Router problems...I just don't get it

I've gone through about 5 routers over 3 years at my current residence.

All of them have had the same problem. I lose internet until I reboot the router...this happens anywhere between a couple of days to two weeks between reboots.

Sometimes its jsut wireless and sometimes my main wired computer will lose it too. I am always able to connect to the setup page (the 192.168..thing) from any computer even during the internet outtage.

I guess its has to be something I'm doing b/c its been the same on every router.

Right now I'm using the D-link 4300 gamer router. All I do is set the name of the SSID and a WEP key.

Any ideas?

Are they connected to a high end surge protector?. Elecrontics don't like dirty power. I have no such issues with my 4300.

I have it on a surge, I'll try directly to the wall.

The main computer connected by cat5 doesn't lose internet now...just the wireless....rebooting keeps solving the problem..just happened today again (and again 2 minutes later).

Its not just this router...its every router....thought maybe I had to adjust some settings to that it allows wireless computers to stay connected indefinitely.

The router is about 1.5 feet behind one of my Dell 2001FP monitors with nothing above or below it.

What type of net connection do you have?
Have you tried replacing the modem or tried it somewhere else in your house?
Try moving the router somewhere else, maybe theres some wierd interferance or something.

I'm having some wierd problems with the network at work. Netowrk dropping connectings, internet cutting in and out, overall slow preformance... so I'd also like to see some other things to try as well, cause i've tried everything and nothing seems to be working.

I just bought a motorola surfboard to see if that was the problem. I had an old linksys modem before. I moved it farther away from the monitors and changed hte default channel from 6 to 11. I had to turn off turbo, but its no biggie.

I had the same problem with other routers in various locations of my building....there are several other connections here so maby they are causing interference...hopefulyl changing the channel helps. If that's not it...my building just has to be haunted =/

Then again, I wonder why the last router blew out.....light went crazy and it lost all wireless capability and a few hours later lost regular LAN too.

some things i would give consideration. do you have a bunch of cordless phones in the house? if there are are they 2.4 ghz? if you have a cordless phone that is 2.4 ghz move it further away from the wireless router. try changing channels on all 2.4 ghz phones.
make sure to change you wep keys often. update your firmware on the router and or wireless cards. try pointing the antennas towards each other. always know your signal strength. change your wep at least once a week.

I had the same problem. I found that the problem is that consumer grade routers are junk. I setup a linux firewall, plugged it into the same outlet and all the problems went away.

i am honestly a big fan of linksys. if i heard right of some of my customers dlink tech support is in india. only issue for me is that i can't understand what they are trying to say!
linksys has one of the best made and most informative web sites i've ever been to.

Take a look at this review.

The DGL-4300 is no consumer grade router. I think most routers can only handle around 20-30 Mbps routing, the dlink gaming router can do nearly line rate ~93 Mbps.

I know your not having any routing issues, but maybe a firmware update would help, if one's available. You sure that your net connection isn't going down from time to time?

Actually a lot of dlinks technical support is done in Canada, or at least the Canadian calls are answered here. I got offered a job as a tech at a new site they opened up here. Probably 50 or so staff doing both consumer and corprate tech support.

Its not my net, b/c my main computer usually still works which is a wired connection.

I just updated from firmware 1.0 to 1.3.

I'm not too hopeful b/c this has been happening for 3 years throughout diff routers...haven't tried a linksys yet tho.

This is the first time I change the channel though. My phone is a cordless 5.8 ghz one. Could that still somehow cause problems?

good to know! only reason i said it was of what a customer told me. in that case i should try a dlink next time. maybe depends on how well the layout of their web site is. thanks for the info.

no it wouldn't. if it was 2.4 it could. also 2.4 has a good range so could be the next door neighbors
