Hard Drive Reliability Stats From 1B Drive Hours

With such low defect rates it amazes me how warranty replacements are refurbished/previously broken. I usually order 10 at a time and on occasion have seen batches with 60% failure rate within warranty period. Other times 1-2%. Certain models have poor reliability within a manufactures sku.

Windows 8 Set For 4th Quarter?

Definitely no need to upgrade from 7. Attrition will get enough people into Windows 8. Cheers!

Kindle Fire to Start a Tablet Price War?

An affordable Android based tablet. If it can be rooted like the droid phones and custom firmware installed, removing any Amazon bloatware we could have something that serves most peoples computing needs. Cheers!

server for my dads small business, simply accounting

Does one really need a server for a 5 user accounting office, that wishes to share 100+ Simply files? 10+ users or potential to grow into would be a definite yes. Seriously look at what a plain Win7 Pro/CoreI3/RAID1/USB external HD Backup tower would cost. With AV of choice(server AV can be...

server for my dads small business, simply accounting

I have set up a few clients with these. http://www.qnap.com/USEng/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=182 They take up no space, run cool and quiet, RAID1, USB hardrive backup, gigalan, remote, folder permissions via user/pass-so any OS will work (*note: Server 2008 requires logon from XP Pro, Vista...

    bad wireless range d-link dir-655

Not entirely that simple. Google is your friend here. Basically if you use a second 655 it will have the same ip addy as the first so you need to disable dhcp and set it to a static ip out of the range of the first 655. Lots of articles on the dlink forum. I use ASUS 520GU, flashed with...

How much would you charge for this service?

Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. Directions come with the software. Setup one system, then make an image onto USB HD or DVD and then write image to other 4 units. Licensing will be whack for office and XP, but it works like a charm if no MS audit. Cheers!

Intel Letting Customers Upgrade Underpowered Chips

Is pure genius from Intel if you can get the public to swallow it. We are talking about the sub 400.00 sector here. Get your laptop for 369.00 and upgrade to 10% faster down the road(bigger difference than ram upgrade). Or pay 419.00 now. This is a world of difference to the people these...

Setting up 17 workstations: a quicker way?

We had to deploy 20 workstations in an accounting firm. Setup one unit to perfection and used Norton Ghost to image it. Deployed image to other 19 units. Had to then boot up offline and change computer name then join to network. Microsoft did do an audit down the road, but we had all 20 Office...

Windows 7 - Folder sharing question

The simple truth us your organization is outgrowing peer to peer sharing and needs to look at a dedicated server as an option. Centralized backup, folder permissions, and RAID for redundancy. Everyone starts out with simple file sharing, and the cost to go to what you need needs to be looked...
