I wonder do I have to upgrade my x800xtpe when longhorn comes out ?!

It'll be 2006 before longhorn arrives. So I think yes, you'll have upgraded by then. ;)

sadly i think it might be later, they were supposed to be having problems being on track so they removed 1 or 2 of the breakthrough things or w/e. personaly i dont see y they need a 2 year beta, since it turns beta in early 2005

Actually, Longhorn will run on a DX7 card. The Aero shell has different paths for DX7, DX8, and DX9 hardware, with new effects and lower CPU usage at each level.

few things... windows isn't going to be the new doom3/halflife 2 with favoring one card or another, so there won't be any "ATI rocks windows" or "ATI sucks, NVidia kicks it's ass on the desktop"... microsoft is merely implementing a graphics subsystem (that can be turned off meaning you won't HAVE to have a dx9 card) to transfer screen rendering to the gpu instead of the cpu...

as far as the "turning beta" comment, when software enters the beta stage it's because it is at a point in its development life cycle where it can be tested as if it were a complete product, M$ has yet to announce when that will be for longhorn, but 'turning beta' seems like its a given based on how long it's been in development, which is untrue (but i could just be misunderstanding the comment)...

looking at the first picture up close, the only claim that it makes specific to ATI is "ATI is working very closely with microsoft..." about DX10, but you have to remember this is an ATI press release, they fail to mention that there is a consortium of companies working with M$ on WGF 1.0 including NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, and even Apple... go figure

well this brings me to the memory of a microsoft employe taking pics of arriving g5 comps at a ms warehouse lab...people forget that ms makes software for apple (ms office)

and i believe it was in maximum pc that i read it turns into first beta early 2005 :)

Um dude.. that isn't just ATI specific.. the interface is scalable. That's how it looks on most currently DX9 compatible cards..

God. Looks like total ass. Why can't they make an OS for us minimalists? That's entirely too much garbage on the screen.

Puke

I got a blue flyer inside my MSI Neo2 F that said I got a free Windows 64 beta or something like that...has anybody else gotten one of these?

QFT, i wish XP had a minimalist mode or something that only ran the basic services that you need to get around (lol not safemode)

SORT of what I was thinking. I mean, I'm not a "minimalist" - I DO use the XP themes....but that's it. And I disable all the visual effects, anyway. Certainly don't download the WindowBlinds stuff and have all kinds of special effects and utilities running and all that.

That OS interface....looks a lot like crap. I mean, it's really rather kind of hideous.

EDIT: I mean, gods above - looking at that folder image browser (second pic)....I think if my wife saw a folder that looked like that, her head would explode.

(And I still think "WTF 1.0" is a retarded name for an API. DirectX sounded cool. "WTF 1.0" = not cool)

I was thinking about getting it just to check it out but I'm kind of uneasy about it. If I get it on a CD I might try it.

There are reviews of 64bit XP out. For gaming, it's total ass. Never payed attention to any of the other benchmarks or comparisons. 30% performance decrease from 32bit XP vs. 64bit.

ugh people do NOT think at all before they type, first of all OBVIOUSLY u will be able to run with as little gui effects on as possible

and second have people ever thought that it takes time to teach ur brain to like new things that turn out to be better in the long run??

everyone was LAUGHING at the xbox controller but when u get it in ur hands u realize just how comfortable it is etc, same when u change mice, its uncomfortable at first but after a few days u can never go back cause u realize how much better it is

longhorn is a while away so no use in saying u wont like it based on early pics and take into account my above paragraphs

I said I don't like the pictures shown. I've seen a lot of Longhorn shots, none of them even remotely minimalistic. They're all full of shit, cluttered, and ugly.

You say that we should all think before we type, and say that 'obvously' we'll be able to run with as little GUI as possible. You work for Microsoft? You know these things as facts?

No use in insulting people on a video card forum because we don't like the Longhorn pics that have have been shown.

of course MS is gonna release pics of the most gui intensive parts of the os. that doesnt mean ull be able to turn all the stuff off cause of course u will be able to. for an OS they need to target the lowest possible hardware

Good job editing your first post.

Fact is, you jump at us for judging Longhorn based on what we've seen, while you assume things you have no way of knowing. So, I don't think we're at fault in this situation.

First of all, I'm still laughing at the xbox controller.

Secondly, it can probably be disabled, just like the slideshow, film strip, and image preview options in windows XP.

please explain to me why you people think that the gui will affect your performance?

Everything loaded into the ram will just get paged (into the page file) once a single app demands more ram. Games, encoding, etc....

Its exactly what happens with the services in xp, and this is why many of us in the os forums keep telling people not to turn off any service, at all...

This isn't even really a video card topic. ATi is making a stink about it so what. I had to wonder if I had taken crazy pills when I read "nV better look out" or whatever. I guess we will have to start benching windows exploring sessions. They will have to rethink the 2d/3d mode thing on modern cards since windows will be so graphics heavy. Maybe if I could read the topic I'd have some idea what this thread is all about or the link. The Ati slide has your standard business angle of selling more cards.

This isn't ATi specific, hell, Matrox cards can run most of it. It's just "hey, we can use Longhorn too"...

looks like more bloatware to me. just like xp.

just give me a stable 98 thats able to auto detect some obscure drivers on a fresh reformat and thats all you need.

quoted for truth.

One thing- it may not be ati specific, but who's to say ati's chips won't run it better since they're working together with microsoft?

Sorry for ignorance, but is longhorn going to be 64 bit? I know there is a beta out now, but will the mainstream windows be 64 bit in the next couple of years?

Because ATi is just one of about 400 different companies working with Microsoft on Longhorn... they took a "poetic license" in a sense in saying that "yeah we're workint working with them, sure... but we're not gonna mention everyone else."

Its a 32 bit OS maybe they'll release a 64 bit version a few yrs down the road, who knows

As for Longhorn being made for ATI...omg leave it to the ATI !!!!!!s to try and claim an OS to be tailored to a specific video card

And Im going to have to go with ichbingottderliebe on his statement about the OS and the pics. Im mean ask yourself a question. If you spent x number of years and x number of dollars to make an OS 10 times more advanced than anything you've built yet then why on God's green Earth would you show some bland windows 3.x pics?

Yeah...because when I think of a sleek and efficient operating system, I think Windows 98...

Subtext:
Are you fucking insane?

this forum is amazing. The people calling XP/Longhorn bloatware, are probably the SAME people running 98se/2k with 2 AV's on, 3 software firewalls, winamp agents, quick time agents, kazaa agents, 98 spy apps runing in the background etc.

Like others said, why the hell would MS release a simple pic of a dektop with a startbar on it? We've seen that chit since 95. Obviously they will want to show off new "features" that is where the 3D GUI comes in.

As for hogging down system resources, if done right, all of the eye candy will hog down the GPU, which is iddle nowdays when you are not in a game, so its no big deal.

Personally though, too much eye candy is the least of my worries. The built in DMCA crap, is what worries me in Longhorn. We'll see...

Windows 98 was great if you never wanted time to march forward. The absolute proof that 98 was a house of cards and had nowhere to go was the final death throes of the DOS kernel known as Windows ME. Most 98 afficianados still like to pretend that ME either didn't exist, or was somehow not related to 98.

XP really only has one significant problem IMO. Internet Explorer. Thankfully the fine people who created Firefox have resolved that issue.
