I just stumbled upon the attractively priced Canon SX50
projector, the only affordable native SXGA+ projector on the market.

http://www.protechprojection.com/inc/pdetail?v=1&pid=4728

The specs are righteous: 1400x1050 native, 1000:1 contrast, 2500lumens. I know the res isn't as impressive as the 3007, but I think i'd prefer 12x10 on an eight foot screen anyway, considering you don't need Quad SLI to push decent frames in Obliv.

Of course, three of these hooked up to a Quad SLI rig through TripleHead2Go would be the ultimate gaming experience  ::drooool::

Next month they'll reveal pricing on an updated model, SX60, and a new 3500 lumen model, SX6. When I do get the money (riiiiight) I won't be buying a 3007.

that sys 3,300 $ the dell 3007 is anywhere from 1,500-2,00 + shipping so... and you said that they are the same price.?huh?

You dont need quad SLI to get decent frames in Oblivian....Theres a a few guys at my local lan center than all have SLId 7900GTs that are pushing pretty decent oblivian frames, very smooth.

oh snap! don't mind me... when i was writing this i was thinking about the 3007 going for 2300, and i made an internal error by saying 3300 to myself. bah... gonna edit for idiocy...

the contrast seems low though

I know they had very nice frames, and thier quality compared to the others playing the center were remarkably better, but your right, Im not sure if they had all settings on Max.

You can't compare projector contrast ratios to LCD mnitor contrast ratio, it no worky. I had the SX50 in a while back. Really nice tight pixel grid delivered probably the most "solid" looking pojector output I've ever seen,if that makes sense. For games it absolutely rocks. However for movies, I wasn't so crazy about it. I was less than amazed by the colour reproduction and black tones had a bluish tinge and lacked real depth. DLP remains the daddy for video playback, I feel.

thanks for confirming my hopes that this would be a kickass gaming display

I have that projector also. It is simply amazing.

A few weeks ago I watched Walk The Line on it and it blew away the Image Quality of my DLP and no rainbows!

it's relatively easy to find 720p projectors out on the market in the consumer-level price range. the SX50 has the distinction of a much higher native res at its disposal. also, the projector you linked to has way less luminosity.

also note that the 7000:1 contrast ratio comes at a cost in brightness. spec says 7000:1 in "vivid" mode, whereas the 1000 lumens are measured in "powerful" mode. so in order to get that level of contrast you probably need to have the room totally dark in order to enjoy it. i prefer not to game in total darkness.

I have an HS51 which is rated at 6000:1 contrast ratio and is what I deem just about right for a good projector experience. Anything below that would SUCK! 1000:1 (while great for bright colorful games such as Oblivion) would be a joke if wanted to play a dark game like Doom or Condenmed as the black levels would be too high and blacks would just crush together without detail.

Also, think about what you will do for a good seat and platform for a keyboard and mouse. A couch would only really be appropriate for a console controller.

i think the lower contrast is due to the LCOS technology. someone correct me if i'm wrong, but my understanding is that LCOS works somewhat like DLP (reflective surface), rather than traditional LCD technology (light filter). Perhaps because of the unselective nature of the LCOS panels' reflection they can't completely stop reflecting the source light and thus for blacks you get deep blues instead.

nice setup!

well, infinium labs is selling a "lapboard;" otherwise a good wireless usb mouse/keyboard, easy chair, and an appropriate desk should do the trick.

Come to think about it Ive never seen any people gaming on a projector...come someone please post pics of them playing on thier projector?

this is an old pic, but i used to play BF42 (and pretty much everything) on my Viewsonic PJ551..

Projector gaming is absolutely amazing for SinglePlayer games..

I played HL2 on it and it was pretty amazing.. (silent hill 3 was great too)..

i've since setup the projector as a theatre only, and now game on the WestingHouse37"

Please tell me it's the camera, cause that looks like ass..

The downsides to projectors are that you have to play and watch in a dungeon (read: dark) or you have horrible blacks. You think LCDs are bad? LOL

And yeah that picture is horrible but I'm sure it looks better in complete darkness.

i think if you don't have a projector setup thats greater than atleast 80", its really not worth the trouble. Alot easier getting a 30" Dell and it will look a lot better to.

For the most part... but sony has come out with a new "black" projector screen that blocks all ambient light so that you have a bright and vivid screen in a room with windows- in the middle of the day.

IT's beautiful and I've seen it demoed here in Atlanta, but it's EXPENSIVE. For a decent sized screen, they are $2k.

The stupidity...

I won't be wanting oranges anymore because now I have apples.

except that three SX50's through triplehead2go push nearly the same number of pixels at 3840x1024 as a 3007, but with 50% more FOV on a 23ft screen. Hell, a single SX50 is an order of magnitude larger than a 3007! 10,000 dollars would buy a whole lot of happiness.

so if you want good fruit, and you can afford the kind that you think tastes better, I don't think its stupid to spend more and buy "apples".

Whatever floats your boat, pal. I still say those two products are in no way comparable. Some people actually prefer to have a huge amount of pixels in a small space.

I personally never play with the light on or if so the light bounce off the wall as i do with m projector.

I personally use a desk on wheels that I place in front of my projector. Yes the colors aren't exact, but who gives a damn ? Even if my brown isn't the same brown as on my 21" viewsonic CRT graphic series (wich is incredible :p) I still have the 75 inch screen and for me it's well worth 1000$CDN compared to the 2,750$CDN dell 3007wfp (that's not including the cost of going in SLI with buying 1-2 another/better card).

I know that you guys like tohave the best of the bestest, but in the real world we don't all have that kind of money and most of us can live with game that are "not as we would like them to be" in every way.

Although I only a 7800GT wich couldn't even run @2560 res anD my projector is in 1024 wich is fair enough for me. (I have very big visual problem) even though I usually ran my game @1600 on my CRT.

Don't watch the spec of a projector as it was true, they almost lie all the time in their test. I had a 2500 lumens ep719 from optoma wich was infact around 1400 lumens and his 2000:1 ratio was only a little better than my epson 76C 400:1 ratio.

just got info on the SX60... has a 2000:1 contrast "home theatre" mode.

Forget about playing in home theater mode, both projector I just mentionned were aweful during playing session in this mode. You have to user User mode, RGB or the Game mode is available and even there it depends on the game.

It looks to me like the photo was taken in low light so the camera tried to compensate by over exposing. That's why it looks washed out.
