I Just purchased a new heatsink for my 3.0Cghz processor but i was using it with a stock heatsink. Soo I took the heatsink up and the processor was stuck to it. I don't think i broke any of the pins but... How can I remove it from the stock heatsink without damaging it?????

I've used "killroy was here" to dissolve paste off of heatsinks. It is used to remove spraypaint off of walls. Be warned that stuff gives you an instant headache, and will destroy anything plastic. However it doesn't affect metal.

even if theres no room between the core and the heatsink bottom?

Twist the heatsink, just be careful of the pins. You're not going to rip else off.
Thats what I do, works every time :D

There's gonna be enough room for a flat-headed screwdriver - just insert it between your heatsink and the chip PCB (up to the heatspreader) and gently twist the screwdriver until they pop apart.

I've done it countless times. You're nowhere near the pins so you won't bend or break any of them.

nop no room...

My friend told me to heat up the heatsink. soo im triyn to do that with a soildering iron

My dad said i might of overheated my processor when i left the soilder iron on the heatsink... is that possible??

Sure its possible, how about you try it out and see? BTW I love to hear these stories about the P4 getting stuck to the HSF. At first I thoguth I was the only one who this ever happened to but apparently not, hairdryers are your friend. :D

I stick it in the freezer and check up on it an hour later :) usually falls off by itself

the freezer worked wonders for my 2.0 p4 when i moved to my shuttle system with "ICE"
.

the soldering iron idea was a good one too, just make sure you dont do it for tooo long at a time without giving the heat time to disipate away from the cpu

I "unstuck" my 1.7GHz P4 with a leatherman pocket knife lol, I thought I was the first person this happened to also.

Happened to me too.

I'm probably stating the obvious at this point, but...It's all in the technique of removing the hsf. Don't try to pull it straight off. Give it a twist back and forth as you try to pull it off. A little finesse is sometimes needed.

thanks everyone that help.

I couldn't put my new heatsink on Zalman 6500A because the retrainers brackets wont come off, Which really sucks. Soo I put the stock heatsink on with thermal paste and order a new heatsink maybe next week or soo.

Oh yea my computer still works!!
