I have started to learn about the windows feature remote desktop connection. In which you can access your pc through another computer not in lan via ip address. I drive to college and use the computers at school when im there and to do some work when I cant access my home computer. One day this guy was on the computer next to me in class accessing his music files and stuff from his home computer. I was like how to you access your home computer from here he said to use remote desktop connection. He told me how to do it so I tried. I got my ip from my home computer and went to shcool. And made sure that my computer allowed remote desktop connection in the network connections properties. I typed in my ip just like he told me but it didnt work. Then my teacher said I had to configure my dsl router to accept the connection or something. He said I had to get some type of software or tech support. I called sbc and they dont know shit. So I thought to make this post because most of the people on this forum are smarter then the people who run these services. Or if anyone know a good site to go to that would help to.

should be in networking forum, but it'll get moved eventually.

Is the home computer of a LAN? I will assume so.
You need to configure the router to forward ports (whatever it uses) to that computer. The comp at school is trying to access the router, and the router isn't what you want to be accessing.

I believe the port you want is 3389. I'm at work, I'll check later on tonight if you haven't googled it and found out.

edit: Also, be warned that remote desktop is not a secure connection, and there also exists the possibility of the lab machine you're on having a key logger on it. I don't know if it's just me being paranoid, but I always check my lab computers for key loggers, just in case. (Better safe than sorry, in my opinion.)

I only have one computer at home. I have never done this before. I guess you could call me a networking noob. Anyone know of a good place to find like directions or something. Gees im stupid...

You mentioned a dsl router in your intial post. Your manual will show you how to forward ports. Each router maker/model will have slightly variant methods of doing this so there isn't a cure all walkthrough. Just follow your manual's instructions, or perhaps you could post your router model and someone with that brand/model might offer some advice

Sadly I dont know what happened to my router manual. Buy the model is a speedstream 5360.

the 5360 isn't a router.. its just a "modem"

note the ip of the computer your trying to connect to. Then port forward 3389 in your router to the ip. Hopefully your ip doesn't change too often.

chances are that since it is sbc it's dynamic ip and if he doesn't have keep connection alive it's not gonna work cuz his ip will have changed.. there are dns programs you get for this though. so no matter what your ip is it will still work

Also keep in mind that if your XP password is blank or if your computer starts up and goes right to the desktop, Remote Desktop will not work. You'll need to go to User Accounts in the control panel and set a password. Good luck.

Im an idiot I have been talking about a router I only have a dsl modem. Can I still use the romote desktop feature.

Yep. You just don't need to forward any ports. You might have to set some ports up if you are running a personal firewall. I would at least suggest using SSH if you don't have a router.

Well the main reason I cant do it is because im using xp home not pro. I guess that solves that problem but thanks for the info guys I will know how to do it in the future.

XP Home has Remote Desktop...

"The Remote Desktop Connection software is pre-installed with Windows XP. To run it, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection. This software package can also be found on the Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition product CDs and can be installed on any supported Windows platform. To install from the CD, insert the disc into the target machine's CD-ROM drive, select Perform Additional Tasks, and then click Install Remote Desktop Connection."

First of all, default windows RDP connection tool can only be used to remotely access computers by using IP Address, if computers are within your own LAN or Network and not outside your LAN. For accessing computers outside your network, you need to use 3rd party tools such as logmeinrescue, gosupportnow, GoToMyPC etc. or can consider deployment of on premise remote support appliance such as RHUB or Bomgar appliances.
