gigabyte turbo thingie mobo has the 975x chipset as well?
 
975 chipsets CAN support Conroe, but the motherboard has to have certain voltage regulators on it to work properly. The early revisions of 975 motherboards don't have them. IE: Gigabyte turbo... etc

Well, if you want a 975X motherboard that can handle Conroe then you will be waiting until June or July for most of the boards to surface. (Abit, Albatron, Foxconn, Asus, DFI, MSI) will all release 975X motherboards that will support Conroe, but they will more then likely come out after the 965 boards do.

Rev B of the MSI does support vcore. That is what coolaler has been using recently.

I'm thinking of Rev 2.0A then. Rev 2.0A didn't have any vCore options corect?
 
Where can one get the MSI 975X? It'd be nice if I could grab a temp CPU to hold me over for the next two months. I'd get a Conroe-supported board with something like a D 805, then when Conroe is available in July (or rather, when it's officially available), I'll just swap the CPU.
 
ZipZoomFly seems to have the best Conroe board selection around, including the MSI.

My 2 cents... but I would avoid the MSI board like the plauge. It's a VERY crappy product. If you want to get a board now I'd go with the Intel D975XBX, though it has limited overclocking options.... it it a GREAT board.
 
Also, if you're looking to pair an 805 with the MSI board, I don't think it supports the 533 FSB (according to MSI website).

Define 'limited'. Pushing a Conroe to 4.6GHz seems to indicate that the board has overclocking options that are more than sufficient. ;)

The MSI 975X which coolaler was using was up to 460FSB with an E6600 (x10=4.6GHz). I think this was at 1.58V, but I have no idea. If it is, he has a lot of room for higher clocks.

TAM used the D975XBX on the X6800 (x12). 394.9FSB = [email protected], or 416.5FSB = [email protected].

Though, honestly, I won't push 4GHz, so either one is fine by me.
