Thanks to tdg for another great interview and OSUGuy98 for all he does for this team!

Enjoy!

tdg: Congratulations on being chosen the [H] DC'er of the month for April, how does it feel to be chosen by your fellow members for such an honor?

OSUguy98: Thanks... it's nice, though I really didn't think I'd win over Moose or Mikeblas.

tdg: Yeah I figured Moose would rig it somehow, but I guess not.

OSUguy98: I think they both deserve it more than I do... with YURT for Mike and all the stuff Moose does to keep us all in line, I figured they'd get it.

tdg: Well I'm sure they'll be chosen eventually, eventually we'll run out of candidates :)

OSUguy98: :)

tdg: Anyhow, why do you think you were chosen?

OSUguy98: My guess would be because of the help I try to give in the forums (at least during my "working" hours)... and the work I've put into my Folding Farm Spreadsheet.

tdg: Ah yeah, the spreadsheet, quite a bit of work involved in that.

OSUguy98: Less now then there used to be... a few people helped me figure out how to get prices automatically... which let me expand it a great deal... I used to put every price into Excel by hand... it's take almost 2 hours to do it... now, it's more like 15 minutes and I'm getting 3 or 4 times the number of prices.

tdg: Automagical stuff speeds it up quite a bit and makes it much easier I bet.

OSUguy98: very much so.... a similar automagical spreadsheet will help out quite a bit this fall with the upcoming [H]ordebowl

tdg: What will the new spreadsheet be for relating to the [H]ordebowl?

OSUguy98: I took the VB knowledge I gained from the folding farm spreadsheet macros, and used it to automatically grab stats from [H]ardfolding...

OSUguy98: I took the spreadsheets that Viper, Moose and p[H]ant0m were using last year, and combined and automated as much as I possibly could...

tdg: Ah, so just putting them all together and automating them?

OSUguy98: Pretty much... basically all they need to do is add in the players this fall, assign the usernames, and put a "Y" in a few boxes and the spreadsheet will do the rest... right down to scoring W-L-T.

tdg: That's cool, should make the progress much easier to keep track of.

OSUguy98: Yup... but I've never seen a spreadsheet that large... with the test data and formulas and all, it was pushing 10MB LOL.

tdg: Wow, must be a lot of programming involved in that, I don't think I've ever seen any spreadsheet that big.

OSUguy98: The vast majority of it was writing a VB script or two... most of that 10MB is due to the formulas... a lot of IF statements...

tdg: Must be, I'm working on a spreadsheet with several hundred formulas, nowhere near 10 MB.

OSUguy98: The scoring page was a lot of it... with 64 players, that's 32 games a week... with a 4 week preseason, 17 week regular season and a 6 or 7 week postseason, it adds up to quite a bit.

tdg: That’s true, I can see how that will add up quickly. Anyway let’s get onto folding. Tell us why you fold.

OSUguy98: There are a number or reasons... some selfish, some not...

OSUguy98: I've lost a number of people in my life to cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s... both grandfathers died of heart failure, mixed in with Alzheimer’s... I never knew one of my grandmothers because she passed away 3 months before I was born, from cancer.

OSUguy98: And currently, the only grandmother I've known is developing Alzheimer's.

tdg: Sorry to hear that, I've had several members diagnosed with cancer, but luckily most were caught before it spread.

OSUguy98: I do like the point’s aspect... it adds a lot of fun to the search for the cure.

tdg: True, for whatever reason people fold it's still for a good cause. I think point’s help a lot of people try to add more machines though, nothing wrong with that.

OSUguy98: But more importantly, I'd like to find a cure for those that won't have to suffer... no one should have to suffer at the hands of any disease.

tdg: Same here, too many people succumb to diseases that can be cured in time with help from projects such as F@H.

OSUguy98: Exactly.

tdg: So what kind of points per day are you currently producing? And how many machines do you currently have folding for you?

OSUguy98: Not nearly enough LOL... I'm getting steamrolled by the Roo I'm against... I'm usually right around 750 or so... depends on the mix of WU’s... I have 4 PCs at home and 1 work PC folding... I think last count was around 11.5 GHz.

tdg: The new WU's they're handing out are killing my ppd.

OSUguy98: I don't complain too much... if it helps, it helps... as long as my PCs have some protein to chew on, I'm happy.

tdg: I went from almost 400 to right around 300, despite adding more machines, and speed.

tdg: Yeah, these new WU's will hopefully make more progress, so in the end everyone wins.

OSUguy98: Yup.

tdg: How long have you been folding for?

OSUguy98: Around 2.5 years... I started around Oct. 2003.

tdg: What initially got you into folding?

OSUguy98: Well, I used to be involved in SETI... One day I saw one of Kyle's or Steve's posts about Folding for the [H]orde... and from then on, I was hooked... joined the forums just to participate in the DC forum and joined the team to help slay the monsters.

tdg: Finding cures > finding ET in my opinion

tdg: I used to run SETI though about 8 years ago.

OSUguy98: Mine too... I ran SETI for about 3 years, wasn't really into it much, it was just on my home PCs (2 at the time)...

tdg: I can foresee F@H being very long-term though, so I'll stick with it for quite a while I'm sure.

OSUguy98: The group of people we have on our team is one of the major reasons I'm still active... I usually try and hide in the shadows of life, but in the DC forum, it's fun to talk and kid around with the other members.

tdg: Same here, part of the reason I switched to [H] was the DC sub forums were much more active and friendly. Too bad I lost all my previous points though.

OSUguy98: You didn't loose them... they all went to a good cause.

tdg: That’s true, good way to think of that.

tdg: Have you referred any new people to folding?

OSUguy98: Not directly, I don't think... thought I've gotten a few people at work interested.... I'm still working on borging the whole state of WV :D I think we bring in more people with our folding badges than anything... I always like seeing them in other sub forums.

tdg: Yeah those are cool, and I think you're right. People see the neat badge and want one.

OSUguy98: I always post mine at the end of every post... at least, when I remember to put it there... Occasionally I forget.

tdg: I usually forget too, it's too bad we can't stick them in the signature.

OSUguy98: Too much room to abuse that... you can't allow it JUST for the folding team, it'd have to be forum wide... and then the [H] would turn into every other forum out there, cluttered with useless sig. images... I like it the way it is.

tdg: Yeah it's clean the way it is, but I'd still rather see folding badges than somebodys computer specs

OSUguy98: Yup.

tdg: I want to know what that computer is doing, not what it could do.

OSUguy98: Very true.

tdg: Well I think that's all I have for you. Anything else you'd like to add?

OSUguy98: Hmmm... nothing I can think of...

tdg: OK, well thanks for your contributions to the team, and for your time speaking with me about it.

I havent been here long but from my short experience I have seen that you contribute a lot to this folding community, congrats for being recognized.

Yay for the spreadsheet lackey! ;)

'grats again OSU.

You deserve it just for putting up with me in the Ir0nNuts Invitional :) Good Job.

FOR THE HORDE

(its blademan88)

You rock :D

This guy answers all my questions, no matter how many I ask. Happy he won! :)

Congrats. It would be so awesome if a whole state folded. I think taxpayers would freak out though - just because they can.

Thanks guys!

not all engineers are evil... just most :D

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

Congrats OSU

I am not evil! But then again I don't have a slip of paper yet saying I am an engineer

Nor do I... I'm taking my PE next spring, at least that's the plan.... Right now, I end up making most of the decisions, without any of the consequences :D but once I get my stamp, I'll have to sign my own plans/etc....
