Raid 5 nearly useless for 1.5TB drives?

Man go away for a few days... After some more investigation, it seems like most controllers out there would fail on a URE during rebuild. They would have nothing to fall back on, and the data integrity would be ruined. I think that this effects parity calculations far worse than it effects...

WC 2x Perc 5i raid cards

In 15 minutes (no active cooling) they caused my 7900GS (with a zalman on it) to overheat. So I was going with the not taking any chances approach. It would also look pretty cool.

Raid 5 nearly useless for 1.5TB drives?

It largely looks like this is FUD. Raid products have countermeasures for this built in. This guy is assuming a very stupid controller. Slashdot has a thread going on the same article.

Raid 5 nearly useless for 1.5TB drives?

I do indeed, want to believe the article is dumb. I was just curious what you all were seeing in practice. I am going to have 8 1.5tb drives in a raid 5 (when the ups man comes). I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see a raid rebuild halt on a URE, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see it...

Raid 5 nearly useless for 1.5TB drives?

What I am talking about is that with a 1.5tb drive, and the average rate for a read / write error, during a rebuild of a drive failure you have a 50% chance of a failed rebuild. This is only going to get worse. Namely is this FUD: http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=162

Raid 5 nearly useless for 1.5TB drives?

I recently setup a raid5 running with 3 drives (planning on scaling up to 8). I have been following the discussions on raid5/6 becoming extinct in the next few years. Matter of point until a few months ago, no one had ever raided 1.5tb drives (because they didn't exist). Anyone out there...

WC 2x Perc 5i raid cards

looking at these, thoughts? Aquagate duo viva. http://www.sundialmicro.com/Cooler-Master-VGA-Liquid-Cooling-rlm4ae7e3gp_1734_1056.html I am thinking I might want to watercool the processor / board. leaving air for the 20 hard drives. I am running S-Flex fans. I might just try to aim...

    [H]orde build underway!

I am still shopping for a board for my 8-core build. I'll be watching this one, good luck with the RMA.

Project: Big Bang V1 (warning 56k)

When I get home tonight, the old file server data should all be migrated to the new rig (33MB/sec) and 3.6TB equates to quite a long wait. I currently have a fan pointed right at the raid cards, and thats keeping them cool enough for now. Hopefully this built (20xhd's) will do me until I...

Project: Big Bang V1 (warning 56k)

I'll post some more pics tomorrow. I just got the new 1.5tb drives setup as raid5, running through LVM, and using XFS for the file system. Jumped through a few hoops optimizing it for my purposes. I found out something fairly startling as I started scping from my old file server to the new...

Project: Big Bang V1 (warning 56k)

Those are bad ass. I just ordered them, to give it a shot. The next question, is can I use it in conjunction with another circuit (basically ditch their radiator, reservoir), and buy a higher grade radiator / pump. I might as well cool the CPU. Granted, with all those hard drives, I am not...

Project: Big Bang V1 (warning 56k)

I just got a tube of thermal epoxy, which I could use in conjunction, or just fabricate a mount. How hard is it to "undo" a thermal epoxy job? Any tricks to it, or is it pretty permanent?

WC 2x Perc 5i raid cards

I am trying to build a near silent file server, I have the drive noise under control, but the two raid cards I am using are getting extremely hot. I was wondering if anyone had a clever way in mind to water cool both of these cards. Thanks.

Rumours: Apple No Longer Intel-Inside Only?

All nvidia has said is that they are not making a CPU. Because they would get sued.

Project: Big Bang V1 (warning 56k)

Actually, got a really good question. Anyone have any suggestions for watercooling the raid cards? Waterblock suggestions, etc. (I assume most of the heat is coming from the Intel IOP).
