    Xubuntu is probably your best bet. It uses the Xfce desktop environment. It is light, but highly configurable. I often use Xfce for old laptops and workstations, and they clip along with it. Good luck.

    If you want to bend the OS to your will, I suggest you learn how to program in C using the Linux standard libraries. You will learn a lot about an operating system when you have to learn about memory management and process scheduling.

    A program will only run on both cores if it is programmed to use both. Programs such as PhotoShop and many video encoding software packages are designed to use both cores in order to improve performance. A major bennefit of two processor cores is the system's multitasking performance.

    sorry, I meant since you don't own a 6800 nVidia card, you are in good shape to get a nForce 3. There is a compatability problem with the 6800 cards and the nForce 3 chipset.

    The VIA chipsets normally aren't as good as the nForce chipsets. And since you are using are not using a 6800 series nVidia card, the nForce 3 is probably the better way to go.
