Copper thermal paste

You could compare the Features of the copper and arctic silver 5.
Arctic Silver
Thermal Conductance: >200,000W/m2.°C (0.001 inch layer)
Thermal Resistance: <0.007°C-in2/Watt (0.001 inch layer)

Copper
Thermal Conductivity: > 4.5 W/m°C
Thermal Resistance: < 0.205 °C-in^2/W

(I dont understand which is better)

Let me just say this. Artic silver compound uses silver as it's base. Silver is a much better heat conductor than copper!! If you could afford a Cpu cooler made from pure silver it would be superior to a copper cooler. That is why AS-5 is so popular. Silver!

Silver beats the ass off copper, so SILVER FOR THE WIN ftw

makes sense... thx for clearing it up

Re: "what are your thoughts on this?"

I think you should stick with AS5.

Not sure I'd call it the "base". While Arctic Silver doesn't give the exact amout, they do say
AS5 "contains over 88% thermally Conductive filler by weight."

Yes silver is the better thermal conductor, but only slightly so.
- - (all values W/m-K)

Silver = 429
Copper = 401
Aluminum = 237
Iron = 80

As you can see "Silver beats the ass off copper" is somewhat an overstatement. :)

I've been slapping copper grease on my CPUs for years now. Why? Because IMO it performs as good as anything else out there and the fact that I'm a cheap bastard. You can pick up a tub of the stuff from most automotive stores for next to nothing and it will last a lifetime.

But you have to be careful, I tested it with a mutimeter and the stuff conducts like crazy. When I had my socket A rig I had to go very easy with it.

Copper grease from the automotive store. Are you talking about "anti-seize" compound?

ok you can use a lot of different pastes and not see a HUGE difference in temperatures. Dan's data did an article about it where he used all the white pastes, silver pastes, some tooth paste and vegemite. All of them were pretty close (the toothpaste scored the best but cakes really quick). Basically his conclusion was that anything beats not using any at all and as far as differences between them, it's hardly noticeable. If you save a few bucks buying whatever and it works for you then perfect. If you're happy paying more for the silver l33t stuff then that's great too. The article also goes on about reading graphs which some folks around here need to read about haha.

I use ceramique myself. Don't know if different pastes make a significant difference.. but I know that I don't want anything conductive just in case.

Hehe...I'd forgotten about that. Great stuff. :) Here's a link to the article.

If AS-5 is too expensive for you then you ought to forget about computing. It does not matter that copper is close. If it isn't better than. Then it loses. I could give one damn what you use. The question was how did the copper stuff stack up. It loses, enough said. And the fact some guy ran around his place trying everything he could think of for thermal paste just means he needs to get out more.

A little $10.00 thing of AS-5 will do 30+ uses. I bought one a few years ago and still use it. Just store it in the fridge. Its so cheap its stupid to even comment on it being the "expensive" paste.

I actually liked the article about different household items being used. Was funny.

The fact that he did use everything around his house was just furthering his point that as long as you have something in there, you're gonna get better results than not using anything. His other point was that it really doesn't make a GIANT difference between which one you use (be it white paste that comes with some heatsinks or some fancy silver stuff). I use AS5 just because that's what I have convenient access to, if I had convenient access to white paste, I would use that. 1 degree C isn't going to make that much of a difference to me in the long and short of it and I seriously doubt that it'll help my OC at all.
